Well now I've done it. I couldn't resist to urge to pick up one of my favorite past time bikes. The Honda XR80R.
Believe it or not this was the first bike I ever learned to ride on!
Join me as we rip into this 1998 Honda XR80R to see just how beat up it is and with less than 24hrs to get this thing ready to be packed up for a trip south. We definitely have our work cut out for us.
Discover just how much this XR really needed to get it ready for whatever I throw at it.
    ENJOY!

Uncle Cody brings a dirt bike to the party. This is how legends are made and the proud status of "favorite uncle" is achieved. Well done sir. 👍

I bought my daughter a CRF70 from a teenage boy it was caked in mud no rear brakes valves needed adjusted grips were almost gone. We cleaned it up tinkered with it a little and threw a few new parts on it and she loves it. All she wants to do is ride.

I just picked up a 99 XR80r today for $70. Was browsing Facebook and saw it laying in a pile of scrap, original plan was to save the frame from being scrapped but then I found out the guy had most of the bike stored away. Wound up buying the whole thing and have been putting it back together. Sadly a few things are missing but it’s 90% complete, even had new chain, sprockets, and a meaty Dunlop geomaxx. Hope to have her back up and going soon

Wow. Thanks for this. If Uncle Cody decides to bring two xr80s to next year's family gathering (another xr80 mom could ride safely?), please include (even for pay, as that's how this platform seems to be evolving) ALL the teachable moments as you go though them. Great bikes, great memories both old and new with these machines. Thanks again.

It lives again cody. Well done. I just bought a 1996 XR200r. He wanted $2500 I got it for 2k. 2 owners. Normal dirt and scratches for age but I think it had not done a lot of work. Engine is imaculent , needed tyre , chain, fork seals, oil change. greased rear shock likages but didn't need it. It is a tidy unit. I was lucky. A Keeper. Thanks for doing some XR stuff. Everyone goes on about CRF/wrf high performance 4 stroke but they don't last as they don't look after them. The XR's don't rev as hard but will still be going long after the others. I remember the first XR75 coming out in 1973 ish.Like you I wanted 1 but by the time I could afford 1, I was too big for it so started on bigger xr's. I love them Even at 60y/o. PS Tell your dad to go to hell, He aint riding it. That will teach him not to get you 1. Keep em coming . Thumbs up from Australia.👍

I have two CRF80's for my boys. Perfect bike for them to play around on at 9-11 yr old. I always thoroughly clean it after every ride and trying to teach them that a well as that 15 min of work go such a long way w/o having the bike get caked up with mud, dirt n' grease after it sits for weeks between rides. Of course I have some OCD with having a clean bike, it does go along way with a good cleaning after every ride before putting it up. You may not have recorded it but did you check the valve clearance? Enjoyed the video

The teaching experience was there ! How to do basic Maintenance Keep up on the Maintenance / keep it clean so you can identify problems / or potential problems, and having a safe bike for family to learn how to ride.
Would you let your family ride that bike in the condition you received it in?

Hello Cody, I have an issue that perhaps you can help with.
I have a 2009 Yamaha WR250F which just had a bottom-end rebuild. We replaced the crankshaft, cylinder, and piston with brand new parts.
After reassembly, we went to start the bike and after a few minutes running we noticed that the oil tank was bulging and then burst open right under the fill/drain plug (see attached photo). We welded it shut, then started the bike. After leaving it running for a while to break in the new piston and cylinder, the oil tank burst open again, this time through the seams on the side.
We are stumped as to what can be causing such a build up of pressure in the oil system, enough to make the oil tank bulge, then burst. I should add that we did not overfill or exceed the oil capacity of the engine, in fact, we underfilled by 200ml.
Can you or anyone offer any insights?
    Much appreciated.

I can't believe he stopped up the carb bowl overflow line? That's really dumb. When you do that, the gas is going right into the cylinder (and maybe the airbox) mixing with the gas.
