  • Recently Wifey & I were in Monterey, California and we decided to visit the Old Fisherman's Wharf for dinner. We made a reservation and ate at the Old Fisherman's Grotto Restaurant. I can highly recommend this restaurant. I gave it 5 stars on Google. The service was as good as we've ever had and the Halibut dinner we had was incredible.
While waiting for our reservation, I went on a walking tour of Fisherman's Wharf.
The Wharf is a very cool spot to hang out for sightseeing, people watching and there are some fantastic restaurants.
Here is a playlist of our adventure travels in Oregon & California on this trip.

I was born in Monterey and visited the many times after moving away. Just the sound of seagulls and I can smell the salty air and fresh clam chowder and hear the barking sea lions!

Many memories there in 1966-67 when I was "up the hill" learning Hungarian at the Defense Language Institute. The window from my window in those old WWII barracks looked down on the wharf and Monterey Bay!

This is too funny, I work at the Grotto and at Scales. A customer came in last night to the grotto and told me she had seen me on UA-cam. Of course, I had to see the video she was talking about. I'm the chowder girl at Scales handing you and your wife the samples of chowder!!

I come to Monterey every June and July to visit my uncle and cousins, I have since I've been little. Now I'm 23, and everytime I'm there I must make multiple stops here. The smell of seafood in the air, the aquarium, and seafood restaurants amazing me, even after seeing it for countless times. I was born and raised in a small Pennsylvania farming community so seeing sights like this always left a mark on me.

Been there many times since 1986. Try to get back every couple of years. For military and military retired there is a nice Family Campground at NPG. So strange driving through nearby abandoned Fort Ord. Of course the main attraction is the aquarium. In 1991 we were "members" and could freely wander in anytime. I miss living there, all except the morning fog. Used to jog from Fishermen Wharf to Lovers Point and back. Lovely place.

I go there once a year. My dad has golfing tournaments and we make a family trip out of it. I went on Randy's Fishing trip (5:22). But since last year they were bought out. And now it costs twice as much.

Very true. When I was an infantryman at Fort Ord(back when there still WAS a Fort Ord) we used to go to the wharf and eat. Their clam chowder is the very best. They would scrape out a _stump_ of sourdough and then fill it with the chowder. Absolutely scrumptious!
In the summer it was always cold and REALLY foggy... and the steam rising up from the sourdough and chowder was pure divine.
      I really miss Planet Ord!!

My hometown. I grew up there. The best place on earth................I worked for Mrs. Elves at The Harbor House in the 90s along with many great restaurants I cooked at. Its a very cool place. I do miss it. I was good to live there before the area became tourist mecca. Cannery Row used to be so rustic and magical. Its now a shop after shop, after shop of novelty crap and taffy and fudge places. Oh well..............

We were there yesterday for my birthday at Old fishermen's Grotto and they have the best clam chowder and fresh oysters. This is just one of the best places to eat. Oh I made this post not knowing which place you were eating at. We ate there to. They have three of those Restaurants there. There are two at fishermen's wharf. The other one has an oyster bar that we ate at yesterday. It is the best. And the one you guys ate at there has the best Chocolate cake I have ever ate in my life.

And yes, to anyone wondering why "sunny California" is so overcast in June is because pretty much the West Coast north of Santa Barbara tends to be foggy and overcast in the summer because the heat of the inland valleys of California pull in the clouds. So if you want clear skies on the West Coast, actually your best bet is to visit in the much less crowded *and* less expensive winter "off season."

That tiny little monkey died. It was said that the beast was never ever properly rested. The tourists would laugh and stomp their feet at him trying to scare him, and make him run back and forth trying to avoid their harassment.
He collapsed one day and his handler refused to seek medical attention for him... too expensive he said.
