  • How much can one horse do?? This is our first time attempting to ted hay with just a single horse. Today we take out Bill, our single Belgian horse, and ted some hay. I also do a little mowing with our Percheron team, Ken and Buck, and show you a little mishap we had.
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horses farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    I love that all of your horses are in excellent condition. Thank you on behalf of those with no voice! I have seen so many sad horses that end up at auctions in terrible shape, it makes me smile just looking at your horses. I’m sure your’s are happy! ♥️🙏👍🇺🇸🤓

    Nice tribute to Brenda, Jim. Swath board comment make perfect sense to me but like you said, many have never mowed with a sickle bar mower or even farmed, let alone with horses. I appreciate you're showing what one horse can do, more than one would think. People have to realize, most original horse drawn equipment was designed for "lighter" horses, most teams were hybrids of draft horses and not pure heavy horses. Still, every horse has it's working limits.

    Hey Jim, if you ever have the chance to buy a one handed grease gun, you'll never go back to the type you have with the long handle. I grew up on a farm with the type you have and always hated having to use both hands to operate the grease gun w/ no hand left to hold the nozzle on the grease fitting. The one handed model still uses the same large grease cartridges just like the one you currently have. Great video as always!!

    • @jerrylansbury9558
      @jerrylansbury9558 2 роки тому

      Ive used both types grease guns. Trust me.... when you have fitting that takes lots of pressure to get it to take grease a one hander wont do the job ! Most of mine were difficult to get to take grease. After all....thats the reason for the long handle More force ! Also used the cartridges. Those are a total joke.....and mess ! Used the bucket transfer for years. No cartridge mess. Clean direct to the gun and easy !

    Bill is just a very good horse, that anybody would appreciate. I surely would.
    While this tedder is good for grass hay, it might knock a lot of leaves off if clover is mixed in. Around here, we hardly ever use a tedder, even with a thick stand of hay, because it is so hot during haying time. In Bavaria I never could put up hay without tedding it first, often several times.

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim

    If you are in New Zealand, using Manuka poles (hardwood, quite tight grained and springy) for shafts and tongues may be a good idea. They seem to take the weather really well. My wife is still using an older one for our old-fashioned stick-up washing line stick-up pole.

    Have you ever used the I&J mower? It looks like the cats meow but pretty $$ even using the #9 conversion. What about a ground driven tedder? Something elegant to me about ground driven equipment... I suppose it would require two horses though. I can't do it any more, so it is nice watching someone work horses!

  • @louisecassidy5991

    Sounds a bit like the sort of day you and the horses were lucky to survive, no-one hurt and you seem to stay calm and take it all in your stride. Kinda testy when a horse goes down. I now see that tree down as a warning there was an unseen hazard ahead, so you fell in your ditch! Staunch horse, he wasn't even trembling when you got him all together again. I guess they do have the odd incident, fit and tough enough, they don't seem to get muscle injuries easily. Drive in a post and flag the ditch! Greetings from Australia.

    I attach a short length of lightweight dog chain or rawhide to the pin that goes into the bottom of the hitch pin. That way, it doesn't get lost and is always available and leaves your hands free. I use it on dump carts and rear gates on my carts. Another thing I do is buy a bunch of red or orange reflectors with adhesive backing. I put them on the back and sides of carts and tractors and anything I may take out on the road. They are cheap insurance to make sure other drivers see you. A neighbor was killed years ago backing out of his driveway plowing snow and a kid on a snowmobile didn't see him. They can avoid an accident, are cheap, and easy to put on. All farm equipment that goes out on the highway should have as many as possible. They don't stay on forever however and need to be replaced. I also use them to mark my woods trails with a decking screw with a hole drilled thru.

    I would like to use my team to Ted hay (I have no tedder yet) . If you pull it with a ground drive forecart, is the pull about like a hay rake or does it require more effort? Would I be better off with a Grimm-style tedder? I would rather have the rotary type, if possible.

    Nice job.great to see how well a single can work. How long were you out tedding? I agree with you about safety. My shafts for my forecast are metal that rise up about a foot from the attachment point to make them a bit less angled. I dropped the single tree down to the attachment point level though to keep the line of draft better. I put rubber caps for chairs on the ends of the pipe to protect the horse. I had to have the single tree replaced once after my Belgian mare pulled a 2WD truck up a hill when it was stuck due to a wet field. Great video as always.
