This game was contemporary of Super Mario Bros 3 (late NES) and proposed 2.5d levels and simultaneous coop gameplay. I can't even imagine the amount of genius programming it took to breath life into such a legend.

It's hard for me. It's all about timing slightly early enough for Tails to jump. My strategies is to make Tails jump exactly when and where to jump, by jumping slightly before that point. So when u know a bomb gonna appear, jump a half later than normal for Tails to avoid obstacles perfectly. I get super sonic all the time with Tails around, even when I was young! :D
***** I would do it without save states, but lets admit it, the original sonic 2 NEEDED a save feature, the premise of getting the 7 emeralds + retries + completing the +10 zones in just one sit is ridiculous, also the special stages themselves are CHEAP, as they require perfect memory and timing, maybe they are doable in one game run with sonic only, but its pretty much impossible to do it with tails without having to look for help.

Everytime you complete 1 special stage all the rings in the level reset, so you can collect them again. I usually had Super Sonic in chemical plant because I loved the music in the special stage and binge them like a coke addict.
Little tip always make sure tails is behind you never let him one pixel to the side or your screwed also in the last stage when you get to the parts with the crazy rings all over the place areas go crazy with it don't ask any questions just go crazy

If you have someone play cooperatively with you as Tails (via 2nd controller) in single player, you can earn more rings than before (exp. split rings or pyramid rings).
I used to love turning on the debug mode cheat, get to a special stage, pausing and then playing the entire special stage with the B button held down, for slow-motion mode... Not because it made the stage any easier (it doesn't, it slows your ability to input commands meaning there's noticable response lag trying to control) but because it altered the music and made it sound DIFFERENT to if it had just been slowed down! Seriously give it a try.
All you Tails-haters seem to be forgetting one important thing when playing with both Sonic & Tails. Tails doesn't have lives, nor does he die normally, while Sonic does, so he can take the hits while Sonic is safe. Plus, he can auto-attack, so you can find the safe spots to attack. It may not be fast, but it beats dying, and dying during a boss fight, point-blank, SUCKS.
Its the intro that really gets caught in my head if they had that instead of the bleep bloop for archivements in xbox there would be many a crazy person

As an EXPERT SONIC PLAYER, I'm sad to say I've never collected all 7 of them on sonic 2. =[ stage 6 and 7 are waaaay too difficult.
i've done it a few times. the grey one is hard but doable. just have to play to the tails lag.
