All I know is that I enjoy watching videos of people doing extreme outdoors stuff. Like climbing Everest or K2. They all wear north face. I appreciate that a lot of it is probably sponsored gear, but regardless, they are literally surviving a blizzard on the side of a huge mountain in north face. That’s good enough for me around town.

Same here! I’ve had it for 20 years. Bought it at an outlet mall in Michigan for 100 bucks. Black nylon canvas like outer shell, mid thigh length, premium goose down insulation. I can only wear it on the coldest days and even then, I find I have to unzip it a little as it is too warm for this region. I have no idea why anyone needs a 1200 dollar CG or MK coat for this region except as a “look at me! I’m entitled” status symbol. Cheers for being practical!

It’s still in their catalog and I saw them at Tangers Outlet store last week. I used to work in the same building as Canadian Goose and even during their sample sales I just couldn’t justify the amount of money they were selling those parkas for..
Just copped the north face parka. Was gonna get a medium but after seeing a fit alittle bigger I went with a small. You confirmed the bigger fit as well. Great video!
When I first saw the chiliwack it was 800 in like 2010. I bought a mcmurdo in 2019 and it’s literally the reason I look forward to the winter. I bought it for the functionality, not to style necessarily. But it looks good as well. Canada goose to me also turned into too much of a fashion and status statement i didn’t want to represent.

I've had both 12+ years and I like them both. The North face Mcmurdo is a more useful temperature range and better pockets. The goose is only -20 and below and when you need to stand around a lot as it's so pooffy it's more difficult to do physical work while wearing. I payed 250 for the NF and 475$ for the resolute in 2005.
Ps. I wouldn't spend 1400 plus tax on a jacket for work. Canada goose used to be the working jacket of the north but sold out their arctic heritage for a fickle fashion.
Owner of 5 McMurdo jackets, and there have been slight feature changes over the years but all of them I have found to be EXTREMELY warm. Wearing this coat in 39° F I would sweat to death, I dont even pull these out of the closet unless its 15°F or colder. Would love to try a Canada Goose at somepoint but dont have any expectation that it will perform much differently to justify the high price, more of a luxury item.
Maybe, but one has to wonder why you actually found it necessary to buy so many of the very same coat. Don't get me wrong, I have more than just one winter coat but none of them are the very same winter coat and many are for wearing in different temperatures ranges or at least for different purposes.

Few colors for going out, a jacket in a larger size for layering in the bush. etc. I've purchased 2 identical jackets before due to loving my first one, and now I have one for general and working use and one for going out thats clean.
Same have 2 in different colours with different inner pockets too one has similar inner bottom pockets to the CG for gloves or water bottles, and a pocket goggles or glasses as well as zipped pocket for using storing a Dap or MP3 with headphones hole to route through your headphones. In a green colour for walks and taking dog out over moors. The other 2nd one just has one inner zipped pocket with the square block just a bit higher that can slot iem headphone cables into. In BLK. I have a really old parka from TNF a blue /purple could one that's quilted served me well over the years very hard wearing outer shell this one has a snow or storm flat around the waste nowhere near as warm as the other 2 above but has lasted over a decade of abuse over the Lancashire Pennines.
$1500 is a lot to spend on a jacket. You can get a North Face or Patagonia jacket for around 1/5 of the price and it will be just as durable. Many of the Polo Ralph Lauren down jackets I noticed have around 650 or 700 fill which I assume is pretty standard for down jackets.

I just ordered the North face jacket for my boyfriend. He's usually a medium but I sized down to small since apparently it fits a but large. I'm hoping it fits him perfectly.
Some of the best parkas are made by a small British company called Shackleton. They have some expensive stuff but it’s quality, construction, materials and design are top tier. If you really need some next level cold/weather protection I’d look there. Still, I mostly use a down lawyer with a goretex technical shell. Hard to beat.
I ordered a McMurdo online, tried it on, and returned it today. My true size is Medium, but the medium fit more like a large or XL. Really strange sizing, even when considering layering under it
I think that's common in Parkas honestly. I have a Carhartt Parka, and Columbia Parka, North Face Parka, and I'm 6ft 220lbs and I wear an XL in everything except Parkas I'm a Medium haha. But my other Columbia jacket is an XL. And my regular North face is a L.
At a zero C or 4th plus you don’t need a down jacket, but also almost all jacket will function then. But when it gets 12 minus or colder, then material will shift. A jacket that might worked fine until then can stark being supercold cause the material start to freeze. And you won’t know it until it happens.
Just ordered a brand new mcmurda because I needed an upgrade. The NF parka that i own i have bought back in 2006 and it has been through it all and still going. I just needed a cosmetic upgrade, plus, i lost my fur lining for the hood. So overall, NF all the way
Has any of you guys ever looked at Didrikson? They are a lesser known brand of winter coats from Sweden. I wore mine in Saariselka Finland (160 miles inside the artic circle) and it was awesome. Had it 8 years, wash twice a year and it still looks new.
I bought a nautica coat in 2009 and kept it for 10 years and it was the best quality ever and threw it away 5 years ago and I love it wish still had it❤
I've had a couple northfaces supposedly the warmest ones and none have held up at all in extreme cold and wind , I ordered a pajar and it's the absolute best ,no wind goes thru and neither does the cold
You also need to consider other factors as for the higher price like offering a lifetime warranty and being manufactured in Canada as opposed to TNF being manufactured in countries like China, Bangladesh, Vietnam etc.
in clothing business , first level sales mark up is 7 - 8 times , that means you pay that ( not on sales ) clothes in Big Name store all your money go to their profit ( almost ) , it is why we normally see ( on sales items ) can have 30 - 50 % deep discount . I grabbed a parka from the Eddie Bauer site like around xmas, when there was a sale. The Superior Down Parka was $160 and its close cousin the B9 down parka was $178. Both down from like $350! 😵 I copped the B9 instantly

I'm a short man so the McMurdo Parka was to long but I do have the McMurdo Bomber and its very warm for New York winter. You don't even need layers especially if you'll be moving because you'll sweat.
I own a North Face Gotham #1 since about 15 years. Was looking to update for the new model, the McMurdo, but the quality is now so cheap (no zip for the faux-fur hood, no outside middle chest pocket, interior chest pocket has no hole for headphones, sleeves doesn't have cuffs) that I'll probably go with another brand. It's sad that the North Face went that way with cheaper products.
Arc’teryx Therm parka 2020, not the downgraded 2022 model. -5, windchill -9, just a short sleeve t-shirt underneath and I was walking outside for 1 hour didn’t feel any cold. Anything above -1 I have to pull the zipper a bit down to let heat out.
@C definitely the CG looks more stylish. And Therm you need to size down once or twice. Although I must say, the minimalist style of the Therm, and fact that CG is now very common, does make the Therm get more “looks”
@C Rarely gets below 0 in my city during the day time, this December was the first time since I got it. So minus 5c, I felt good, my hands were freezing with gloves rated 2c. Normally I’ll wear it 0-3c with the zipper only up to chest level. If it’s very windy and raining I might wear it up to 7c but that’s mostly just for the waterproof. TBH, most the time for my city it’s overkill. Only been 5 days in 2 years where I felt it was genuinely needed over my puffer coats. Should be noted that the 2022 model has been revised and is probably not as warm because they’ve made it lighter and released the Therme SV which is more like the older Therme but a bit longer.
Plenty of Canada Goose on ebay many with receipts.. I copped 3 jackets none over £360 and the quality of all materials and fine details are spot on inline with my similar Selfridges bought Woolwich parkas. (Middle aged man sadly addicted to buying clothes )
I prefer Canada Goose, as it smoother on my Gold and Platinum Rolex… No, but seriously. No coat is warm, you put any garment on when you are cold,and the jacket will just insulate the cold. It’s best to put the jacket on when you are warm, as your warmth is what makes the filling warm. You are then insulated from the outside cold. Layers,and a hot meal, is what makes you warm. The jacket just insulates. My German Army Issue ‘Parka’, which was made in 1977 and I bought in 1986, from a Surplus shop is just as warm as any of these, with the correct layering. Think I paid £8.00 for it. Apparently, it’s ‘retro and trendy’ now, too. All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧
Its not often that North Face is considered a bargain. Here's where I have a problem with both jackets and their pricepoint (North Face less so) 600 fill power is about the starting point for warmth insulation. Fill power can exceed 1000. Canadian Goose is 625 Fill power, and 80/20 down/feather distribution. Honestly, this jacket shouldn't cost a fraction of what it is with these specs. The REI Stormhenge Down Hybrid Jacket is on sale for $154.93, waterproof, windproof, 850 fill power goose down with a mix of synthetic insulation. The Parka version is on sale for about $20 more, just a parka fit alternative (and of course different color options). Personally, I wouldn't go with either unless you absolutely need this warmth with additional layers. The best way is a base layer, warmth fleece or synthetic warmth layer, high fill power puffy and rain parka. You essentially create a 2-in-1 with rain/wind protection and warmth, and a waterproof/windproof parka amplifies the warmth of a puffy jacket. One important thing to keep in mind is you should never wear a down puffy jacket in the rain, always cover it with a waterproof shell, and should generally never get it wet even from sweat(which also req. special care for washing). This is the purpose of the base layer and synthetic warmth under layer. I personally have a REI Magma 850 down puffy (and a couple of others from other brands) and about 5 different rain jackets to choose from, but my favorite is probably my North Face Venture 2 in grey. I believe in this combo, it was something around $420 combined. Its a system and it just works. You can always peel off the puffy and compress pack it away or if there's no rain, shed the waterproof parka. I am originally from the upper Midwest (Marquette Michigan) which receives some of the worst winters in the US but I've lived in EU for about 14yrs now. This has been my experience of what is the best setup for extreme cold, but also cold and wet as it is here today in Belgium (~7C/45F but with the wind feeling like 2C/34F and both windy and rainy) which can be absolutely miserable if you have to be out in it.
The fill power doesn't mean anything if they use less of it. You can have 1200 fill power down but only put a sliver of it in the baffles and freeze to death. It's a marketing metric, not a real predictor of warmth.
True about fill power, but that’s not all like u said. For instance a 650 fill power will be warmer with 200oz down/feather than an 850 fill with only 50-100 oz down/feather.
Idk why this popped up on my profile to watch, but it’s a good video. I own around 6 North face jackets and 2 are Mc Murdo style parkas along with a few summit series parkas. They are all good jackets/ parkas and served me well. I layer mine and they keep me cozier than most others. The Canada goose parkas are nice, but I am biased to North face from having them since I’ve been a teenager. Also I see the comments mention Eddie Bauer Parker’s. I used to own a ed tel parka and that was well made also and warm. I sold it over 12 years ago but can attest it was a well made jacket. Canada goose is definitely over priced imo c)pared to north face and other brands that provide the same goal of warmth
@@arshaypatel8898 there is nothing wrong with duck down it is a cheaper alternative to goose down and still provides good insulation, but if you are going to spend more than $1000 on a jacket goose down is the only acceptable fill to use, anything less and you are just paying for the badge.
Get a Eddie Bauer when is on clearance around Jan. Got my dad one last year for $150 keeps him warm and cozy during the snowstorm we had in Vancouver BC in Dec.
Very good, detailed review as always. However, I think you should compare with a TEI4 jacket (Chateau parka, at TEI4, is actually the same price as the Wyndham). My issue with the North Face is that they run very big. Their smallest size is S which is way to big for me. I came to CG (got S and XS depending on the line) and could not be happier. I love snug, slim cut down jackets, and the look, the fit alone worth the extra $1K as there is no substitute, and the "made in Canada" part worth another $500. I am willing to pay extra (as much as I can afford) to get things that are made in the USA, Canada, France, Italy, the UK, Germany or Japan, which are very rare these days.
@@beijingbikinibottom There is no right or wrong answer to this. I bought many jackets, and while they all kept me warm, I was not completely satisfied. The amount I spent on all of them actually exceeded what I pay to a CG jacket, but I ended up loving my GC and have been wearing it most of the time, so I ended up buying another GC. That is what I mean by "no substitute". Value cannot be measured. To me, value is when one can get the most out of the product, and that is what I get from my GC: fits me well, is stylist but not fashionable, and is versatile (I can wear my GC Carson parka over a T-shirt of a suit without looking like a Michelin guy).

Being said, Western brands move their manufacturing to developing countries to reduce costs, meaning I would basically pay just for the logo should the product is priced the same, or close to, what is produced at their home countries. In fact, a consider number of my clothing items are made in the USA and Italy, as I do look for where they are made when making my purchases.
4°C and already a need for parka? Most people wear a wool pullover or light jacket at that temperature scale, I am jogging with T shirt. I have got CG parka for 500 CAD in New Brunswick and it is used for -20 C and lower... always toasty.
When you did the warmth test you moved about this could affect your body temperature. I suggest next you stay put in one place to make the test more accurate.
I had a McMurdo. It’s quite warm, and maybe as warm as the lesser warm Canada Goose parkas, but it’s not built as well. I have had many coats of both brands and there is a difference. Though, the prices on Canada Goose have gotten silly. I had a Canada Goose Heli Arctic which is the same as their Resolute. I gave that away after having it for years and it never leaked one feather. I now have the Expedition and the Snow Mantra. The snow Mantra I’ll admit is overkill for anything but the worst conditions in the world. The Expedition is also extremely warm, but still useable at -20C or even a bit warmer. North Face is definitely warm, and I have also had their Pumori jacket. Very warm, but it’s made light for mountain climbing and the fabric is not extremely durable. My dad wore it cutting wood and a branch easily punched a hole through it, which is why I don’t have it anymore. It would not have happened to a Canada Goose parkas, though probably in their puffer jackets the results would have been the same. My final thought is that Canada Goose parkas are better made, though I also agree that the prices are getting ridiculous.
I'm doing some jacket shopping for weather that could get to -30 or 40 degrees celcius. Tried on quite a few brands. Yeah I was also disappointed with the McMurdo. It doesn't have the ribbed cuffs, and the hood is absolutely huge. There is now way to attach the fur more back. It just blocks your vision too much and just like the jacket, it is too big overall. Just seems a little sloppy. But I will try a size smaller in the future. It did seem to be filled nicely though and was evident it would be very warm. Canada Goose to me did not feel like it would stand up to temperatures as claimed. It felt too thin. $200 difference for the CG with fur? Seems to be all about the brand now. Tried on a Moose Knuckles, and man was I amazed. When I put it on it on it looked so much more incredible, along with how amazing it felt. I was really feeling the heat just from trying on some of their jackets, whereas I didn't really get hot in-store trying on the other brands. It was just ever slightly tight around the shoulder area if you need to move your arms in a more mobile way, but the next size up just didn't look as sharp. The MK just needed a little more functionality. Like a few more pockets, and possibly some zippered vents built in. I don't want to feel like I'm cutting myself short with a top of the line jacket. But that's been a critique for most jackets thus far in some way. Mackage looked good and took things in its own direction while also looking discreet. It just didn't have as much pop as MK, was a little more expensive, but didn't hit as hard imo. I ended up trying on Eddie Bauer at the end while it was on sale. The parka wasn't too long which i liked. Rated as waterproofed (which none of the more expensive jackets were). And had lots of pockets. It did seem to have a cheaper build quality though. But I will see how it goes with it. I can also be more adventurous with this cheaper jacket and not worry about damaging it compared to the top-priced brands. I'm eager to try on Point Zero too. Part of me still wants to pick up the MK that I tried on. Navy blue with black fur. And it didn't look pretentious. Had flash but done right with class that stemmed largely from quality and not gimmicky design. MK might stop using real fur in the future. I'd see it as an investment to buy now as well or at least I'd be able to resell it for a decent price if I choose to. Just my 2 cents to add a little bit for discussion here!
My Northface is 40 years old and going strong. Cost about 200 bucks and delivered great service in dozens of cold weather camping trips. My camping days are over but the NF keeps me toasty when sitting for hours in freezing temps with the usual layering. The Canadian gear is overpriced with out better performance. Style becomes irrelevant when it comes to staying warm and surviving in cold weather.
You need to be comparing the McMurdo to the TEI4 rated and more popular Canada Goose jackets. They use a different fill in the TEI3 compared to the TEI4. The Wyndham is rated TEI3 and clearly not as warm. You were basically comparing North Face’s mid - high range parka to Canada Goose’s low range parka.
great review man absolutely the best on youtube there is not much info on these expensive jackets... i would love to see a review of the mountain hardware absolute zero parka also the mammut photics insulated jacket!! i am completely stuck i dont know which to buy the prices are literally the same but completely different builds on both jackets. anyway i hope you see this and possibly consider this review in the future
I can't justify spending $1500 for a coat. I had a NF down coat for about 8 years now and it's still going strong and only spent $300 for it. Sure there are some wear and tear but most I fixed on my won (stuck zipper on one of the pocket one example). To each their own though....if you can afford the price tag of a CG then by all means. I feel for CG, like most high end products are priced because of the name tag.
I got my zipper stuck on my North Face jacket. When I tried to get it unzipped it ripped a part some of the jacket. I sent it in to The North face headquarters and they repaired it for free. This was after 10 years. of owning the jacket. Customer service was excellent!
@C that's true but how often are you using your GC? You'll use your iphone every day for many different things...calls, text, music, videos, photos, etc.... That $1500 CG will be in the closet during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Again, to each their own and if you have the money for it then cool.
One thing I learned, feels like to me there are two ways you wanna layer up. When your moving around, maybe just use the coat, along with your t-shirt. Since you'll be moving around and generating more warmth. Where how you tested it. Maybe adding a sweater would keep you warmer since your not moving around, if at all. Last thing you wanna do is over layer up and start sweating. All depends on what your doing I guess.
I have 3 North Face jackets and 2 of them are falling apart. The one that was my 2nd purchase is still going strong. I plan to head down to Antarctica and i think it's time to get mother goose. I won't buy that version, I want the expedition cut.
As someone who worked for North Face before, I always got more than 60% off brand new in season North Face items. The same can be said towards Canada Goose. They’re not worth getting it at full price, buy them on clearance or buy previous seasons.
I quite agree with this test. CG definitely look way more stylish. Functionality wise - NF wins easily. CG is too expensive in my opinion (it is a bit of a hype at the moment).
NORTH FACE is the Winner in all aspects . I bought ( mistake/ wasted money) couple more major brands & doesn’t fit perfectly like NF parka & short ( bummer style) NF balanced out the looks for guys below 6 footer . Totally worth it & looks great. True to size & machine wash & tumble dry with 4 tennis balls. Good as brand new. Puffy , nice. 👍🙏✔️😜❤️🇨🇦
Canada Goose used to be absolutely function based: well made in small quantities, down-based warmth for extreme cold environments, fur-based hoods for the microclimate benefits specific to survival duration. They are now urban fashion-based. How do you spot a tourist in Iqaluit? Look for the people wearing Canada Goose clothing.
Canada goose. Paid my for 900 plus. The shoulder has no fill. Send the jacket 2 time both time they said it was filled but nothing change. My jacket is warm as hell at all other parts. Bit by the shoulder is is cold as there is barely any down fill. I would buy north fa e or moose knuckle
I want to love the CG brand, however I bought a North Face and a CG two years ago, I bought the North Face a couple of months before the CG and the NF held up better than the CG as far as everyday wear and tear
I have 7 North Face Jackets, picked them up when they were on sales at 50% off. They are so warm even when we were below -30. I do not think Canada Goose worth over $1000.
I happened to have a North Face and a Canada Goose, both of which are worn out in one way or another. After contacting Canada Goose, I was advised that I could mail to them the Expedition for inspection, either for replacement or for repair. Inspection results came out a few days later, telling me to pay around 50 bucks dry cleaning fee. Following the payment, all the problems with my Canada Goose are being fixed, trimming, stichings, worn out zipper, pipings, waist drawcord, cap drawcord and furs repalcements, and etc. Lifeitime warrenty for CG, amazing! My worn-out North Face, however, stays there, dead, if it is the right word. Therefore, I would recommend Canada Goose, even in terms of its price!

This video just confirmed what I already knew which is that CG is way overpriced and overrated people just buy it to look cool and fit in, for the price of one jacket I can buy three from TNF… absolutely ridiculous 😂
You have to look at the down and fill power as well, there duck’s and goose’s down and also the combination of down/feather such as 90/10 and most in the market are 80/20, and the fill power 550-700 is all you need depends where you live. A thousand dollars for a brand tag, no kidding.

When I first saw the chiliwack it was 800 in like 2010. I bought a mcmurdo in 2019 and it’s literally the reason I look forward to the winter. I bought it for the functionality, not to style necessarily. But it looks good as well. Canada goose to me also turned into too much of a fashion and status statement i didn’t want to represent.

I've had both 12+ years and I like them both. The North face Mcmurdo is a more useful temperature range and better pockets. The goose is only -20 and below and when you need to stand around a lot as it's so pooffy it's more difficult to do physical work while wearing. I payed 250 for the NF and 475$ for the resolute in 2005.
Ps. I wouldn't spend 1400 plus tax on a jacket for work. Canada goose used to be the working jacket of the north but sold out their arctic heritage for a fickle fashion.
Some of canada goose jackets are more about warmth than fashion like their expedition jacket. But overall I agree, fashion sells more than function
Owner of 5 McMurdo jackets, and there have been slight feature changes over the years but all of them I have found to be EXTREMELY warm. Wearing this coat in 39° F I would sweat to death, I dont even pull these out of the closet unless its 15°F or colder. Would love to try a Canada Goose at somepoint but dont have any expectation that it will perform much differently to justify the high price, more of a luxury item.

Maybe, but one has to wonder why you actually found it necessary to buy so many of the very same coat. Don't get me wrong, I have more than just one winter coat but none of them are the very same winter coat and many are for wearing in different temperatures ranges or at least for different purposes.

Few colors for going out, a jacket in a larger size for layering in the bush. etc. I've purchased 2 identical jackets before due to loving my first one, and now I have one for general and working use and one for going out thats clean.
Same have 2 in different colours with different inner pockets too one has similar inner bottom pockets to the CG for gloves or water bottles, and a pocket goggles or glasses as well as zipped pocket for using storing a Dap or MP3 with headphones hole to route through your headphones.
In a green colour for walks and taking dog out over moors.
The other 2nd one just has one inner zipped pocket with the square block just a bit higher that can slot iem headphone cables into.

I have a really old parka from TNF a blue /purple could one that's quilted served me well over the years very hard wearing outer shell this one has a snow or storm flat around the waste nowhere near as warm as the other 2 above but has lasted over a decade of abuse over the Lancashire Pennines.
$1500 is a lot to spend on a jacket. You can get a North Face or Patagonia jacket for around 1/5 of the price and it will be just as durable. Many of the Polo Ralph Lauren down jackets I noticed have around 650 or 700 fill which I assume is pretty standard for down jackets.
You don’t know Canada Goose. Not saying North Face is bad. But there is a huge quality difference.

Some of the best parkas are made by a small British company called Shackleton. They have some expensive stuff but it’s quality, construction, materials and design are top tier. If you really need some next level cold/weather protection I’d look there. Still, I mostly use a down lawyer with a goretex technical shell. Hard to beat.

What’s the North Face infill made of?
I ordered a McMurdo online, tried it on, and returned it today. My true size is Medium, but the medium fit more like a large or XL. Really strange sizing, even when considering layering under it
Yea with north face you have to size down but its annoying because i have the McMurdo in XS and it fits but the hood is to small lol

I think that's common in Parkas honestly. I have a Carhartt Parka, and Columbia Parka, North Face Parka, and I'm 6ft 220lbs and I wear an XL in everything except Parkas I'm a Medium haha. But my other Columbia jacket is an XL. And my regular North face is a L.
it is too warm for both them jackets. do it blow freezing. but your assessment is correct. the northface is warmer. only by a little bit.
At a zero C or 4th plus you don’t need a down jacket, but also almost all jacket will function then. But when it gets 12 minus or colder, then material will shift. A jacket that might worked fine until then can stark being supercold cause the material start to freeze. And you won’t know it until it happens.
Just ordered a brand new mcmurda because I needed an upgrade. The NF parka that i own i have bought back in 2006 and it has been through it all and still going. I just needed a cosmetic upgrade, plus, i lost my fur lining for the hood.

Has any of you guys ever looked at Didrikson? They are a lesser known brand of winter coats from Sweden. I wore mine in Saariselka Finland (160 miles inside the artic circle) and it was awesome. Had it 8 years, wash twice a year and it still looks new.
I bought a nautica coat in 2009 and kept it for 10 years and it was the best quality ever and threw it away 5 years ago and I love it wish still had it❤

I've had a couple northfaces supposedly the warmest ones and none have held up at all in extreme cold and wind , I ordered a pajar and it's the absolute best ,no wind goes thru and neither does the cold
You also need to consider other factors as for the higher price like offering a lifetime warranty and being manufactured in Canada as opposed to TNF being manufactured in countries like China, Bangladesh, Vietnam etc.

in clothing business , first level sales mark up is 7 - 8 times , that means you pay that ( not on sales ) clothes in Big Name store all your money go to their profit ( almost ) , it is why we normally see ( on sales items ) can have 30 - 50 % deep discount . I grabbed a parka from the Eddie Bauer site like around xmas, when there was a sale. The Superior Down Parka was $160 and its close cousin the B9 down parka was $178. Both down from like $350! 😵 I copped the B9 instantly

I'm a short man so the McMurdo Parka was to long but I do have the McMurdo Bomber and its very warm for New York winter. You don't even need layers especially if you'll be moving because you'll sweat.

*correction. You fold the fur back when the wind his high. You fold it forward when it's raining. That way the fur doesn't get too wet.
I would rather pay 200 for wool underwear and the 400 North Face rather than spending 1000+ for the Canada Goose. That will definitely be warmer

Thrift shopping, I grab anything goose down and especially eiderdown. You can always gut the item and stuff pillows and duvets.

I own a North Face Gotham #1 since about 15 years. Was looking to update for the new model, the McMurdo, but the quality is now so cheap (no zip for the faux-fur hood, no outside middle chest pocket, interior chest pocket has no hole for headphones, sleeves doesn't have cuffs) that I'll probably go with another brand. It's sad that the North Face went that way with cheaper products.
Arc’teryx Therm parka 2020, not the downgraded 2022 model. -5, windchill -9, just a short sleeve t-shirt underneath and I was walking outside for 1 hour didn’t feel any cold. Anything above -1 I have to pull the zipper a bit down to let heat out.
@C definitely the CG looks more stylish. And Therm you need to size down once or twice.
Although I must say, the minimalist style of the Therm, and fact that CG is now very common, does make the Therm get more “looks”
@C Rarely gets below 0 in my city during the day time, this December was the first time since I got it. So minus 5c, I felt good, my hands were freezing with gloves rated 2c.
Normally I’ll wear it 0-3c with the zipper only up to chest level. If it’s very windy and raining I might wear it up to 7c but that’s mostly just for the waterproof. TBH, most the time for my city it’s overkill. Only been 5 days in 2 years where I felt it was genuinely needed over my puffer coats.
Should be noted that the 2022 model has been revised and is probably not as warm because they’ve made it lighter and released the Therme SV which is more like the older Therme but a bit longer.

Plenty of Canada Goose on ebay many with receipts.. I copped 3 jackets none over £360 and the quality of all materials and fine details are spot on inline with my similar Selfridges bought Woolwich parkas. (Middle aged man sadly addicted to buying clothes )

No coat is warm, you put any garment on when you are cold,and the jacket will just insulate the cold. It’s best to put the jacket on when you are warm, as your warmth is what makes the filling warm. You are then insulated from the outside cold.
Layers,and a hot meal, is what makes you warm. The jacket just insulates.
My German Army Issue ‘Parka’, which was made in 1977 and I bought in 1986, from a Surplus shop is just as warm as any of these, with the correct layering.
Think I paid £8.00 for it.

I just picked up a McMurdo (new) for $100 on super sale (sure, it was an unpopular orange color, but it's not ugly, just unusual).
Are they both real? It’s currently-35 here in Canada January 4th, 2025. Doubtful both would keep 1 warm.
Its not often that North Face is considered a bargain.
Here's where I have a problem with both jackets and their pricepoint (North Face less so)
600 fill power is about the starting point for warmth insulation. Fill power can exceed 1000.
Canadian Goose is 625 Fill power, and 80/20 down/feather distribution. Honestly, this jacket shouldn't cost a fraction of what it is with these specs.
The REI Stormhenge Down Hybrid Jacket is on sale for $154.93, waterproof, windproof, 850 fill power goose down with a mix of synthetic insulation.
The Parka version is on sale for about $20 more, just a parka fit alternative (and of course different color options).
Personally, I wouldn't go with either unless you absolutely need this warmth with additional layers.
The best way is a base layer, warmth fleece or synthetic warmth layer, high fill power puffy and rain parka. You essentially create a 2-in-1 with rain/wind protection and warmth, and a waterproof/windproof parka amplifies the warmth of a puffy jacket. One important thing to keep in mind is you should never wear a down puffy jacket in the rain, always cover it with a waterproof shell, and should generally never get it wet even from sweat(which also req. special care for washing). This is the purpose of the base layer and synthetic warmth under layer. I personally have a REI Magma 850 down puffy (and a couple of others from other brands) and about 5 different rain jackets to choose from, but my favorite is probably my North Face Venture 2 in grey. I believe in this combo, it was something around $420 combined. Its a system and it just works.
You can always peel off the puffy and compress pack it away or if there's no rain, shed the waterproof parka.
I am originally from the upper Midwest (Marquette Michigan) which receives some of the worst winters in the US but I've lived in EU for about 14yrs now.
This has been my experience of what is the best setup for extreme cold, but also cold and wet as it is here today in Belgium (~7C/45F but with the wind feeling like 2C/34F and both windy and rainy) which can be absolutely miserable if you have to be out in it.
That’s why Canada Goose is considered more of a luxury brand rather than your standard brand most people would use
The fill power doesn't mean anything if they use less of it. You can have 1200 fill power down but only put a sliver of it in the baffles and freeze to death. It's a marketing metric, not a real predictor of warmth.
True about fill power, but that’s not all like u said. For instance a 650 fill power will be warmer with 200oz down/feather than an 850 fill with only 50-100 oz down/feather.
Idk why this popped up on my profile to watch, but it’s a good video. I own around 6 North face jackets and 2 are Mc Murdo style parkas along with a few summit series parkas. They are all good jackets/ parkas and served me well. I layer mine and they keep me cozier than most others. The Canada goose parkas are nice, but I am biased to North face from having them since I’ve been a teenager. Also I see the comments mention Eddie Bauer Parker’s. I used to own a ed tel parka and that was well made also and warm. I sold it over 12 years ago but can attest it was a well made jacket. Canada goose is definitely over priced imo c)pared to north face and other brands that provide the same goal of warmth

@@arshaypatel8898 there is nothing wrong with duck down it is a cheaper alternative to goose down and still provides good insulation, but if you are going to spend more than $1000 on a jacket goose down is the only acceptable fill to use, anything less and you are just paying for the badge.

Get a Eddie Bauer when is on clearance around Jan. Got my dad one last year for $150 keeps him warm and cozy during the snowstorm we had in Vancouver BC in Dec.
Very good, detailed review as always. However, I think you should compare with a TEI4 jacket (Chateau parka, at TEI4, is actually the same price as the Wyndham). My issue with the North Face is that they run very big. Their smallest size is S which is way to big for me. I came to CG (got S and XS depending on the line) and could not be happier. I love snug, slim cut down jackets, and the look, the fit alone worth the extra $1K as there is no substitute, and the "made in Canada" part worth another $500. I am willing to pay extra (as much as I can afford) to get things that are made in the USA, Canada, France, Italy, the UK, Germany or Japan, which are very rare these days.
Fit alone is worth an EXTRA GRAND? Maybe it it’s the only jacket in the world that fits right.

@@beijingbikinibottom There is no right or wrong answer to this. I bought many jackets, and while they all kept me warm, I was not completely satisfied. The amount I spent on all of them actually exceeded what I pay to a CG jacket, but I ended up loving my GC and have been wearing it most of the time, so I ended up buying another GC. That is what I mean by "no substitute". Value cannot be measured. To me, value is when one can get the most out of the product, and that is what I get from my GC: fits me well, is stylist but not fashionable, and is versatile (I can wear my GC Carson parka over a T-shirt of a suit without looking like a Michelin guy).

Being said, Western brands move their manufacturing to developing countries to reduce costs, meaning I would basically pay just for the logo should the product is priced the same, or close to, what is produced at their home countries. In fact, a consider number of my clothing items are made in the USA and Italy, as I do look for where they are made when making my purchases.
4°C and already a need for parka? Most people wear a wool pullover or light jacket at that temperature scale, I am jogging with T shirt. I have got CG parka for 500 CAD in New Brunswick and it is used for -20 C and lower... always toasty.
When you bought a pair of 501 Levi jeans or any other Levi jeans, did you have to size up or down, or did you pick your exact waist size and inseam?
I went TTS but I recommend going up a waist size for the 501. In my experience, it fit a bit too slim for my liking
When you did the warmth test you moved about this could affect your body temperature. I suggest next you stay put in one place to make the test more accurate.

The Canada goose adjust to whatever temperature you’re in so you’re never overheating and it is extremely difficult to ever be cold
I had a McMurdo. It’s quite warm, and maybe as warm as the lesser warm Canada Goose parkas, but it’s not built as well. I have had many coats of both brands and there is a difference. Though, the prices on Canada Goose have gotten silly. I had a Canada Goose Heli Arctic which is the same as their Resolute. I gave that away after having it for years and it never leaked one feather. I now have the Expedition and the Snow Mantra. The snow Mantra I’ll admit is overkill for anything but the worst conditions in the world. The Expedition is also extremely warm, but still useable at -20C or even a bit warmer. North Face is definitely warm, and I have also had their Pumori jacket. Very warm, but it’s made light for mountain climbing and the fabric is not extremely durable. My dad wore it cutting wood and a branch easily punched a hole through it, which is why I don’t have it anymore. It would not have happened to a Canada Goose parkas, though probably in their puffer jackets the results would have been the same. My final thought is that Canada Goose parkas are better made, though I also agree that the prices are getting ridiculous.

I'm doing some jacket shopping for weather that could get to -30 or 40 degrees celcius. Tried on quite a few brands. Yeah I was also disappointed with the McMurdo. It doesn't have the ribbed cuffs, and the hood is absolutely huge. There is now way to attach the fur more back. It just blocks your vision too much and just like the jacket, it is too big overall. Just seems a little sloppy. But I will try a size smaller in the future. It did seem to be filled nicely though and was evident it would be very warm. Canada Goose to me did not feel like it would stand up to temperatures as claimed. It felt too thin. $200 difference for the CG with fur? Seems to be all about the brand now. Tried on a Moose Knuckles, and man was I amazed. When I put it on it on it looked so much more incredible, along with how amazing it felt. I was really feeling the heat just from trying on some of their jackets, whereas I didn't really get hot in-store trying on the other brands. It was just ever slightly tight around the shoulder area if you need to move your arms in a more mobile way, but the next size up just didn't look as sharp. The MK just needed a little more functionality. Like a few more pockets, and possibly some zippered vents built in. I don't want to feel like I'm cutting myself short with a top of the line jacket. But that's been a critique for most jackets thus far in some way. Mackage looked good and took things in its own direction while also looking discreet. It just didn't have as much pop as MK, was a little more expensive, but didn't hit as hard imo. I ended up trying on Eddie Bauer at the end while it was on sale. The parka wasn't too long which i liked. Rated as waterproofed (which none of the more expensive jackets were). And had lots of pockets. It did seem to have a cheaper build quality though. But I will see how it goes with it. I can also be more adventurous with this cheaper jacket and not worry about damaging it compared to the top-priced brands. I'm eager to try on Point Zero too. Part of me still wants to pick up the MK that I tried on. Navy blue with black fur. And it didn't look pretentious. Had flash but done right with class that stemmed largely from quality and not gimmicky design. MK might stop using real fur in the future. I'd see it as an investment to buy now as well or at least I'd be able to resell it for a decent price if I choose to. Just my 2 cents to add a little bit for discussion here!
Canada Goose looks really slick and cool.
My Northface is 40 years old and going strong. Cost about 200 bucks and delivered great service in dozens of cold weather camping trips. My camping days are over but the NF keeps me toasty when sitting for hours in freezing temps with the usual layering. The Canadian gear is overpriced with out better performance. Style becomes irrelevant when it comes to staying warm and surviving in cold weather.

You need to be comparing the McMurdo to the TEI4 rated and more popular Canada Goose jackets. They use a different fill in the TEI3 compared to the TEI4. The Wyndham is rated TEI3 and clearly not as warm. You were basically comparing North Face’s mid - high range parka to Canada Goose’s low range parka.
I own both and North face is definitely warmer.

i wear a $30 costco ski jacket at -22C, 0F with heattech underwear. I don't think $400, $1200 is worth it.
I can't justify spending $1500 for a coat. I had a NF down coat for about 8 years now and it's still going strong and only spent $300 for it. Sure there are some wear and tear but most I fixed on my won (stuck zipper on one of the pocket one example). To each their own though....if you can afford the price tag of a CG then by all means. I feel for CG, like most high end products are priced because of the name tag.
I got my zipper stuck on my North Face jacket. When I tried to get it unzipped it ripped a part some of the jacket. I sent it in to The North face headquarters and they repaired it for free. This was after 10 years. of owning the jacket. Customer service was excellent!
@C that's true but how often are you using your GC? You'll use your iphone every day for many different things...calls, text, music, videos, photos, etc.... That $1500 CG will be in the closet during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Again, to each their own and if you have the money for it then cool.
One thing I learned, feels like to me there are two ways you wanna layer up. When your moving around, maybe just use the coat, along with your t-shirt. Since you'll be moving around and generating more warmth. Where how you tested it. Maybe adding a sweater would keep you warmer since your not moving around, if at all. Last thing you wanna do is over layer up and start sweating. All depends on what your doing I guess.

I have 3 North Face jackets and 2 of them are falling apart. The one that was my 2nd purchase is still going strong. I plan to head down to Antarctica and i think it's time to get mother goose. I won't buy that version, I want the expedition cut.
As someone who worked for North Face before, I always got more than 60% off brand new in season North Face items. The same can be said towards Canada Goose. They’re not worth getting it at full price, buy them on clearance or buy previous seasons.

I quite agree with this test. CG definitely look way more stylish. Functionality wise - NF wins easily. CG is too expensive in my opinion (it is a bit of a hype at the moment).

NORTH FACE is the Winner in all aspects . I bought ( mistake/ wasted money) couple more major brands & doesn’t fit perfectly like NF parka & short ( bummer style) NF balanced out the looks for guys below 6 footer . Canada goose. Paid my for 900 plus. The shoulder has no fill. Send the jacket 2 time both time they said it was filled but nothing change. My jacket is warm as hell at all other parts. Bit by the shoulder is is cold as there is barely any down fill. I would buy north fa e or moose knuckle

The only downside to the north face is the synthetic fur. I've got sensitive skin and synthetic fur makes my skin break out with a slight rash
I want to love the CG brand, however I bought a North Face and a CG two years ago, I bought the North Face a couple of months before the CG and the NF held up better than the CG as far as everyday wear and tear

I have 7 North Face Jackets, picked them up when they were on sales at 50% off. They are so warm even when we were below -30. I do not think Canada Goose worth over $1000.

I happened to have a North Face and a Canada Goose, both of which are worn out in one way or another. After contacting Canada Goose, I was advised that I could mail to them the Expedition for inspection, either for replacement or for repair. Inspection results came out a few days later, telling me to pay around 50 bucks dry cleaning fee. Following the payment, all the problems with my Canada Goose are being fixed, trimming, stichings, worn out zipper, pipings, waist drawcord, cap drawcord and furs repalcements, and etc. Lifeitime warrenty for CG, amazing! My worn-out North Face, however, stays there, dead, if it is the right word. Therefore, I would recommend Canada Goose, even in terms of its price!

This video just confirmed what I already knew which is that CG is way overpriced and overrated people just buy it to look cool and fit in, for the price of one jacket I can buy three from TNF… absolutely ridiculous 😂
You have to look at the down and fill power as well, there duck’s and goose’s down and also the combination of down/feather such as 90/10 and most in the market are 80/20, and the fill power 550-700 is all you need depends where you live. A thousand dollars for a brand tag, no kidding.
I have both brands, and the Canada Goose is warmer, in my opinion.
