Small wonder this guy ended up on the top of the heap. He even got the tempo right during the last third of the work. Temptation is to make a racetrack out of it. I got my ears pinned back one time for having the effrontery to comment about excess speed played by a genuinely competent pianist on this Op.48. Comforting to see the judges gave this artist what he deserved.
It's hard to hate any of Chopin's nocturnes, and on the whole, I thought this rendition was just OK. He spoils the rhythmic tension of the piece with his awkward rubati, and IMHO, the tension is what makes this particular nocturne work. You should listen to Pollini's performance in his recent DG release. Moving stuff.
First, he is very gifted- it's difficult to play. Comments: the middle section should have more balanced religious sound with less 'lead' note. and the real test is the third section, where he and many pianists rush it- it should have the same pace as the opening, maybe a slight urgency, with turbulence beneath. Arthur Rubenstein plays it perfectly and sets the bar for all others, as he does for most Nocturnes.
A little too heavy and sombre for my taste. A rather leaden interpretation. Sounds even metallic sometimes. One can be elegiac and still free-flowing at the same time. This nocturne can be so consuming and emotionally draining on the listener, but I didn't quite get that from Mr. Lim.
Thanks for uploading such a precious video
very very good
