I think the most appealing part of the Symbiotes is that, like Stands from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, any ordinary person can have a symbiote if that person is relatively strong-minded enough. It opens up the opportunity for people to gain superpowers out of the blue, but then reconnect all these people to a bigger plot, like the Knull invasion or Carnage's resurrection while also giving them their own traits that slightly differ from each other.

Also, even when he was said to be the most powerful symbiote, he NEVER was the most powerful symbiote, since there were other FAR more powerful symbiotes like Grendel or even All-Black itself.
