You can still do this as well. A short hold (1 second) pulls up the control center and a long hold (2 seconds or more) takes you to PS home. It takes a second to get the timing right but the feature is most definitely there

Wow everything about that controller seems really cool except for that goofy feature of not allowing you to use it on PC unless you pay a subscription, that's just unnecessarily annoying lol

To Stream Playstation? Yes. You need the Playstation Remote Play app. You don't ever HAVE to use the Backbone App to use the controller. They just try to get you to.
Yes. In fact I just did that two days ago. BUT, you have to link your PS5 to your phone in person the first time. So do that before you travel. And you’ll need a good internet connection both at home and wherever you’ve traveled to. You can download the PlayStation Remote Play app from the App Store and it should walk you through the steps to set it up. When it works, it’s awesome. 😎
If I already subscribe this month and unlock the feature to use it in ipad, then I unsubscribe the next month, would I still be able to use it on my ipad?
Hello ! I was wondering how far the USB-C port sticks out of the controller ? My case has a thick bottom and I'm worried it's not gonna reach the port on my phone (my USB-C flashdrive doesn't fit). Thanks !
Does the usb port on Backbone supports audio or only for charging? I've always use a flat usb dongle for my wireless 2.4ghz earbuds when I play on my phone.
That’s a good question. I’m not sure, and I don’t have a way to test it. Theoretically it could work. You can use that port to turn it into a wired controller, so it can transfer data. But that feature is also blocked behind a pay wall(their subscription service). But I can’t say anything for sure. If you buy one and find out, I would be very curious to know the answer!
I know I plugged in my 20 W charger to the USB-C port and it did charge my phone, but I can’t confirm that it was fast charging my phone. So it did work with my fast charger, but I don’t know if it was throttling the charge or not.
What was the manufacturer thinking? After watching a few videos, I searched EXTRA for the 2nd generation variant for “Apple iPhone Android USB-C” when ordering and then ordered accordingly. Even if the manufacturer is probably completely surprised ... I actually have a very rare iPhone 15 Pro. Then I realized that the controller doesn't work with the iPhone at all. To make it compatible, you need an Android phone with USB-C - that makes sense, right? The best thing: I really had to search for a loooooong time to find someone in my environment with an Android phone ... but I managed it. Unfortunately, the controller then shows firmware version 1.2.1 ... along with the note that this is the latest version = no firmware update. The Backbone website then states that the controller for the iPhone 15 only works from version 1.2.2. That's what I call checkmate. I'm sending the space junk back now, and I'm buying a controller that works with the iPhone 15 Pro, just not from Backbone.
You do have to connect it to your PS5. The first time you do that you’ll need to be in the room with your PS5 to authorize the connection. After that, you can log onto it from anywhere. I’m not familiar with the game you mentioned, so I don’t know.
Yes! It was designed for exactly that purpose. Of course, and game that requires an internet connection, including services like PlayStation Remote Play, will still require internet no matter where you are. But the controller definitely works away from home.
@@Talkbookishwithme Of course. You can download the Playstation Remote Play app on your phone right now. Follow the steps in the app to link it to your Playstation. Then when you get your controller you can open up the PS Remote Play app and stream all your games from your console. No backbone + subscription needed. 🙂
@@Talkbookishwithme Personally, I'd rather have this than the portal because you can use it to play any game on your phone that supports a controller. That could be something from the app store or xbox game pass. Anything. The portal limits you to streaming from your console.
I have no idea why they placed the d-pad BELOW the left analog stick instead of on top, like a normal PS controller. If it weren't for that little mistake, I'd buy one right now.
They didn't have this partnership with Playstation when they designed the controller. So, moving the d-pad would've meant an internal and external redesign, which would have cut into profits. 😕
It works great for it once you're in a match. You have to use touch controls through the main menu though, and you also have to go to the settings first and check this tiny box that says "Enable Controller" or something like that. Otherwise it won't work. But I had a fun time playing with the controller.
If you’re only interested in playing PS5, the Portal is great. But something like this allows you to play while streaming from PS5, XBox Series, PC, Steam, or natively with any emulators installed on your phone, and mobile games that have controller support. So it’s quite a bit more versatile. Also quite a bit less expensive.
I love this controller but as for their subscription, as crazy as it is that it even exist for such an expensive controller, I think they only offer year subscriptions for $29.99 a year.
I could see charging a one time fee of $10-$15 to unlock all the app features. But locking hardware features behind a subscription paywall, at any price, is not a trend I want to see spreading.
That’s a really interesting idea. I don’t have a female usb-c cable though, so I can’t test that right now. I’m really curious to know the answer to your question though. Haha.
@BoKnowsGaming it works on the Backbone One 1st gen. Hence, you'd be able to connect and use the controller on your PC when using the cable I mentioned earlier; bypassing the need for a backbone+ subscription. If you ever try it out, please let me know 🙏
Holy crap, you’re right! That’s such a tricky timing. Too quick and you go to the Backbone App. Too long and you go to the Home menu. How did you figure that out?!
TY. I thought I tried that, but I guess not. It totally works! You still have to use the touchscreen to see those quick menu items though. I appreciate the comment! Thanks for watching!
They’re not identical, but they are comparable. Definitely not full size. Full size sticks would’ve been better. But then what reason would we have to upgrade when they put them in V. 3? 😬🫢
I have the black backbone gen 1 from long time ago and I never use it and I don't like the joystick I mostly play shooter games I'm thinking about getting the shadow blade 2 gamepad
Yeah, if you don’t like those joy-con size sticks this probably isn’t for you. Shadow Blade 2… is that the one by Nubia? 🤔 I think I saw that recently. Looks really nice, but pricey. 💰 I might have to add it to my list of things to review. 🙂
@@BoKnowsGaming Yeah. I have the gen 2. It's one of the best telescopic controllers around. The moment they release gen 3 that fits an 8 inch tablet, I'd buy that, too!
You're welcome. Subscriptions are the new accessories, apparently. I even saw an ad last week that was showing off how you can use it to play on iPad. No mention of the subscription in the ad. It's very deceptive. It's a shame, because the controller is genuinely nice.
Just a little step in here, you don’t need the subscription to play the games, the subscription (backbone+) just moves all the games that you own to the app for an easier launching experience, like the steam launcher but not yk?
This is a lie I have a Google pixel 8 pro doesn't fit with case also these adapters doesn't do anything can't even get them on or off nothing different from the first one all Cap 🧢
I had trouble removing the adapters the first time too. But I assure you they do come out, and my iPhone 15 Pro Max fits with the case on, and there’s room to spare. No cap 🧢 Thanks for watching. Hope you get the adapters out so you can start gaming!

Um, the portal has. A bigger screen. Dual sense controllers with all dual sense feathers like haptic feedback etc. lolol and yea the PlayStation button. It’s just better than the back bone.
That’s true, and the portal is great for PlayStation and the few games that take advantage of the dual sense. But this allows for much more versatility and a greater library of games from multiple services. So really it all depends on what you want to play. There’s nothing wrong with either way or either device.
The backbones analogs are nowhere near as comfortable as the portals. I’m sorry, the portal got it when it comes to playing PlayStation games. The backbone only shines when playing games on mobile. In every other aspect, the portal outshines it.
Oh for sure. The Portal sticks are definitely better! If all you want to play is PS5 on the go, the Portal is the best option. I completely agree with you on those points. I'm just saying if you also want to use GamePass, emulate retro games, play Apple Arcade, and utilize SteamLink, then the Backbone or similar mobile controller is the better choice. Again, it really depends on what your interests are.
@@GamingWithAce85One problem I found with my Portal is the micro-stuttering. It refreshes at 59.94hz, most smartphones have a refresh rate of 60+. Because of this, you get micro-stutter on the Portal and it can be quite jarring in some games like Red Dead Redemption 2.
It's a weird choice. Imagine if you bought a LG tv and they said, "You own the tv, but if you want the HDMI ports to work you have to pay us $5 a month." That would be absurd.
I never had the gen 1, so I can’t compare them. I’m just reviewing it like it is. And yeah, a LOT of people are more interested in a controller that allows you to keep your phone case on. That was probably the biggest complaint I heard from people about the 1st gen Backbone. Thanks for watching! 🙂
That's true. There were about 4 games you could play for free including Destiny 2. But I also purchased games and subscribed for a few months, and you definitely got the most out of the service as a subscriber. I loved that controller. I still use it on PC sometimes. My joke was meant to be light hearted and fun. Sorry it offended you.
I don’t care if it was 5¢/month. There shouldn’t be a subscription fee on hardware like this. It would be like paying $3.99/month to use the space bar on my computer. It’s ridiculous.
to those planning to get this to pair for ps5, dont. stop. just get the ps portal...i returned my bacbone today to bestbuy. and just got the portal...i didnt like the flimsy feel of backbone and when i get so active on buttons its getting errors on my iphone as not compatible accessory. i dont want to spend alot coz i have ps5 already but the gaming experience is trash in backbone...portal is still a different level so its worth the cost. peace.
The Portal is cool if you’re only interested in PS5. But if you also want to play Steam Link or Xbox or even Apple Arcade, you would need something like this. A mobile gaming controller gives you more options.

I tried it but ultimately disappointed because it’s too small on my hands. Im glad i got to return it and bought the gamesir G8
That's cool. I understand. I haven't tried the g8 yet, but I want to!
@BoKnowsGaming nothing bad with the backbone but after playing after 1 hour. My hands were starting to feel uncomfortable for my hands😭
I get it. Gotta find the best controller for you. Everyone's hands are different.
Can you test if a female usb-c to male usb-c/usb-a connected to your PC through the usb-c on the controller that goes into your phone would work?
It works with gen 1, just curious to know if they blocked this hack with the gen 2 version
If you ever try it out, please let me know 🙏
Will do. Thanks for the advice!
I can confirm this works on the Gen 2 with my tab s7+
The backbone button works like the PS button. Just have to press it for half second or hold it
Yeah. I realize that now. 🤦♂️ It takes you to the home screen. But it still doesn't open the PS5 Control Center sub menu.
@@BoKnowsGaming it does. Try pressing for half second or less
Holy crap, you’re right! That’s such a tricky timing. Too quick and you go to the Backbone App. Too long and you go to the Home menu. How did you figure that out?!
I only use my backbone for the psp emulator which works perfectly
@@Wolfdamunch Yeah, it’s great for that!
There is no reason for the backbone to have the curve at the bottom. It prevents foldables from being comfortably compatible
That is unfortunate.
6:38 he became a legend 😅
You talking about my improv Stadia joke? 😂
@@BoKnowsGaming lol yes the blooper made it 10x funnier
Haha. Thanks!
Hold the orange button to go to PS5 homescreen.
TY. I thought I tried that, but I guess not. It totally works! You still have to use the touchscreen to see those quick menu items though. I appreciate the comment! Thanks for watching!
Hold that orange button for 1 sec for menu
It $40 a year just to act like a hub for games. You don’t need it to use the controller. Just wait for sale on this thing, full price is not worth it.
It’s not a monthly subscription? Just a flat, annual price?
@@BoKnowsGaming you get a year free then they charge annually $39.99
Hmm. Interesting. Thanks for the info! 🙂
For me, until the PS Portal allows Web authentication for public Internet, I will stick with Backbone.
Good call. Smart.
What does that mean out of curiosity?
If this goes well, it might replace my wired 360 controller.
I still have a wired 360 controller! It doesn’t get much use anymore though. Hope it goes well for you!
They should've made the thumbsticks bigger for this 2nd gen version. If these are still comparable to joycons, then good luck playing FPS's. It sucks.
@@BoKnowsGaming Naw you know the gamesir g8 galileo gamepad right the shadow blade 2 is just red magic rebranded version but in all black
@@BoKnowsGamingShadow blade 2 It the exact samething as gamesir g8 galileo but in all black and some logo change to red magic logo
Cool. I like it.
@@BoKnowsGaming I personally don't like the colors of the gamesir g8 galileo that why I said shadow blade 2
Does it work with galaxy a32 5g do you know???
I don’t know, but Backbone’s website says that “Android devices running Android 10.0 or later with USB-C are supported.”
Dang and I got the 1st gen of the backbone one like 6 months ago 😢
Oh man. That stinks. Maybe you could sell it and buy the new one? 🤷♂️ 😕
I love Backbone One gen 2. Too bad it doesn't fit an 8" tablet.
I’ve heard from a lot of people that wish it could fit a tablet. I think they should really consider that for Gen 3.
@@BoKnowsGaming Yeah. I have the gen 2. It's one of the best telescopic controllers around. The moment they release gen 3 that fits an 8 inch tablet, I'd buy that, too!
Not really related but I was flying out of the Denver airport and one of the kiosk ladies was playing PUBG on her phone😂
That's hilarious. Was she using a controller or touch controls?
Can you still play play store app games on it like the other backbone? I'd rather just use epic and play Fortnite
@@zackaryaustin4185 Absolutely. As long as the game has controller support.
@BoKnowsGaming thanks mate
Ty for telling about the subscription. I almost bought this controller just for that reason. What BS
4:51 Ladies and gentlemen, we live in a world where people are too stupid to read instructions.
What can I say? Sometimes people make mistakes. Thanks for watching. 🙂
No cap 🧢
Thanks for watching. Hope you get the adapters out so you can start gaming!
I play on an android tablet with the cord without a subscription with no problem
What kind of cord?
Okay not gonna get it cause of that damn subscription.
😂 I can’t say I blame you. It’s a really great controller, but that part aggravates me too.
😂😂😂😂 when you order a remote and find out you got to pay to use the charger in a youtube video lol 😆 😂
@@Ktmdukejake if this becomes a trend moving forward, I’m going to learn to build my own hardware. Ridiculous.
@@BoKnowsGaming it is init lol it take 1 min for it to click it like the plug checked you paid your subscription its next level lol 😆 😂 yeah I paid mid game my phone was dying and I was like this is where it gets you lol as I was 100% not paying it lol call of duty mobile is worth 3.99 a month I guess lol 😆 🤣
@@BoKnowsGaming Agreed!
It is 27US Dollars a year
Cool.
Subscription to use usb c port as display out? Lol, screw this company! I'm not getting near their products.
It's a weird choice. Imagine if you bought a LG tv and they said, "You own the tv, but if you want the HDMI ports to work you have to pay us $5 a month." That would be absurd.
Gamesir G8 Galilleo is way better
I already plan on reviewing that one next. 🙂
not for COD mobile on Android.
We get Extorted all the time in life smh
Well, I'm not paying them for that one. Haha.
People really be saying a gen 2 is better just so you dont have to take a case off?? My case is easily removable so its not a big deal
@@BoKnowsGamingOh alright! Thank you!
No problem. See you around. 🙂
@@BoKnowsGaming of course!
Not needing to remove a case every time makes it objectively better...
Didn’t need a subscription to use Google Stadia. Please do better research before taking shots
$3.99/month is NOTHING lol
I don’t care if it was 5¢/month. There shouldn’t be a subscription fee on hardware like this. It would be like paying $3.99/month to use the space bar on my computer. It’s ridiculous.
Terrible review
Bummer that you didn't like it, but thanks for watching anyway!
@@BoKnowsGaming actually it was a great review since u replied!!
Haha. Alright! 👍👍
to those planning to get this to pair for ps5, dont. stop. just get the ps portal...i returned my bacbone today to bestbuy. and just got the portal...i didnt like the flimsy feel of backbone and when i get so active on buttons its getting errors on my iphone as not compatible accessory. i dont want to spend alot coz i have ps5 already but the gaming experience is trash in backbone...portal is still a different level so its worth the cost. peace.
The Portal is cool if you’re only interested in PS5. But if you also want to play Steam Link or Xbox or even Apple Arcade, you would need something like this. A mobile gaming controller gives you more options.
You didn't include the price as to why they are both popular.
I stated that the price is $100, but I don't think that makes it popular. Do you think that's a fair price?
