    For me it's the 110-130 miles to visit my parents (one way) that I sometimes do as a return trip in a single day that is my fringe requirement. 250 miles real world range in any weather is the point where I no longer have range anxiety, or need to use a 3 pin plug at my parents (and their electricity) to charge.

    47:55 Robert made his own shoes when he was 19 or 20 years old... so cool. Like Ben, I too have a pair of Allen Edmonds shoes that look very similar. So nice to see a pair of shoes that can be worn for years (until our feet expand as Robert points out). The foam and fabric disposable shoes we have now are comfortable and look good for such a short period of time. Rarely more than a year.

    Robert, I still have a 70 Jaguar E-type OTS. I can put more in the Frunk of our Model 3 than I can in the boot of the OTS! I started my car career loving Brit iron and eventually the Datsun Z. The M3 is my second new car purchase in 45 years!

And the ride although basic by modern standards, is still good. As to storage. Well you don't by an E-Type to go shopping. Unless you're just buying a jar of olives. If you want space, the Mk 10 would suit or perhaps the Jensen Interceptor.

      They will have to as costs fall and Tesla eat into their mid-range and luxury sales. That is where most carmakers make their money. Plus as more countries and states make rules to phase out ICE vehicles in 2030, they will see big chunks of their future market disappear if they don't catch up fast. Otherwise Tesla, Hyundai etc will be impossible to compete with.

      Agreed. The problem is Tesla is so much better at it. It is incredibly disappointing, especially as an american, to see so many companies resist the change, but having taken possession of my P3D+.... its a goddamn masterpiece. I mean its so good, I can't even put words to it. I would go as far as to say it is the best car ever made period. If you consider it can beat most ferraris on a track (for a time attack at least), it can out run almost all street legal OEM cars on the drag strip (and has allegedly beaten the demon in the 1/8, but I am not sure about that), its cheaper than a Prius to drive per mile after initial purchase cost, and the interior is better than a BMW M series, all in a package that is expensive, but not unreasonable, and cargo capacity you will never get out of any other performance track capable car, period.
      I can compare my car to other EVs, but why the hell would I? Name another EV that even comes close to a P3D. It can't be done. Not for the price, not for the performance, not for the range, and not for the practicality, the closest thing is another Tesla, and even THOSE aren't as good on a track, and cost a lot more for models that out perform it, though they do come with double the cargo.

      @@dreiak Hi Erik - what's a P3D? Is it a Tesla Model 3 All wheel drive?! I have one on order here in the UK since it was announced but us Right Hand Drivers will be last on the build tracks...

    • @zelekuther7938
      @zelekuther7938 5 років тому +1

      P3D is short-hand for the Performance Model 3. Model S and X use the prefix "P" to denote the performance version and the suffix "D" to denote a dual motor version, so Tesla fans have created the moniker "P3D" for the performance model 3, which somewhat follows the convention that the S and X use. Since the performance model 3 has a 75kWh battery, I guess it should really be called a Model 3 P75D, but no-one refers to it that way, which I think is a shame.

    Prince of Wales was a title granted to princes born in Wales from the 12th century onwards; the term replaced the use of the word king. One of the last Welsh princes, Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, was killed in battle in 1282 by Edward I, King of England, whose son Edward (born in Caernarfon Castle in 1284) was invested as the first English Prince of Wales in 1301.
    Since the 14th century, the title has been a dynastic title granted to the heir apparent to the English or British monarch, but the failure to be granted the title does not affect the rights to royal succession. The title is granted to the heir apparent as a personal honour or dignity, and is not heritable, merging with the Crown on accession to the throne. The title Earl of Chester is always given in conjunction with that of Prince of Wales. The Prince of Wales usually has other titles and honours.

    When you mentioned the Nissan E-NV 200, I was kinda cringing. A good friend of mine works in UK with a delivery company that bought a fleet of these EV vans, and per his experience, their range on a charge in winter was so extremely poor that their drivers had to opt to NOT use electric cabin heating to conserve energy and use seat heating at best. He stated that 40 miles on a charge in winter was best they could do.
    I attribute such a poor range on a charge to several reasons. Li-ion batteries are notoriously sensitive to low temperatures, especially in Nissan E-NV 200 which is basically a remodelled Leaf with 24 KWh battery at best (with first generation). Add full cargo load, and no wonder the range in winter is so low.

    Yes we do need that many and more public chargers, because of the the amount of people with cars that don't have a dedicated parking space to put a charger because they live in a flat or don't have off street parking. Workplace chargers are the first important one, these can be cheap slow chargers as they are parked all day. And Shops, Supermarkets etc need medium fast chargers 20-50kW so they can get a decent charge for the half hour to few hours or so that they are parked shopping. And then the motorway systems need banks of rapid chargers (at least 100kW) with lots of points for sudden influxes, Like Tesla Superchargers.

      Yep. Hit the respective nails on the heads there. So many people assume that if you can afford an EV, you'll also own a house with off-street parking, to charge your vehicle at home. And that you'll almost never drive more than 130mi/240km from home. And if you ask nicely, an employer will install a charge point, maybe two or three, (in their non-existent car park).

    I was lucky to get to Bobby's "Fully Charged Live!" event held in Silverstone Race Circuit during August this year. I was also taken to and from the parking via one of the many "Tesla Taxis" Bobby mentioned. I recall it was a white Model S with white painted wheels. Myself and the other occupants got properly "Ludicrous'ed" on one of the straights. It's kind of like in between a Theme Park ride and a Movie Special effect. Not even my beloved old Jaguar XJ-S with a V12 motor could deliver that kind of Starship acceleration.

    200 miles range is what we'll be looking for. Could accept 175, but no less. We often need to cover that distance in a day, in a county with very few public charging points that are faster than 7 kW (most of the small total are as slow as 3kW). And no way can we afford to wait for 4 hours or more to recharge every 75 miles. My bladder range (I'm older than Robert) is not coffee-dictated, and is at least 200 miles on motorways.

    The biggest takeaway for me was at 1:00:20, when Robert talks about functioning solid state batteries that have 10x the energy density of current lithium ion batteries (made of carbon, no degradation, no heating issues, lighter weight). Once this is realized, a standard EV range would jump from 200-300 miles to over 2 or 3 THOUSAND miles of range. Assuming reasonable cost, a current Tesla would seem primitive, and ICE vehicles would seem ridiculous. An exciting next few years on planet Earth.

    Listening to the recommended range of an EV of being around 200miles when I'm planning my 400mile round trip tomorrow which for me is a regular occurrence is frustrating. Might be fine for 95% of the population but not for those of us fixing other peoples problems and having to travel so far on each journey. Did 440miles yesterday. I would not want to have to spend time at a charging station on route when I'm already short on sleep and held up by hours on our unfit for purpose motorways here in the UK. It's actually possible to spend 10hours on a journey in the UK. Spent 6hours just going London to home (200)mile, and another journey from Cardiff to Edinburgh (420mile) took 11hours when M6 was closed which seems a regular occurrence.

    The simple way to create charging points everywhere is to put a simple socket on every streetlight pole after that light is converted to LED lighting. LED compared to regular streetlights high press sodium light bulb technology drops the power requirements by 90 percent by going to LED. When switching the streetlights to LED if they also added a 240 volt outlet without a cable then ev charging would literally be everywhere. The EV owner simply provides his own cable to plug his EV in to charge at at 15-20 amps will charge the EV overnight or during the workday so you don't need a dedicated charger unless you need a higher charge rate for a road trip.
    Cheers!

Just because Napoleon wanted to give the finger to the Pope in Europe, and drive on the WRONG side, (and Teamsters wanted to drive on the RHS in the States as it was easier to control their horses, what with them riding on the rearmost left animal so that a whip in the right hand could reach the whole team without crossing their own body, and they could also see oncoming traffic from the middle of the road), does not mean that they are right, LOL.

  • @GordonChaffin

    Great chat. The ideal range answer is probably 250-350, like a common ICE car. However, the charging speed is the real issue. We need to get to 80% in less than 15 mins without doing serious damage to the battery. The most important tech advance here will be heat management and electric power meditation. I don't know much about electricity, but 400 kW charging is probably very stressful to the grid and the battery. I could magically put 400 kW in 10 charging stations at every American gas station. But, the EVs would all limit that because it would fry their batteries.

  • @Wookey.
    @Wookey. 5 років тому

    It takes me more than 10 hours to drive to Skye from Cambridge, so there are plenty of > 10hr trips even within the UK. And if you include the rest of Europe some things are really quite a long way. I drive to Austria most years and that's typically 16 hours from Dunquerque, 19 from Cambridge (and you can't charge on the boat yet). Bottom of France is ~12 hours. Far edge of Spain is 20 hours, and so on. Go to Greece or Albania and that's getting to be a really long drive you really can't do in a day. OK, it's not quite as big as the US, but there is no shortage of long drives, and if you've ever tried going caving, climbing or campervan-ing by train, sometimes you really do need a car for all the kit. My van does 650 miles on a tank so I can get to Austria with one or two fills. OK, that's more than most cars, but people like me really are in the market for 300 mile, quite spacious, vehicles. The Buzz might do the trick, or a Master with a 3-times bigger battery. Or the Rivian base with a camper body. I'm sure we'll get there, but 150 mile cars don't really help at all. I have a bike for short trips to work/shops/pub, which is 96% of then.

    I've had a Zoe for 18 months now and although the range is fine most of the time it really needs 300 miles or a five minute top up time and 200 miles range to make is as practical as an ICE car for me. I really like the car and enjoy the driving experience but on the occasional long journey I have to drive slower and take longer breaks to charge, this is currently mitigated by the miniscule running costs. It would also help if there were enough chargers to allow me to make journeys without planning where to charge too. I think it is a great pity the I-Pace is so inefficient, just think what the range would be if it could get 4 miles per kwh.

    Personally living in Europe for me 300 miles / 500 km of official range with fast charging that takes 30min or less is the point where an EV gets equivalent to an ICE car in flexibility. 300 miles / 500 km of official range gives you more than 225 miles / 350km to really work with (charging only to 80-90% for battery health and leaving 5-10% at the bottom to not run the battery "dry").
    With 350 km of real range I can get to all relevant places and back without recharging, even when sacrificing some range for speed. If I have to do longer trips I only have to charge once to get everywhere else in Germany. That small bit of planning does not matter to me and now I also stop at least once for fuel and to pee anyways.

    Tesla has a store in downtown Düsseldorf and it has been mobbed recently. People are standing in line just to sit in the Model 3.
    About range, I doubt it is a limiting factor for EV sales now. Lack of batteries is the limiting factor, so putting bigger batteries in vehicles seems counterproductive. There are ten hour drives in Europe. For example Hamburg to Vienna is over ten hours. But flying or taking a train makes a lot more sense. Why drive at all?

      Biodiesel uses Palm Oil. The Palm Oil Industry is destroying large rain forests in Indonesia to grow palm trees for selling palm oil. The biggest use of palm oil is in bio diesel. So even bio diesel causes large scale deforestation.

    • @pegr69
      @pegr69 5 років тому

      @@evthink Well, both yes and no, HVO100 uses PFAD which is a unusable part that comes out of the palmoil production. Although is is "only" 5% of the total product that is currently PFAD, the rest is a combination of among others cellulose, animal remnants from slughter houses, used frying oil and the such. I am not trying to excuse it but, well it is a choice between fossil oil which is also really bad or HVO100 which then is only 5% "bad". However HVO100 has been made w/o palmoil for quite some time as well, but not all manufacturers do that.

    Compare I-Pace to P3D+. Tesla has better handling, better speed, better range, lower cost. I don't buy it. This car is still just 2nd best, even if its not a bad car compared to other cars, the P3D is simply the best car on the market today, and maybe the best car ever made period. It is so many pros, and so few cons. I suppose the I-Pace might be a bit more comfortable on dirt, gravel, and off road, but lets be honest, who the hell buys a jag for that? Realistically it will be a daily driver city car and grocery getter. I am still confused why so many people want a worse drive on daily boring streets in an SUV than in a car, which is far more fun on the streets to drive than an SUV. This thing isn't big enough for the extra size or storage to be a good excuse.

    My first car was terrible. A v8 mercury cougar. low output V8 at that. A full tank of gas, about 65-70 litres, only took you 400km. You could manage 430km if you ran it dry and at low highway speeds. If I could get into all sort of teenage shenanigans with that old junker then an electric with 400km highway range is just fine. That's about 250 miles for the Americans.
    the plan is still to by a model 3 or a Hyundai Kona, both will have ranges close or above that 400km mark. A long trip would mean 700 km a day if you start with a full charge and charge once to 80% during the day. That is more than enough.

If an ICE Jag does only 20 mpg, because it is being driven like a race car, the owners do not mind, as that is the reason that they bought it ! Same will apply to a BEV Jag.
