Such a great moment in theatre. Madeline had been treated very badly years earlier by Broadway legends & lost her 1st Broadway starring role as a result. That years later she found a play & role that put her back on top is beautiful, that the award was presented by her old friend Lily was the icing on the gravy. Sisters were doin' it for themselves!
To win amongst such actresses was a sign of the incredible talent and ability this wonderful woman had. She was taken from us far too soon by cancer but her light will forever shine.
Madeline was a true comedic and musical genius. Her hilarious roles in Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles were among the best ever! I was fortunate enough to be in the audience of the Tonight Show on 9/22/76 and got to see Johnny Carson interview her. I knew I was watching a pair of entertainment giants! Talk about people at the top of their craft. She was so funny. They don't make them like her anymore.
I miss her. She was a great comic actress. I met her at a taping of Robert Klein's radio show in NYC. She was very nice to me; I was a shy young woman who was a bit starstruck.
The most hilarious double standard which completely defines American “stardom”; Here is your best actress Tony, symbolic of peerless appreciation of your gifts as living legend, aaaaannnnd THAT’S ALL THE TIME YOU GET. Move it over sister.
Wow u look at the amazing actresses and actors who are no longer with us! What a glorious talent they were. It makes me sad that there aren't that many around now xx r.i.p Madeline xx you are truly missed xx
She should have won for "on the 20th century" as well. Her performance on the cast album was enough to get the award. Like Streisand, the recording is timeless and perfect.
I've always been a very huge fan of Madeline Kahn. She was a great and wonderful talent to this world.I love and have seen all of her movies from her first one,"What's Up Doc"(1972),all the way to her final film that she made before she died on Dec 3,1999,"Judy Berlin".She truly deserved this Tony Award for her role in "The Sisters Rosezweig".She didn't just play the role of Georgous Teitelbaum, she was Georgous Teitelbaum.I'm sure the Playwrighter Wendy Wesserstein, who wrote it,was proud of her performance,I know I was. They'll never ever be another one like her.May God rest her precious soul.Excited to see you one day in Heaven.Forever Madeline.
One of the greatest female comics of this generation, or any generation. If Madeline lived in the 30's, she would have given Carole Lombard a run for her money. It's still amazing to think she is no longer with us. And to think that Natasha Richardson has passed on too---(sigh)....The heavens must be the best and funniest place imaginable!
+Kennedy Carlson Madeline was one of those performers that left us too early, but gave all of herself to each role she played. Amazing range as an actress, in comedy, music and drama.
Madeline Was amazing to be an actress But it’s a Shame when she’s gone too soon of ovarian cancer she wants so many Emmys back then she was a hit she did young Frankenstein clue a clips and then she was in a show with Bill Cosby she’ll always be remembered by
wow some big talent in a small pool. makes me think only 3 plays were showing then. sad that natasha and lynn were competing against each other. sadder they are buried in the same cemetery
Am I the only one who made the errie connection that both 1993 Best Actress In A Play Nominees Natasha Richardson, and Lynn Redgrave were both buried in the same cemetery,St.Peter's Cemetery located in Lithgow,New York just one year apart.
I hate when they start playing the winner off. 30 seconds is not long enough to make a speech. With the time they waste with useless banter between presenters and hosts they could find the time for the winners to have their say. It's so shameful how they treat the winners by cutting them off with music.
You let the legends speak for as long as they like..
RIP to Madeline Kahn, Natasha Richardson, AND Lynn Redgrave!
All gone prematurely.
What a shanda to play her off like that when what she was saying was poetry.

You can see how hurt she still was...
@Tash21 The show was On the 20th Century, which turned into a real-life All About eve, & confirmed how vicious Harold Prince really was.
To win amongst such actresses was a sign of the incredible talent and ability this wonderful woman had. She was taken from us far too soon by cancer but her light will forever shine.
Ovarian cancer is relentless, unfortunately.
I miss Madeline Kahn. She was so funny and talented. Also, wasn't she just gorgeous?
So beautiful and talented. Still can't believe she's no longer with us.
They played her off? They PLAYED her OFF? Holy sh*t! Those philistines played her off.
Everyone got played off on all these awards shows. The biggest Oscar winners were drowned out when it was time for a commercial.
Yeah, great decision- "Hmmm, we have a legend win her first Tony, so after she talks for about 15 seconds, let's start the music!"
♡. My hero. A woman who helped me without even knowing she was doing it. God bless her.
Madeleine Kahn una delle piu' grandi commedianti..
I'm crying. I adored her. She was magical and her performance was loads of fun.
Me too...
Don’t cry cuz she gone be happy because she was here
She Always Made Me Smile!
Funny and Beautiful!
RIP Madeline Kahn

Never did, unique.
Gone too DAMN soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The world will NEVER forget you Madeline RIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So beautiful; poised; funny; gifted....she was a gift to us. RIP, Ms. Madeline.
At long last she got her Tony rest in peace Madeline
True genius! Don’t forget “Paper Moon”! 👌👏👌👏👏
Lifelong fan of this marvelous, funny lady. YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN would have been NOTHING without MADELINE KAHN. Gone too soon. RIP
YF is a classic across the board. But Elizabeth's arrival @ the castle does make the ending complete!
What a wonderful artist...much missed.
I miss her. She was a great comic actress.
I met her at a taping of Robert Klein's radio show in NYC. She was very nice to me; I was a shy young woman who was a bit starstruck.
What a group of great actresses in this category! Best lady won, though. I miss Madeline, Lynn and Natasha so much!
Excuse me - you do NOT cut off Madeline Kahn with an orchestra when she is speaking!
It looks like there was a 60 second timer that started when Tomlin announced Kahn's name at 1:09, 'cause the music starts at about 2:09.
thank you!
Are you new at this? And...she actually got everyone in.
She is so missed.

She should have won for 20th century as well. Even though only in it for a few weeks, but the recording alone should have gotten her the tony.
I wish I'd have seen her in "Sisters Rosensweig." The play reads well.
Pulitzer winning author.
Wow u look at the amazing actresses and actors who are no longer with us! What a glorious talent they were. It makes me sad that there aren't that many around now xx r.i.p Madeline xx you are truly missed xx
So freaking talented and so much grace. That fing music came in way too early!!
After Jean Harlow Madeline was the best screen comedy actress EVER.
SO MISS HER
Yeah. Me too. No matter the bad or good times (most of them not so good), she made me laugh. That's golden.
She should have won for "on the 20th century" as well. Her performance on the cast album was enough to get the award. Like Streisand, the recording is timeless and perfect.
Harold Prince tried to get her nomination taken away, and Eve Harrington--I mean judy kaye--nominated instead.
Although nominated, I seem to recall hard feelings and ruffled feathers because she left the run so early. That may have impacted voting.
@@steveb1164 Kaye should have won. Incredible performance
I loved her so she was the best

Wendy told Charlie Rose Madeline was a genius.
I love lily and Madeline she was a great actress
It was great Lily let Madeline know she won a few seconds before she said her name.
I briefly knew the hair designer for TSR. He had absolutely nothig negative to say about Kahn, only positive.
Oh Madeline Khan and Natasha Richardson looked so stunning
An amazing comedy actress.
She was such a gem. I fell in love with her when I was a little kid and she was Lily in Blazing Saddles.
She would pass away six years later at the age of 57 from Ovarian cancer.
ebayerr, that cancer kills a lot of Jewish women, I wish they would find a cure, it is a devastating disease, RIP Madeline, we all miss you.
Three of the four are gone, now and it was only 1993.

Lynn Redgrave too :(
Carole was killed much younger than Madeline.
She'd have given Mae West a run for her money. Just fun. That woman was the best of them. The best always get taken too soon. Don't know why. 😐
So funny...on the Mt Rushmore of great comic actresses!
I'm just starting to discover her talent for myself. I share a birthday with her so that's how I got interested.
+Kennedy Carlson Madeline was one of those performers that left us too early, but gave all of herself to each role she played. Amazing range as an actress, in comedy, music and drama.
AT BLOODY LAST
That woman was a genius of comedic timing.
my favorite clip of all time is Madeline Kahn answering the phone in High Anxiety which ends with "Oh, you animal!"
How dare they play her off. Bahstads.
Bequietclaireese omg. i was just going to say those exact words!!!!
They did it again recently with Midler, whose Dolly was bringing in million$. Being Divine, she just bowled right over them.
I know! That woman was a goddess! Shame on them!
@@unowen-nh9ov It's absolutely disrespectful.
Rude
"She's got bone structure.."
Talent. That is what they are. Not like the crap today
Tina Fey and Julia Louise Dreyfus couldnt hold a candle to this very funny woman.
Comparison is the thief of joy. All three of those women are hilariously funny and we are blessed to have them.
@@Sunshine-zm1fx no. Two are distinctly unfunny.

My dear Natasha💞
Ugh....Lily Tomlin reading the winner, "I'm going to make this moment all about me..."
I didn't take it like that at all, she truly showed how extremely Happy she was for her Dear Friend Madeline

wow some big talent in a small pool. makes me think only 3 plays were showing then. sad that natasha and lynn were competing against each other. sadder they are buried in the same cemetery
3 of the nominees dead. How depressing.
You think THAT'S bad? You should see the 1893 nominees!
Am I the only one who made the errie connection that both 1993 Best Actress In A Play Nominees Natasha Richardson, and Lynn Redgrave were both buried in the same cemetery,St.Peter's Cemetery located in Lithgow,New York just one year apart.
Not eerie, they were family, Lynn was nominated for a play about her Dad.

Just say the name Lily. You ruined the moment and we missed the reaction shot. As for the orchestra...bah, let Ms. Kahn speak you ingrates.
Lily enriched the moment, they were friends.
Her recollection was much better than another reaction shot.
How interesting that Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson were up for the same category.
Lynn, Vanessa was on Broadway recently.
Wow. How fucking rude to blast the exit music after less than a minute. Hollywood fucking sucks.
This was in New York.
isnt lilt tomlin an emotional wreck here.......
+peter sommerville lily
peter sommerville meh
Lily.
No, she's awesome.
Lily Tomlin was always annoying, eh?
OMG to have to listen to Lily Tomlin's endless shit! She was trying to promote herself.
You are unfamiliar with awards shows and the entertainment community.
0:20 I am loving Lillly reprising her Laugh-In character (the one who rambles and clips half of her words)
