Gene is a monster, his stuff in Testament is crazy, too, probably not quite as involved as Death, but he's done some brutal work on the latests Testament albums. One of the best ever, he'll always be high on my list, along with Sandoval and Lombardo.
He recorded "Darkness Descends" when he was just 16. His best work is still with Strapping, IMO.

@@riffgroove DA is brutal, for sure. I was heavy into thrash when I was first getting into music, so naturally, I heard quite a few songs from that album. It does rip. Pleasure To Kill was the one that pushed me beyond Slayer

I met Gene at Sounds of the Underground 2005, when he was filling in for Opeth.
"Hey, you're Gene Hoglan, right?"
"Yessir."
"Awesome! I'm really excited to see you play with Opeth, and Strapping Young Lad!"

He used do warmups with some big bones! Insane!
He used camco for so long, but he said that he decided it wasn’t worth trying to source the parts every time the things broke on the road. Eliminators feel pretty good and are plenty adjustable. I think he just uses the round cam and the settings right outta the box, since he’s all minimalist like that.
Saw him with SYL at Download in 2006. Such an awesome gig.

Oh man I was in that crowd at Download in 2006 too. Had never heard of SYL before they hit the stage, haven't forgotten them since.
I met Gene in the Paradiso, Amsterdam when my band was loading out. He was playing with Testament. He was so sound, we chatted for ages about Death and I got to ask him about Chuck etc which was extremely surreal for me being a massive Death fan. Good man Gene

I met Gene in 1998 and at that time he was so big he used a walking stick to get around. Was a nice guy, though. Signed all my stuff :D

I told him before on his twitch live stream his framerate was too low, but I don't think he'll ever make his stream high quality. Which is a shame cuz there are unknown drummers out there streaming with ten times the viewership he gets.

I had to stop watching the video over all the distortion. There's zero excuse in (current year) to not set your levels. If I can hack together a drum stream that don't clip, so can anyone.
