The story about the guy not seeing the point of getting a diagnosis if it's not affecting anything. I wonder if they just don't realize how high there are high masking af.
I thought the same for me, like surely I wouldn't if I "made it" 30 years without a diagnosis.
What I didn't realize util my diagnosis was just much I was masking, and how what I thought was "normal" wasn't something "normal" at all. Such as being at my sensory limit 24/7 and just having to suppress and have a mini breakdown at home in private. I thought that EVERYONE did that.
I wonder if that guy's life would be easier if their (supposed) autism is accommodated for.

i totally agree! i wasn't diagnosed super late in life, but i've definitely noticed myself masking less now that i know. i'm able to stim more which is awesome because before i wouldn't let myself or didn't recognize things as stims. it's honestly been great for mental health!

Autism might be causing him more issues than he knows. Maybe that is part of the reason why his wife is pushing him to get a diagnosis. Also even if he is doing fine now he might hit an autistic burnout later.🤷

“my parents don’t want me to be treated differently”
there is definitely a generational divide on the issue of whether to be out about autism. You’re going to get treated differently anyway, might as well do yourself a favor and use whatever institutional protection exists to mitigate scenarios where you might be broadly misinterpreted, unfairly judged, fired from a job, or affected by malignant ignorance in any number of other ways…

Although, if she thinks he has it, she already has enough info to prepare for it, regardless of diagnosis. A positive diagnosis won’t guarantee that the child will have autism. If the child does show signs, it will be clear soon enough if the guy does have autism, as often happens with adult diagnosis.
