I love “pinch” because it’s a song that TOTALLY focuses on making Jami’s drums the LEAD instrument throughout. The other instruments just decorate what awesome stuff he’s doing
I only recently discovered CAN. My reaction was where has this music been all my life? They are now one of my all-time favourites. This was also my entry point to Krautrock - Neu!, Ash-Ra Tempel, Faust, Popol Vuh, etc. Thanks for ranking them!
Lovely, lovely rankings and just reminded me of the heights of this totally unique and radically innovative band, maybe the best ever. I can't describe them as "Jam Band" though ; loose ,slobbering blues/country Grateful Dead types they AIN'T! The Can ideal was what they called "Instant Composition" where spontaneous ideas are played as strong statements. And the editing was as much part of the Can process as the playing, and what a genius Czukay was at that. Great to see "Delay" so high, I could write a book on that masterpiece, maybe the only band of the time influenced by the Velvet Underground, but they transcend even that! Especially with Mooney at his most manic.
Great episode! I've been exploring Can and other Krautrock artists for the last couple of years. How about a ranking of your 10 or 20 favorite albums from that genre? I'd love to hear your thoughts on how your favorite Can albums stack up against Neu!, Kraftwerk, Faust, Amon Duul and others.
Excellent ranking. I've become a huge fan of this band in the last couple of months! So far I have 6 of their albums so far and hoping to get more soon. I am having a live chat today at 3 PM E.D.T. on my channel. Feel free to drop by!
Another connection. Zappa was a significant influence for Krautrock in general. And both can trace influences back to Karl-Heinz Stockhausen. Holger Czukay and Irwin Schmidt of CAN actually studied with Stockhausen. I have discovered that a lot of the music I like has been influenced by him.
Top 5 1. Ege Bamyasi 2 Tago Mago 3 Monster Movie 4 Sountracks 5 Future Days And I really the remix album Sacrilege Would love to see PIL / Jah Wobble reviews
I have nearly all the albums here. For me, "Inner Space" is the clear winner. It sometimes goes by Can by Can. It has a wrench head with the Can logo inside. Very different than their early 2 track stuff, but Safe, Sunday Jam, All Gates Open, most of the rest of it - just excellent. And sure, I like all the early jammy stuff, but that's the one that does it for me.
I just finished their biography All Gates Open. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Top 6 6. Soon Over Babaluma 5. Monster Movie 4. Soundtracks 3. Ege Bamyasi 2. Tago Mago 1. Future Days
Snagged Rite Time when it was released and really didn't like it. I can't see it the way I used to, and now I like it a lot. If you have a well put together audio system, you'll hear lots of things on Rite Time that aren't audible on an average or mid-fi set up. For sure more effort went into Rite Time than some of the higher ranked albums listed here. It's sonically superior to just about every other Can album. Quite a few long time Can listeners have discovered new things and shifted their track and album preferences over the decades, but Future Days may be the evolutionary pinnacle of the Suzuki period, (again there are layers of information that may not show up on a less than excellent audio system). Karoli, (the guitarist) had been exceptionally focused for a two to three year period while developing much of what's on Future Days. It's the last Can album Suzuki was on and it documents audio psychoactive properties that 60's psychedleia barely hinted at. Anyone who digs the top 5 here may want to track down Holger Czukay's Movies and On The Way To The Peak Of Normal albums. Both are a stunningly narcotic and stand on the shoulders of some great Can releases.
To be fair, it is Out Of Reach we’re talking about. ‘Like Inobe God’ isn’t that bad, but it does sound like Two Man Sound backing Robert Wyatt on a ketamine binge.

I read they recorded all material live at home (probably at least up till Future Days) on a 2-track, then edited the material into albums

Comparing CAN to Santana and Herb Albert is a TRUE INSULT For us Europeans
LOL….
