  • Dive into the enigmatic world of "Eyes Wide Shut," Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece that blurs the lines between truth and illusion. This video explores the intricate layers of relationships, societal masks, and the profound quest for authenticity amidst a world festooned with deception. Kubrick, known for his meticulous craftsmanship, weaves a narrative that not only challenges our perception of reality but also delves deep into the complexities of human desires and the consequences of living within the confines of illusions. Through the journey of Bill and Alice Harford, we're invited to reflect on the facades we maintain in our lives and the impact of confronting the uncomfortable truths lurking beneath the surface.
"Eyes Wide Shut" serves as a compelling study on the duality of existence, where each character navigates the treacherous waters of societal expectations and their innermost yearnings. Kubrick's genius lies in his ability to present a world that is both familiar and surreal, prompting us to question the nature of our relationships and the truths we choose to ignore. This analysis not only celebrates Kubrick's artistic vision but also encourages a deeper understanding of the themes of truth and illusion that resonate throughout his work. Join us as we unravel the mysteries of "Eyes Wide Shut," and perhaps, in the process, uncover a bit more about the illusions we harbor in our own lives.

I always had a suspicion of after parties, and especially after after-parties. Now I understand why.

That is actually one of the best lecture about "Eyes Wide Shut"
The Eyes, when are Shut looks inside, looks within... where Imagination and Fantasy are.
When Alice and Bill wakes up from this illusion they constructed for their life...they know what's going on "Where the Rainbow end" but is that the truth? is what they experienced an EYE opening for them?... or they have to create ANOTHER reality cause the previous just isn't gonna work now that they aware of his fallacy (wich becomes constructed illusion to not fall in the chaos).
This are really puzzling questions, it goes on the roots of your being a thinking conscious creature and made you doubt about the nature of your own experience.

That's an interesting point when you said "New York" feels an illusion. Yes it feels, OK everybody know EWS was filmed in London... but I learned recently that when you see Tom Cruise wandering up front: That's him walking on a treadmill on a blue screen with actual New York stock footage. When you see a side view of him on a door or something that's London. I rewatched this and those scenes with New York stock footage feel even more "off"

That makes a lot of sense. I did not know this was filmed in London. The whole movie and Christmas everywhere was very "uncanny valley" to me.
I'm glad that other people felt the unease. That was most likely Kubrick intent

I don't think she necessarily wants to 'frack' any Hungarians, I always read Alice as kind of happy to be desired but also sort of annoyed as the man's suave manners gradually become, in the face of her clever awareness/resistance to his schlocky pickup lines, rather clunky, e.g. 'We won't be gone long' (or, c'mon just a sec, upstairs hey whaddya say?') Still, though, she is willing to flirt, but she doesn't want to do it. (And this guy will definitely be at the later party, if he's a friend of the Zieglers. )

@@justinmorrow350 i mean thats kinda what I’m saying here right?
The illusion of the fantasy is sometimes far more intoxicating than the reality.
She is enamored with the fantasy of cheating, not with the reality that would bring.

@@travismeadors yeah for sure; I just meant, not in terms of her having a 'fantasy' that is on some level engaged, but that she seemed to be ironically dubious of Savost and his over-the-top come-ons, viz. Ovid (cheesy), 'the art game' (mercenary, get her a job) and the whole marriage as a means to infidelity rap (sophistry). I think my main point about Alice would be: while Bill is out on the town engaged in this continual 'blue movie' of her and the Naval Officer, smacking his gloves and staring while embarking on a reckless quest, Alice is calling him from the kitchen (while he's with Domino, possibly saving his life in the process), or teaching their daughter math, etc. I think that's kind of a sly point in the film; how Alice fantasizes, but is better equipped to deal with these things, through dreams, revelations to Bill, etc. while Bill is so complacent that he is thrown into the deep end of a dream world reflecting his own libidinous shortcomings because of Alice's revelation (which was kinda mean, for sure, she did throw the hammer down, but weed amirite) and sent careening into a netherworld, though this is obviously necessary or there'd be no movie . Ha. I liked your video and thanks for the reply.

I'm under the impression that Kubrick was fascinated by the novel this movie was based on. It might have been unfilmable but he found a way to get it made. In literature juxibcation is much easier to do. Visually the subtext is always left to interpretation. I personally didn't like the movie (Except for Nicole Kidman in the buff). But I have seen it several times because I worship Stanley. It's much ado about nothing but I think that was exactly what Kubrick was going for.

Of all his work, this is the most challenging. Remember thinking it wasn’t sexy when I left the theatre lol, but thought about scenes vividly years later. I recommend watching videos which give esoteric understandings, like the Christmas lights are often pentagram star shapes and other symbols that have significance.
