@@gregowen2022 He was used to a very traditional, prescribed lifestyle in a remote village, but he goes out into the world and eventually learns there are other ways to be. I think it's fine for a character to have some negative traits, people do change, sometimes
@gregowen2022 That's why the whole, "Soka is sexist" arch never flew for me. Saying that men are better hunters is not sexist. Saying that men are better fighters is not sexist. These are modern day f'nist tropes that we have all accepted and have been beat over the head with. Did Soka get humbled and grow? Yes. And that is a good thing. But to say he was sexist is a stretch for me and a precursor to this new "GIRL BOSS" Era we find ourselves in.
Every time this happens, the story gets exponentially worse. Getting a committee of bad writers and people who don’t write and people who don’t people does not produce a satisfying human story.
"people who don't people" That's a good one--not sure if it's a typo but it reminds me of the old cultural meme about "failing at adulting." Well it's all the more relevant now that people are in a terminally online, prolonged adolescent state. It's not just the field of candidates for any job anymore, it's the hiring committees and HR teams that are full of these "people." Completely senseless and out of touch. Couldn't pass a psych eval to save their lives.
To quote a UA-camr I watch, "Animation is a Medium, not a Genre." It always ticks me off when people say "It's just for kids." While there are some movies and TV shows that are entirely for kids, (cough Trolls cough,), so many of these "kids" movies and TV shows are deeper than most of the adult media I consume. I think that's because kids and family movies aren't afraid to hold back with life lessons. I would much rather watch a "kids" movie that I can learn from and gain understanding from, than a silly light movie made "for adults".
@@gregowen2022 And the most stupid thing is that with all the complaints from the West to the Japanese media, for years now they have been classifying their animations by demographics, the kodomo for children from 4 to 8-9 years old, shonen that range from pre to teenagers and the seinen that is for +18 material. Brother, even your toku heroes have that format with super sentai, having a range of stories from esque-kodomo to shonen with some having their mature and dark themes. If you want something more esque-shonen, there are the kamen rider or ultraman, you want something more mature, there are the Garo series, even the riders themselves have a reboot with a more mature and adult tone.

When the creators left the project it was a sign, I saw the trailer and I was almost convinced but then I saw the statements and I knew that it is not going to work, it is another Netflix series being Netflix
when you see that video compilation of all the MCU writers one after the other saying "I never read the comics" or "I wasn't into the movies", and realize that all of these human AI bots that write this stuff all operate in the same mode, it's not hard to conclude that people who had a problem with Sokka's sexism got that fact in their heads from someone complaining in a blog post, not from watching the show.
2:44 "Just for Kids" I'm sorry did they miss the show includes but is not limited (Pause to take a Deep Breath) - Globe Spanning conflict that has defined entire generations of people - Survivor's Guilt from Aang being the Last Airbender - Genocide, like ACTUAL GENOCIDE of an entire Culture - Attempted Mass Murder on the part of Jet of an entire town because they are Firebenders - Child Abuse - Enslavement of vast groups of people due to said war effort - A child finding the CORPSE OF THEIR FOSTER PARENT IN FULL FUCKING VIEW FOR ALL TO SEE - A freaking Spirit that literally steals the faces from anyone and everything it encounters - Multiple on Screen deaths of characters. And that's just stuff in Book 1, you know,....The SILLY ONE!
Right? That’s what’s cool about animation and KiDs ShOwS, is you can tackle deep ideas in a seemingly innocent way. See Bluey talking about death, infertility, losing your parents, losing your childhood innocence, failing, holy crap the show on paper is wildly depressing, and yet on screen it’s a delight
I shall continue with book 3: showing torture, deaths onscreen, some rather Sus moments from the beach episode, showing generational trauma, even more child abuse, bloodstained wounds of lightning bad enough to cause a scar and technical seizures, the "I don't need protection" "believe me, she doesn't" moment, and that's only half of the things in that chapter alone. (Quick mention of the wingfeather saga that is rapidly approaching ATLA's level of dark in just the first season even though it's also a kids show)
The trailer looked actually pretty good, but sadly it's all Style over Substance. It Looks like the show, but none of the heart is gonna be in it, because MODERN AUDIENCES and THE MESSAGE, is more important than being faithful to the source material.
I sincerely hope none of the lines on the trailer are on the show, because they sound like something Patrick Bateman would say, not any of the characters. In fact, those lines are on par with the 2010 movie.
Or they are going to leave it out entirely because it needs to be "realistic" plus modern writers tend to hate religious themes these days, either way I can't tell whether removing it or keeping it is going to be worse.
What's the betting odds of them trying to retrocanonize that Rava and Vatu crap into ATLA and completely ignore what ATLA had to say about its own worldbuilding?
@draketheduelist I despise the Rava and Vatu nonsense in LOK. It's so despicably elementary. Come to think of it, I despise LOK in general, minus a few good parts in season 1. But on the whole, LOK just takes a wrecking ball to all the lovely, intricate, deep, and thoughtful worldbuilding that had been accomplished in ATLA. One example: Aang, an airbender, struggled with earthbending, since earth is the natural opposite to air. Roku, a firebender, struggled with waterbending, since water is the natural opposite to fire. The element that is opposite the Avatar's natural element will be his or her most difficult one to master. That is what was established in ATLA. Then along comes LOK to f**k it up for no reason whatsoever. Korra, a waterbender who struggles with airbending? And now, because of this _one_ example-as opposed to the _two_ previously established-we're now supposed to take away that it's always been about the Avatar's _personality?_ F**k off, LOK!
That Doofenshmirtz was REALLY good. I totally forgot about Paku. He's gonna get bastardized. And RIP Katara's arc. I feel like in some ways her arc was learning to NOT be a girl boss. There goes all that growth
Great point about Katara's arc. It was about not giving into revenge just because it feels good in the moment and being the bigger person and letting go. Whereas nowadays her arc could be about how she had all the power and abilities all along and never actually had to grow or change or struggle, just Believe in Herself Enough and her problems would be solved.
Had some hope after One Piece. Then I realized that unlike Oda, the creators of this show wouldn’t be breathing down the necks of the ones running this on Netflix.
@alexman378 you are joking right? I thought the Netflix One Piece was absolutel trash, but then again I lost interest in that series years ago as I respect Oda as much as I Respect George RR Martin, which is not at all. Both are writers who got a following due to great storytelling early on, both have let that "story" continue for way too long with no ending in sight in our lifetimes. Oda says he doesn't even have the ending yet but still has more than 10 years of material to make at the moment, after One piece has been on air for nearly 20 years as an anime, with way more as a manga, it's becomes tedious and imbecilic to dedicate that kind of time to a story you won't ever finish. As a writer, you need to have an ending planned for every story you tell before you even tell it to others, otherwise you aren't a storyteller or even a writer. You're a conman.
I swear to The Lord, it's like everytime we get a GOOD adaptation of something, we just reset and get at least 7 projects that use the property they're supposed to adapt like a skinsuit.
The best part of the Pakku storyline is that he not only agrees to teach Katara, he decides she’s capable of teaching Aang waterbending. He went from not wanting to teach Katara at all to entrusting her with probably the most important job any waterbender can have in just a few days.
I am an original fan of ATLA (fuck I'm old) I watched the series weekly when I was a kid from episode 1 to the end So to see that this live action mess it up just like the movie did... it goes to show you that this series works better animated with the creators
What I love about the fight between Pakku and Katara is how she goes into it knowing that she’s going to loose because it shows that even if she’s not a strong fighter she has a very strong will and determination but that’s too subtle for Netflix to comprehend…
Avatar was deeper than most kids understood which is why parents could enjoy it with their children. It is what good writing is supposed to look like. Complex situations that are shown so both kids and adults can relate to them. Changing the show to be more like Game of Thrones doesn't make it better, it just makes it so your kids can't watch. Good job Netflix.
I think you're right on target with what they're going to do with Katara and Pakku. They'll also take away Iroh's pervy antics, which was used to hide his original intentions from the audience. Heck, they'll probably gender swap Iroh to be the amazing aunt who has no flaws. I lost faith in this show as soon as the writers of the original series walked out on this project years ago.
I think Netflix should just adapt the legend of Korra, that's more inline with their brand, nobody will miss those and there's also character development they can mess up.
Sokkas sexism was part of his character growth as someone who has binged watched the show about 10 times at least Sokka needs that growth and the Netflix People making it clearly have no respect from the source material.
My 5 kids and I rewatch ATLA every summer - 7 years & rewatches later I'm so blown away by the incredible story telling. The characters are like a part of our family and they feel so real. Each rewatch I pick up something new. So glad you've watched this show - rewatch it after a while and see how it gets better. So excited to hear your take on ZuTara Vs Kataang. 😂
Iroh would probably say something like: Look at this river zuko the river flows same as the river of life and so it bends freely uncontrolled to whatever goals it sees, unthill it meets itself and cuts the fresh water off leaving it behind but shall it meet an obstacle like a boulder or a tree It will direct itself forward again so it can flow on. You see, zuko, there's no reason achieve your goals if there's nothing too obstruct you from them.
I was super pumped on this project after the trailer had shot-for-shot recreations. That's on me, really, for thinking even one of these nincompoops would realize that all they have to do is stick to the original IP and... [insert Fry "shut up and take my money" meme]. They're going to ruin this thing. My Mother F**ing Cabbages!!!
I was with you. I was dubious, then the trailer came out and it looked like they really nailed it. Sigh, I gotta quit smoking that Hopium, gets me every time
They are going to give Azula some sort of redemption arc ala Masters of the Universe with Evil Lyn. Also don't be surprised if the Avatar takes a back seat ala Wheel of Time because what Netflix really wants to do is make a Katara show but know they can't do that until they tackle the original first.
Hollywood is also always afraid to show scars. Both Live Action Zuko's need to wash their face, they got pink eye or a rash forming. Zuko's scar is like the equivalent to the cliche Hollywood sexy cry.
I have just finished Avatar on your recommendation, it's amazing, for a 'kids show' it's so much better than so many adult shows and movies I have watched in the last 12 months. The fact that I can remember the characters names says so much as I can't remember names of characters in so many shows recently, mainly because they had no actual character!
I recently decided to write an Avatar fanfic as a writing exercise. It’s very challenging because Avatar was a very good show. If I was making a story for a bad show, it’d be easy because I could just throw out the crap plot and character traits and replace them with whatever I come up with. You can strip a bad story down to its foundation and rebuild it however you want. Creating a story for a good show is much more difficult, at least if you’re trying to do a good job. Since the plot and characters are pretty good, you don’t want to throw anything out without good reason. A fanfic usually starts with a “what if” question. You make a change to the story somewhere, big or small, and describe how that change shifts the story going forward. There are many examples of bad fanfics (shocker, I know) where a change is made, but the story stays on the rails of canon regardless. Why make a change if it doesn’t have any effect? They might as well not have bothered. So any good story should have changes that affect and change the story, so I will have to write new events and scenes that didn’t happen in the show to support those changes, which means I need to understand these characters deeply so whatever actions and words those characters use doesn’t appear out of place or contrary to their nature. I have to go through that effort to create scenes that don’t feel out of place next to the original story. I could take the easy option of just carelessly gouging the story and replacing it with cliches like the writers for the Netflix adaptation clearly have, but then I’d be knowingly creating garbage which isn’t my goal. Seems to be their goal though.
Well Netflix has been financing great shows like Arcane and Blue Eye Samurai so I think the problem is lower down the chain of command than Netflix itself.
Kudos for the Doofensmirtz impression! I have been concerned ever since I saw the report that the original team had left the project over "creative differences." Visually the shows trailers look amazing but it seems like once again the new showrunners know better how to make something that already has hundreds of millions of fans. I still plan to give it a try but expect not to get past episode 1.
It was a major red flag from the onset, when news of the original creators of avatar leaving the show early on. They stated that there were too many things that they disagreed with and when they realized that they were not being heard they decided to leave.
Sakka's sexism isn't even that extreme! And they _literally_ make it a point of him growing out of it over time, its part of his arc! What the heck... :|
Oh they’re making a live action version of blank blank blank…groans ensue, dread spreads leading to disgust & apathy. What a paradigm shift. We used to get excited.
3:20 I totally agree with you, if my books will be adapted to a show, I hope it'll be animated and will have similar animation as this show, it looks amazing.
As someone who did not have expectations for this, I'm prepared to sit back and sip my tea I will say as someone who hates the mindset of 'animation is for kids' in this case they dropped the ball even MORE because the target audience WAS kids, but it was so well written that adults really enjoy it as well. That's the beauty of it, and there's no need to make it more mature to get an adult audience. Also GoT being the worst thing to happen to fantasy television is the truest statement.
Every time I read a producer or showrunner talking about their project being “the next game of thrones” I die a little. It ended so badly, too. It’s like Hollywood is full of red flag lovers, they can fix it this time, lol. You were right to not have expectations. The trailer got me, because it looked good! Now I’m highly dubious
Oh god, I was thinking of watching this with my 3 year old who absolutely loves the original series. If they're going to GoT it there is no way I can do that.
It’s a great story with well written plot, characters, and themes. It should appeal to everyone, except people who are scared of animation for some reason.
Only ever watch a couple episodes of the animated series so I don’t have any background for the original. That being said, the family liked the new version so much that we binge watched all eight episodes in one night. We were pleasantly surprised.
I might be in the minority, but I’m still super hyped for this show. It’s not just the plot, the world building and bending styles are a huge part of avatar for me
Netflix ATLA showrunners- The cartoon on Nickelodeon is simply not mature enough for our target audience. Also Netflix ATLA showrunners - a character learning to overcome his own sexism and biased notions of gender is just too mature of a concept for our target audience. O_o
@@mmakreesekingjr2074 It seems like the type of show I would like, to be honest. I enjoy shows with solid writing, an interesting story, compelling characters, and one that isn’t afraid to take itself seriously when necessary. From what I’ve heard, ATLA achieves all of this.
As I said on another video... remember the episode "Bitter Work"? When Aang is overly excited and asks Toph which awesome move she's going to teach him first, Toph responds, "How about we start with 'move a rock'?" Similarly, when the Netflix showrunners say they want this "remix" series to "appeal to _Game of Thrones_ fans," my immediate response is, "How about you start with 'appeal to _Avatar: The Last Airbender_ fans'?"
Speaking of Netflix, I am so hyped for The Vince Staples Show. Not only is Vince a really solid artist, but the trailer is very reminiscent of the show Atlanta, which I also like.
Awesome video, as always!! And yes, I was so confused why the live-action writers thought to take away a key aspect of Sokka’s growth. Also didn’t the live-action MOVIE of ATLA went with a more serious tone and still NOBODY liked it! Geez, seems like they forgot that comedy is important to the story 😒 However, I would still like to see more of the family dynamic of the water siblings with their parents before the fire nation attacked (lol sorry). It did bother me a little how little Sokka talked about his mom especially since his older one and would still would have had a relationship, even if not a close one like his dad. If the writers hadn’t took away Sokka’s sexist attitudes, it would’ve been used to fill his sexist ideas that women are weaker since his mom was still killed despite having water bending herself.
You should check out Blue Eyed Samurai, its adult animation after Game of Thrones, but is definitely doing its own thing and episode 5 is a masterpiece
Just rewatched. Every time it happens in season 1 and 2 I would say “and the humiliation of Sokka continues”. Season 3, I couldn’t call it out much anymore. Because character growth!
I'm convinced now that the original series was a lucky occurrence. It was just the perfect mix of ideas, medium, support, staff and time period... Big studios with millions more can't replicate it, nor do they understand why it was so popular in the first place... Not even the creators understand it, as it's apparent. But hey! They "adapted" Resident Evil, Cowboy Bebop, the Witcher and Death Note already! It'll be JUST FIIINE amirite??
@@gregowen2022 or how about the entire genre of adult animation? simpsons, south park, rick and morty, futurama, they're all obviously not made for kids, and all are enjoyed by adults. but the creators are probably the type to never give any of those shows a chance.
I heard about this live-action remake just a few days ago. I have no interest in it, I don’t even really know much about it, but it did convince me to go back to the original animated series. I hadn’t watched Avatar since literally its first airing in 2005-2007, back when I was in middle school, but I always had a feeling it would be a show that I’d still end up enjoying years later as an adult. In fact, I thought, I might be able to appreciate it _more_ at this point, since I could pick up on and understand the deeper ideas / themes better than I would’ve as a kid, which of course turned out to be the case. It’s been real great; honestly the worst part about rewatching the series is having to force myself to pace it out. I don’t want to just binge the whole thing in a couple sittings a) because it won’t last and I won’t be able to savor it more, and b) because I know I’ll absorb the details of each episode better if I give time to do so. Each season comes on a ton of CDs, so I’m only watching one CD a day, which comes out to 4-5 episodes each sitting. (I just finished with the Winter Solstice Pt. 2 yesterday, for context as to where I’m currently at.) So I guess a thank you to Netflix for selling me on the old version of the show. Even if they butcher it with their “remake”, at least they’re getting people like me into the classic series again or for the first time.

"people who don't people" That's a good one--not sure if it's a typo but it reminds me of the old cultural meme about "failing at adulting."
Well it's all the more relevant now that people are in a terminally online, prolonged adolescent state. It's not just the field of candidates for any job anymore, it's the hiring committees and HR teams that are full of these "people." Completely senseless and out of touch. To quote a UA-camr I watch, "Animation is a Medium, not a Genre."
It always ticks me off when people say "It's just for kids." While there are some movies and TV shows that are entirely for kids, (cough Trolls cough,), so many of these "kids" movies and TV shows are deeper than most of the adult media I consume. I think that's because kids and family movies aren't afraid to hold back with life lessons. I would much rather watch a "kids" movie that I can learn from and gain understanding from, than a silly light movie made "for adults".
“Animation is a medium, not a genre” is so succinct and perfect!
@@gregowen2022 I agree. I've been quoting it a lot recently after I heard it.
What's even more annoying is how many "for adults" animations are shockingly hollow and often somehow even more immature than the kids stuff
@gregowen2022 animation is for kids.
Thats why my kids only watch hentai.

- Multiple on Screen deaths of characters.
(Quick mention of the wingfeather saga that is rapidly approaching ATLA's level of dark in just the first season even though it's also a kids show)
They never watched the show. All they know about it is via pop culture osmosis, and maybe not even that.
The trailer looked actually pretty good, but sadly it's all Style over Substance. It Looks like the show, but none of the heart is gonna be in it, because MODERN AUDIENCES and THE MESSAGE, is more important than being faithful to the source material.
That’s the worst part is that it LOOKS right. Ugh, at least the original is there, and it’ll always be great
I sincerely hope none of the lines on the trailer are on the show, because they sound like something Patrick Bateman would say, not any of the characters.
In fact, those lines are on par with the 2010 movie.

@@gregowen2022can't wait to see the Nightmare Fuel that is Koh

Yep, I think the shortened time and the showrunner attitude are going to make everyone’s arc essentially the same, and it will be super boring
Yup. Netflix is gonna Netflix. But honestly, who didn't see this coming?
I wanted to believe after that trailer, it really got the look right! Hopium smoking gets me again….
We did cope.
I had cope. No idea why looking back, but i had hopium it would be good
I swear to The Lord, it's like everytime we get a GOOD adaptation of something, we just reset and get at least 7 projects that use the property they're supposed to adapt like a skinsuit.
The best part of the Pakku storyline is that he not only agrees to teach Katara, he decides she’s capable of teaching Aang waterbending. He went from not wanting to teach Katara at all to entrusting her with probably the most important job any waterbender can have in just a few days.
I am an original fan of ATLA (fuck I'm old)
I watched the series weekly when I was a kid from episode 1 to the end
So to see that this live action mess it up just like the movie did... it goes to show you that this series works better animated with the creators
I watched Robotech when it premiered on American TV. Got ya beat lol
What I love about the fight between Pakku and Katara is how she goes into it knowing that she’s going to loose because it shows that even if she’s not a strong fighter she has a very strong will and determination but that’s too subtle for Netflix to comprehend…
Glad to know you are a fellow Phineas and Ferb enjoyer.

"Children are too important to be left to shitty media"- The Little Platoon
Avatar was deeper than most kids understood which is why parents could enjoy it with their children. It is what good writing is supposed to look like. Complex situations that are shown so both kids and adults can relate to them. Changing the show to be more like Game of Thrones doesn't make it better, it just makes it so your kids can't watch. Good job Netflix.
Honestly, the best thing to come out of this show is gonna be E;R's video tearing it to shreds.
Why was his doofenzmirts impression so perfect
It surprised even me!
Sokka's sexism was not just the part of his character growth but ALSO the reason why Katara is so strong and independent woman (non ironically).
I think Netflix should just adapt the legend of Korra, that's more inline with their brand, nobody will miss those and there's also character development they can mess up.
Need more Doofenshmirtz impersonations. That was gold
Who knew I could do Doof? Now it’s definitely in rotation, haha
Sokkas sexism was part of his character growth as someone who has binged watched the show about 10 times at least Sokka needs that growth and the Netflix People making it clearly have no respect from the source material.
Yep, I’m afraid he’s going to be so boring now. Since they want to be so serious, I doubt he’ll have an comic relief either. Just there…. Existing….

What show is that?
They are going to give Azula some sort of redemption arc ala Masters of the Universe with Evil Lyn. Also don't be surprised if the Avatar takes a back seat ala Wheel of Time because what Netflix really wants to do is make a Katara show but know they can't do that until they tackle the original first.
Hollywood is also always afraid to show scars. Both Live Action Zuko's need to wash their face, they got pink eye or a rash forming.
Zuko's scar is like the equivalent to the cliche Hollywood sexy cry.
Yeah, this one looks better than Shamaylan Zuko’s pillow wrinkles, but they need to step it up more. It’s a pretty big deal, they need to get it right
I went on a date with a girl once to go watch the original Lady Airbender movie. It was the last time I saw her. 😂
OMG PLEASE do a review of ATLA. I rewatch this show all the time. Every character is just chef's kiss
My bf is rewatching the series...we just hit tales of ba sing se...i had to leave the room when iroh's story came on because i know im too weak.
It was a major red flag from the onset, when news of the original creators of avatar leaving the show early on. They stated that there were too many things that they disagreed with and when they realized that they were not being heard they decided to leave.
I'm looking forward to hearing Greg Owen talk about A:TLA in depth.

As someone who did not have expectations for this, I'm prepared to sit back and sip my tea
I will say as someone who hates the mindset of 'animation is for kids' in this case they dropped the ball even MORE because the target audience WAS kids, but it was so well written that adults really enjoy it as well.

However, I would still like to see more of the family dynamic of the water siblings with their parents before the fire nation attacked (lol sorry).

Watched episode one and i pulled out the the original avatar out of it's box and started watching it again.
2 yesterday, for context as to where I’m currently at.)
So I guess a thank you to Netflix for selling me on the old version of the show. Even if they butcher it with their “remake”, at least they’re getting people like me into the classic series again or for the first time.
