- Bethlehem Down
"When He is King we will give Him a King's gifts,
Myrrh for its sweetness, and gold for a crown,
Beautiful robes", said the young girl to Joseph,
Fair with her first-born on Bethlehem Down.
Bethlehem Down is full of the starlight,
Winds for the spices, and stars for the gold,
Mary for sleep, and for lullaby music,
Songs of a shepherd by Bethlehem fold.
When He is King they will clothe Him in grave-sheets,
Myrrh for embalming, and wood for a crown,
He that lies now in the white arms of Mary,
Sleeping so lightly on Bethlehem Down
Here He has peace and a short while for dreaming,
Close-huddled oxen to keep him from cold,
Mary for love, and for lullaby music,
Songs of a shepherd by Bethlehem Down.
Music - Peter Warlock

Christmas Eve, 1927
My all time favourite Christmas song. Made by a non Christian... Absolutely honest. We just celebrate Christmas to get something for ourselves. When we're honest we go to the cradle of Christ only offering him wood to be crucified and myhr to be put in the grave. You might bring nails to crucifie Him. It's our deeds we bring. And for our sinfull deeds He came, was born, taught, and was crucified. Not for a merry Christmas but to save our souls from hell. Sure payment for our sins. Shalom to you.
good singers, good music, good venue, and good singing. beautiful story. sad about the demise warlock. so much potential.
Had never been to London before 1987. Went to St. Paul's Cathedral during a rehearsal of this; first time I ever heard it. Made and still makes my heart thump and skip...TX so much...
Dear God in Heaven, you are a wonderful choir. I could never get through a performance of this piece, though.
Wow, thank you Ann!
Absolutely beautiful. I have.a Christmas CD called Christmas Poliphony with this choral piece sung by a choir in Canada. One of my favourite Christmas choral works.
Thanks so much Karen!
How gorgeous!

That just sends shivers down my spine - chilling, uplifting and glorious all at the same time!

Very beautiful!
Thank you Valerie!
Oh, my goodness, you so beautifully captured the mood of this piece! Thank you for your beautiful work.
I'll have the privilege of singing this with our parish choir on December 10, 2016 for Lessons and Carols at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart here in Richmond, Virginia. Sidenote: I have had to practice this a lot so that I don't break down during the third verse. A blessed Advent season and a most Merry Christmas to all of you.
Thank you so much Will, we're really pleased you enjoyed it! We hope your Lessons and Carols go well tomorrow. If you're a Facebook person, do like our page (facebook.com/SiglodeOro) and be the first to hear our next set of videos... SdO

Amazing control and feeling. Wonderful example of how to interpret this lovely piece of music. Thank you. 🙂
Thank you for your kind words, Dave!
Beautiful stuff.
Loved It -"Diolch yn fawr"
So pleased! Croeso!
Deeply moving and perfectly performed. Thank you.
Ethereal beauty
The saddest and most beautiful Christmas song ever, written by two guys who tried to make some money to get themselves drunk. Kind of paradoxical.
Nice choir, beautiful sound! Would love to sing in a choir like yours! Keep it up.
That's very kind, thanks David - we will try!
As I singer I also love your pure and professional sound!

Just gorgeous! Thank you for posting. How I'd love to be part of making a sound like that!
Thank you - we're very pleased you enjoyed it!
Words all seem correct to the text given in the comment, except the very last word is "fold" as in v. 2, as i recall (plus it rhymes!).
I wonder why Blunt says "they" in v3? Shouldn't it be "we"? Even to the point of E. A. Robinson's anguished question in "Calvary"?
Beautiful performance of this wonderful, profound work. Have you recorded it?
Thank you ever so much! Not yet...
Where are you based? Amazing singing, brilliant camera-work and editing. Love it!
Thanks so much George! We're based in London - more info on our website: siglodeoro.co.uk. Video is made by a company called Apple and Biscuit.
THey are Brits, of course. No one sings better than their choirs and choruses.
