    Surely, the piano has an important part to play in this work - even "à quatre mains" for the the last part (see the score at Donemus);
    However, it seems strange that a soloist of Curzon's stature should be involved/hired for
    1/ contemporary music - he hardly ever played an atonal note - I think!
    2/ the original Decca recording doesn't mention his name on the sleeve
    3/ on the sleeve note Pijper states that his symphony is not a concerto. The use of the piano is "integral part of the orchestration".
    This is not a "symphonie concertante" cfr. Szymanowsky nr 4 or the eponymous work by Florent Schmitt. Prokofiev, Honegger, Stravinsky etc. use the piano for coloristic effects. The use of a great (expensive?) virtuoso isn't necessary.
    4/ if it is indeed Curzon performing, why isn't the other pianist mentioned?
    5/ possibly Curzon , who had recorded Brahms 1st concerto with van Beinum in that same period, did the conductor a friendly favor. Surely such an event would be documented??
    Who knows more?
