  • In today's video, we discuss HOW TO GROW KOHLERIA, a Gesneriad genus, similar to other popular Gesneriads such as Stretocarpus and African Violets.
    I show you my 2 Kohleria plants -- one of which is in full bloom, and we go through all of its care needs from watering, light, humidity, to potting media, over-wintering and so on.
    I hope you enjoy it!

    A sweater in July? 🤔
    Beautiful Streps and Kohleria. As far as peat alternatives for growing them, I find that AV's flourish in a mix of coco coir and perlite, I mix it about 3 parts coir to 1 part perlite. The advantage to the coir is that it breaks down/compacts much slower than peat and doesn't hold nutrients (every time you water, you're flushing out any excess). Coir is also exceptional for a self watering setup because of it's wicking properties.

    • @Grow_Up_Man55

      Yeah Michael the weather has been awful for the last 5 weeks - rain, wind, more rain, more wind...Not good for a jobbing gardener like me! I'll definitely give that mix a try. I wonder if it'll work for carnivorous plants too? I'm getting more and more uneasy about using peat now that I've researched it somewhat.

      @@Grow_Up_Man55 it is the opposite here. It should be raining every day and we haven't had any rain to speak of in three weeks and it has been brutally hot. I don't mind the heat but, even for me, it is too hot.
      If you give the coir a try, you may need to experiment with the perlite ratio to suit your growing environment but I have no doubt it will work out for you.

      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 роки тому

      We need to do a weather exchange! I've been looking into the coir a bit more, and it looks like I'll be able to use it for carnivorous plants too. Redleaf Exotics (from your neck of the woods) told me they use it with Nepenthes. Thanks for the tip!

    Kohleria, looks interesting. I might have to give it a try. I haven't quite organised my greenhouse the way I want it but I am getting there slowly. Where did you get your door cover for your partition? And are you still happy with it? Some of my Catts get 4-5 hours under the LEDs every morning. I had to pick my hubby up at the train station, we were driving past the barber's and he suddenly shouts out, "There's no queue at the barber's!" I had to let him out. Men and their haircuts!

      It's been a really great purchase, and I'd get another straight away if it wore out. Yeah hair combing is just an inconvenience I can do without...😂

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 роки тому +1

      They're very pretty aren't they? Shipping costs are pretty good from the UK - Dibley's are charging $4.80 to EU countries but I don't think they're allowed to post outside of there.

      Tropical Plants at 53 Degrees yes I was just looking at what is out there to order and shipping is $10.00 for a starter plant or one rhizome for $6.00 plus shipping 😞

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 роки тому

      The rhizomes are tiny things so shouldn't cost too much. It cost me a total of £7 for one Kohleria rhizome plus shipping - which I think is pretty good value. Each rhizome is £3.50. Hope you manage to get what you're looking for!

    I bought a kohleria 'Brazil gem' and an achimenes 'little beauty' last month and they are racing away. I did buy them as young plants and I have already taken a cutting from the achimenes to encourage it to bush up. Do you have any achimenes? I have grown them in the past but am restricted how many I can grow indoors!

    • @Grow_Up_Man55
      @Grow_Up_Man55  4 роки тому

      Yeah I saw them on Dibley's but didn't get any. There are so many lovely tropical plants to buy and too little space! I've just had another look and they certainly do look like great plants. At first glance though it looks like they'd completely die down over winter which isn't something I want. Unless the info I read was incorrect.

      Este greu să ajut când nu știu condițiile tale. A inflorit deja? Ele intră în repaus după înflorire. Poate că tranzitul a fost cel care l-a doborât înapoi? Doar dă-i multă lumină și doar apă când s-a uscat din nou.
