There's a scene shortly after where Bernice, their daughter, talks to her dad and she says she's worried about survival. And I used to think she was talking about surviving financially if her parents divorced but now I feel like she meant surviving with her neurotic, narcissistic mother.

Such a good scene about a Mom mentoring her daughter - coming from a place of wisdom. Teaching that cooler heads prevail. Fight with, not against. Focus on the most important goal. We all could use a Cloris at our most broken time 💔

I will never understand why Americans throw their elders into prisons when they get old instead of taking care of them.

Dude, I thought you were talking about the Mexican mother at first. Deborah is the epitome of western toxic femininity. Cloris is just looking out for her own best interest, trying to prevent her daughter from ruining a good living off her son in law.

This movie is so underrated. It's so good. Tea Leoni is amazing and absolutely unhinged in this film. I shouldn't laugh, but she juat takes it to another level ,😂😂😂 Brilliant acting for everyone , even the kids. The acting makes the movie 💯

The end of this clip is bittersweet. Deborah realizes what's important, but John is already gone. Cloris Leachman was so good in this, like everything she's ever done.

Deborah of an extreme example of the western toxic female. They don't ever learn. They only get moments of clarity to fake remorse long enough to fool their husbands for awhile, and then they slip right back into their toxic behavior. Seen it a bunch of times. If women like Deborah were really remorseful and wanted to change, every psychologist in this country would be booked for the next 10 years.

Cloris is/was a national treasure like no other. Her talent and creativity and humanistic involvement were invaluable. I was once in a production of “Oklahoma” w her. She can anything and be very modest. She’s just the loveliest person. Her ads for Peta are great.

Lots of western women are like Deborah. You don't see this so much in other parts of the world. Not sure if it's something in the water or what? Nature, nurture or both.

@@TheBashar327It is because of the high level of drugs and alcohol consumed in the US. The mother was an alcoholic and she did not give her a stable home, of course that will have an impact on adulthood. There are a lot of Deborahs (male and female) out there because the upbringing was unstable. It's called generational trauma.

    • @TheBashar327

@@Andy-nv6ys, true, there are both genders of Deborah, but women get more of a pass. The US definitely has a drinking problem. They serve alcohol in a lot more public places and cheaper than the US, but it is extremely rare to see anyone falling down drunk, obnoxious or belligerent over there. There's still a very conservative social stigma against such public displays. Not that it doesn't happen, but a lot rarer.

You know, even back then when I watched this for the first time not knowing about the destructive agenda of feminism and femnists, I realized what she said and what her mother told her to say was not "politically correct" or feminist. Instead it was reasonable and most important it was the right thing to do.
A feminist would have told her to scream and rant and make demands and destroy her marriage.
