    The Kentucky Speedway was a track that not many people are clamoring to have come back into NASCAR and onto the NASCAR schedule. The track at one point had over 100,000 NASCAR fans filling the grandstands but since the summer of 2020 it has sat vacant, hosting only minimal track workers and unusable Fords in the infield. Many may ask why this happened, or even how this happened. Today we look at it and ask why the Kentucky Speedway failed.

    Here's my thoughts. I live in Cincinnati. I attended every single Cup race (2020 no one could attend) and most all of the truck & Xfinity series events held at the track. Yes, there were some snoozers. But a lot of times. The racing throughout the pack was pretty spectacular for a mile and a half. It is also in a huge market, Procter& Gamble, fifth third, and many more massive companies or headquarters in or around and northern KY. I would love to see it come back, and I do believe that most fans would like to see it come back too and would support the track. But yes, 2011 was a nightmare. I was there. In traffic for almost 8 hours. It was A LOT better starting in 2012

    • @richardedwards2105
      @richardedwards2105 11 місяців тому +2

      I hate to say it, but the main reason it was better is that people didn’t come back. I also have attended many races there since it’s original opening, I miss it being off the schedule for the fact it’s where I spent the most time w my dad as a teenager and young adult, and my kids really enjoyed going.

    • @ahnalee
      @ahnalee 11 місяців тому +2

      @@richardedwards2105 I don't agree that's the reason it was better. The track worked with the state to improve the roads around the speedway (including a new 8 lane area starting 2 miles either direction around the speedway on I-71) and they also improved on the local roads as well, turning them from 2 lane to 6 lane roads. I do think that people not coming back did occur, but at the same time, that wasn't the main reason that the attendance sucked. Not to mention, around that time with NASCAR, it was in a downswing, so attendance and viewership was down everywhere.

  • @syaieya

    Kentucky Speedway killed a too young Louisville Motorspeedway. That alone would have given it a rough start. The traffic issues, the cookie cutter tracks faltering with the newer cars, and the loss of Indycar were all blows on their own.
    But without the speedway, there is a void for speedway racing in that section of the midwest. Yes you can say they're "close" being a few hundred miles away, but anyone that was coming from the local market isn't going to be able to make those races into a day trip.

    • @kidthorazine
      @kidthorazine 3 місяці тому

      TBH, with the traffic, going to Indy for races from Louisville is just as close as Kentucky Motor Speedway, even later after they fixed a lot of the traffic problems it's still only marginally easier to get to and Indy is still preferable for a lot of people here because it's not in the middle of nowhere and you can go out to eat and whatnot before or after the race.

If they are there to serve loyal local fans, those fans will show up for whatever the biggest race is. Look at Iowa, that wonderful little short track. It gets good attendance for ite ARCA race and got good attendance in the past for Xfinity. There is no reason why Xfinity, Trucks or ARCA can't have a stop in Sparta, Kentucky.

    Went to several Indycar races there,tried to go to a the truck race there and actually did attend the first Busch there. It was a decent venue for an Indycar race. The problem was they held their races during the daylight hours. The way that track is built (like a bowl carved into the ground), it was like sitting in a sauna to watch a race. You could get out of your seat and go up under the canopy behind and feel like you were standing in air conditioning. The truck race....came in (interstate) from the east, massive traffic jam, we were sitting in traffic when the race started and since they had announced via radio that they were going to refund money to anyone that couldn't get in and the race was already started and we were still sitting on the interstate, when we did get to the exit, we just kept on going and got our ticket refunded via mail. That of course was after a drive from Indy and hours sitting in traffic. After that we came in from the north via back roads and didn't have many problems. Due to prior (not Bruton) management (the stench came straight from the top), location and how it was built (aforementioned sauna) it was doomed from the start.

    Kentucky Speedway is basically the NASCAR version of what the Korea International Circuit was to F1. Unlike Kentucky, the Korea International Circuit was located in the middle of nowhere & was 250 miles from Seoul South Korea's capital. The infrastructure around the track was non existent & there were no freeways to get to the track just a simple two lane road. The racing there was also pretty boring & there were numerous issues with the track surface with Sebastian Vettel calling it the worst surface he ever raced on. Unsurprisingly F1 stopped going there after 2013 with all effort for South Korea returning to the F1 calendar in going towards a street race in Seoul (think the track featured in Gran Turismo 4 as a template). This is by far the biggest embarrassment that South Korean sports has had the past 50 years as the country has successfully hosted 2 Olympics (the 1988 Summer Games & the 2018 Winter Games) & the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

    I live in central Ky, and honestly am a bit bummed about it being gone now. I only ever got to go to one Nascar race in my life one time in 2016, Keselowski won off of fuel over Edwards, but I missed the ending because my stepdad at the time wanted to beat the traffic because he was more of a fan of Nascar than I was, which is to say he preferred other tracks, and apparently hated this track.
    I thought it was great, race was fine, got to see a few of my favorite drivers, but had it all spoiled in the end by about 20 minutes.
    And the irony of him beating the traffic just meant waiting in the parking lot for an hour because everyone else apparently had the same idea. So my only Nascar experience in person became super bitter.

    It's kind of a shame, it was the closest track to me. Never got the chance to go...but it was an easy drive down I-71 if I wanted to. The racing was mid overall, though shoutout to that one year where the Busch brothers had a nice battle for the win.
    I thought traffic was bad for the first Pocono race we went to. Probably left a little late, got stuck on I-80 and missed the first 20 of TWO HUNDRED laps. The days when Pocono races were still 500 miles. But yeah, that was more our fault. Lesson learned the 2nd time we went. What happened at Kentucky in 2011 shouldn't have happened. Gotta be ready from an infrastructure standpoint for that.

    The only sad thing about Kentucky not being on the schedule is that tha takes a race away from the Ohio market. Especially the central Ohio/ southern Ohio market having to go 3-5 hours out of their way to see a race. With Kentucky, southern Ohio was 2-3 hours from a race. Even better if you lived in cincinatti.
    Even me in north-central ohio. Yes, Mid-Ohio is 20 mins away but we dont get even a truck date anymore so the closest race is 2 and a half hours out of the way. Yes, it dosent seem far, but it definantly impacts engagement from people in the area when it seems like we are being left behind in favor of areas that have multiple races in a 150 mile radius. I know plenty of people who don't even follow the big three as they no longer apply.

I went to the Cup races in 2015 and 2019 aswell as the Xfinity race in 2016, and while traffic wasn't as bad for me and my family getting in the place, it was a horrendous experience getting out, especially whenever it's nearly 12 in the morning, everyone is tired, and it's also like a 2 hour drive back from where I live. Imagine if all the mid-size intermediate tracks were replaced with triangles. A 1.5mi triangle should drive like a 1mi track unless there's something that I'm missing that's to be said about a slightly gentler curve... In any case, pair it with a 3/4 mile triangle to replace a couple short tracks, and there you go. New formula found. Hell, go hog wild and make a 3mi triangle for the ultimate speed challenge. Just be sure to make the lanes as wide as 'Dega and bring back the 920hp engines from 2014, first!

    I will never understand why they booted IndyCar the second they got their NASCAR date. It was obvious to anyone watching that that track wouldn't be profitable for more than a couple years with just one major weekend. It was different before they added 50,000 plus stands and poured money into it for NASCAR to come. That model worked for one major weekend a year(IndyCar). However, the second they poured the money in and added stands and then cut IndyCar's date, it was going to be a failure.

    Last year Michigan International Speedway was a mess. They only had 2 sections of parking open. It left people, us included stuck in traffic for almost 2 hours. We missed the first 6 laps due to this and that included a 40 minute weather delay. We probably moved around 100 feet in about 1.5 hours. I was so glad it stormed so it gave us extra time to get there. I’ve been going to this race now for years and that was the worst traffic I’ve seen. Then after the race they had all the roads closed even the one we took to get there. So they diverted everyone to drive an extra 2 hours to get back to Detroit. It was crazy. Hopefully this Sunday will be better. I’m defiantly leaving very early.

      Same thing happened the last time we went to the Xfinity race at IRP. We had been going there and managing to get out and on the road quickly from a certain gate. That year the management (or police) decided to close that gate (and maybe others) and funnel people out one gate onto a two lane road. What had taken minutes to get out of suddenly took hours. We never went back and I am certain we are not alone. NASCAR can blame whoever made that decision for whatever attendance drop they may have experienced after that.

Fontana is supposedly being converted to a short track. Nashville has made a comeback even though I think that is part of a plan to get back to the Fairgrounds. To sum up, some tracks built during the race track boom enjoyed short term success only.

    I am one of the very few people that actually feels very bad about Kentucky Speedway losing its one and only Cup race date. I make this claim on the grounds that Kentucky Speedway had fought so hard and for so many years to land a Cup Series race, and in 2011 it finally scored one, and then it lost it after the 2020 season. The boring racing that resulted at Kentucky was more the fault of the atrocious cars, tires, and aero packages being run, not really the track itself. It does make me wonder how the racing would've been with the Gen 4 cars had the Cup Series races at Kentucky when the track first opened in 2000. I would like to see numerous other race tracks across America help themselves to Kentucky Speedway's many amenities (the sections of grandstands, the lighting systems, the scoring towers, etc. etc.) and use those to help their own tracks score NASCAR races in the future.
