    The Car’s the Star. Quentin was the first TV host for Top Gear, way back, so to see him on the show is testament indeed for the future of the car and urban mobility. Excellent interview.

      Actually, the first Top Gear was hosted by Angela Rippon and Tom Coyne and came from Pebble Mill. Various others (Including Noel Edmonds) came in over the years. But Quentin seemed to have a background in the motor industry and presented the technical knowledge very well. Until they had a shakeup in the early noughties and the program became less about cars and more about spectacle and stupidity. These days it seems to have disappeared down a country lane where spectacle and technical knowledge are in short supply. Excellent stuff here from Quentin and Robert.

      First host of top gear. Noel Edmonds, Angela Rippon any maybe even William Willard will be so sorry that they have been forgotten. Quentin was one of the greats but not the first.

    Two legends there that are capable of adapting to new technologies and embracing change - which is more than can be said for most of their contemporaries.

    Fantastic (English….) interview. Mature, lucid and absent American bawling at each other. Keep it up!

    I attended the first two Fully Charged shows and the positivity was infectious - an incredible experience. To see Quentin and Robert chatting together is fantastic and should be the basis of a mainstream TV show. Like the ICE vehicles they perpetuate, programmes like Top Gear are now dinosaurs too.

    Excellent interview, and thanks for the opportunity to watch this in full after catching the short edit - I enjoyed every minute of it.

    I've seen both of you report on EV technology, but to see the two of you sat together and 'chewing the fat' is akin to seeing the Jedi counsel in session. It is a powerful thing to see.

    Simply great to see Quentin in discussion. Didn't know he was quite so pro electric vehicles (or other zero emission vehicles). I'll be following him for sure.
    Interesting point made that electric cars are not just environmentally less damaging, but they're BETTER CARS.

    Thanks for a really enjoyable conversation between two pioneers of the EV age. It is easy to forget how far technology has moved in the last 10 to 12 years and exciting to think how it could develop in the next 10. I am lucky enough to live in South West France and have owned a Kia e-NIro for over 3 years which last year was 75% powered by the 8 solar panels on the roof of my 200 year old stone barn. Have just added a few more which should cover all our driving now. I highly recommend Quentin’s video ‘UK to France, 769 miles, can we do it?’....when he drives the Model 3 to our neck of the woods.

    As a car enthusiast, the next decade is going to be extraordinarily exciting. The moment that the charging infrastructure allows me to tow a large caravan long distances, I’ll be over the moon to scrap my diesel and go EV.

    • @barriewilliams4526
      @barriewilliams4526 2 роки тому +1

      I don't think you will be over the moon when road pricing come into place due to the lost revenue in fuel tax & VED. The new technology involved in EVs lends itself perfectly to road pricing, not to mention controlling the speed & the tracking of your vehicle. Be careful what you wish for.......

      @michaelroberts7549 2 роки тому

      @@barriewilliams4526 we can only hope! As some who does a lot of long distance driving, I think that vehicle charging is the only logical option. If having tolls meant that we had a better road network, I’d gladly pay.

    Great interview. You talk a lot of sense Robert and I'm sure electric is the way forward for allsorts. Don't forget though in the short term EVs aren't so green. CO2 used to manufacture a new EV is much more than diesel/ petrol. Would take a few years to counteract that. Think I might keep running my very economical diesel for a bit before I make the very big investment in an EV.
    Can't see batteries being used for large airlines any time soon unless battery energy density approaches that of jet fuel! Maybe use electric generated hydrogen?
    Ps
    You were great in scrapheap challenge!

    Instead of just focusing solar and wind we should also be looking to invest in tidal, like Orbital Marine's O2. The tide is very predictable, much more so than wind and solar.

    "Yeah but you cant do a road trip in an EV. How long would it take to get to the south of France?"
    As someone who has just taken a Tesla Model 3 to see a friend just south of Bordeaux (near Cadillac) and back in the last fortnight - it was easy. Arrived at Ferry Terminal at IJmuiden, Netherlands. Two overnight stops (actually seeing other friends which was handy) The trickiest bit was finding some of the more obscure places they put in Superchargers. Visited other friends and spent a day in La Rochelle too. This is not a real objection.

    The problem is that buying a cheap 2nd hand petrol car outright can be less than the cost of a lease for a year. That means you need to have quite high running costs to make electric worthwhile. Even if you're keen on fighting for the environment you have to ask yourself if blowing the money on a car is better than e.g. insulating your house or installing solar panels or choosing a more expensive renewable energy supplier. I'm hoping that the supply of 2nd hand electric cars is going to follow the sudden increases in the supply of new ones.

    It's odd, but I often see Robert Llewellyn interviewing experts on his Podcast/YT Channel, and he often mentions that he knows nothing. Clearly, he's being far too modest. What he lacks in expert detail he certainly makes for with his overall vision. It's no wonder that he's a consultant to parliamentary committees on the subject. And Quentin just knows his stuff through and through. Great chat.

    All I know is this!
    My 2017 30kwh Nissan Leaf lies about its capable range, just as much as nissan used to lie about their diesel emissions.
    It tells you it'll do 125 miles on a full charge & won't do anywhere near that, also absolutely crap for motorway driving. However it's a nice city car or country road within your own county!
    So I need to buy a far better car, that doesn't lie, that actually does 250 to 300 miles & actually affordable for normal, low wage people, who can't have solar to charge it up for free etc ..
    What's sad, is that probably the only next option open for me, is to buy a French tin can, when I'd love to actually be buying British 🇬🇧
    Please push something through to make it work for mere mortals like myself 😉
    Ps great programme Rob ✌🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧✌🏻

    When I can buy a reliable and cheap, used EV that will last as long as my current petrol-driven car has lasted me (20 years) I might consider it.
