  • The challenge of climate change needs urgent attention, and nuclear energy is a major and established asset in the fight against it. We are tasked to limit global warming to 1.5°C, as set in the Paris Agreement. This massive task needs strong, immediate and collective effort. Across the globe all efforts are made to utilise the available carbon-free technologies to decarbonize the economy. Nuclear power has been an established technology and is sustainable, carbon-free and reliable energy source and has helped respond to climate change by offsetting close to 55 Gt of CO2 emissions over the past 50 years (equivalent to 2 years of global CO2 emissions in energy sector). While carbon dioxide emissions related to energy continue to rise - reaching 33.1 billion tonnes in 2018, a record high, and have increased by more than 40% since 2000.
Note: This presentation is to understand the working of nuclear technologies and plausibility of achieving net zero neutrality with its help, as an academic exercise.
