Doom Retro Battles involves several Doom and Doom 2 battles, a fight club or battle simulator of sorts, between various units and unit compositions, each with different variations such as weapons, numbers, difficulty levels like Ultra-Violence and Nightmare, etc.

On average with Ultra-Violence, the shotgunners kill more shotgunners than the Spider Mastermind does.
Don't fear Masterminds.
Don't underestimate Sergeants.

The mastermind is merely alone and has a huge stunrate, hence it's being downed so quick, but it's nothing more than a very beefy chaingunner.
@@jaymxu Oh damn it, I wish 15 year old me had thought of it that way! Now I REALLY don't know why I was ever intimidated by the SMM, I'd basically been fighting them with 10% of their HP all through the game. I wish I thought of that so long ago!
@@jaymxu It's actually even worse than that. The actual chaingunner can just start firing any old time with no warning, but the mastermind has to stop and look at its target for like a full second before it can start shooting, so that's why in the first couple fights, all of the shotgunners that died probably only died at all from friendly fire. Shotgun spam is likely to cause flinching due to the huge number of pellets, and the super shotgun fires so many it can even flinch the cyberdemon semi-regularly. The mastermind stood no chance.

They can't, because hitscan. If they fired projectiles, it could happen.

On UV, half of the sergeants die BEFORE the big spider starts shooting. 🤣

On ALL these vids the team of "weaker" enemies do worse on UV than on Nightmare..it must have to do with AI "rangefinding"..and being able to "see" a target without having to walk towards it, and get in your buddies way.....In the last two fights, 3/4 of the Sergeants were dead within 3 seconds...by their own idiot hands!

I want to see a mod with all hit scanners using rockets. One rocket for the zombie man, 3 for the shot gunner and full auto for the chain gunners.
Since it has vertical spread as well, a good chunk of pellets would go to the sky or ground unless really close. On doomguy bot duels the ones with normal shotguns often did better than the ones with superSS on nightmare, since they never managed to close the gap.

In her defense, she's so damn big that the shotgun does miss any of the pellets.
It's her pain chance that's her biggest weakness. There are ways to buff her without completely changing her play style

I wouldn't even say the pain chance. It's the warmup before firing rhat takes way too long. I've reduced its frame length to 10 or so frames, increased her cannon's fire rate to match our chaingun, and now she's a _menace._

I've never played doom. Weird I know, but I HAVE played Quake 2 and the shotgun, and super shotgun are beasts, even the grunts who use them are OP.
That said, I hope you get quake 2 and download infighter mod. Would be fun to see tournaments between enemies.

I love how in the first round the Spider only actually killed like 6 shotgunners, and they killed the other 23 of each other while the lone guy finished the Spider. Lol

I can't believe I was ever afraid of this boss. Good God. This would be even more of a rout if the shotgunners couldn't damage each other. (Infighting is disabled but that just means they won't turn around and retaliate, not that they can't damage each other at all.)
On paper, 5v1000 looks like it'd just be a 100% rout for the Shotgunners, but then you figure 90% of them are dead by their own hands in the first ten seconds...
Spidey should have a pain chance similar to the Cyberdemon. Maybe even less chance, seeing as how its supposed to be the final boss of the original. Id bet many of these battles would be a lot different if that were the case.
Definitely. The first round it barely killed any of them. They mostly died from infighting. If it actually got a chance to shoot it'd be a lot different.

Would you try using the Brutal mod? the SM is very deadly on that one since she has an explosive chaingun
THIS! Although GG did reply on a recent video (one with Wolfenstein SSs) that they're doing it as vanilla as possible; I would definitely like to see the Brutal Doom take on these challenges, as none in the bestiary are pushovers and have additional quirks over their regular counterparts.

Also, too close between SMMs, would took lot of damage from friendly fire.
At final parts, I guess 80-90% of shotgun guys were dead by friendly fire from behind.

The Spider MM's programmed behavior make him 'flinch' a lot more than other monsters, so whenever one gets hit, they hesitate for over a second. Then they seem to be programmed to take at least one or two steps to re-orient themselves before they start shooting. And they don't do sustained fire either, they just do a couple seconds of shooting, then whether they're being hit or not, they'll walk around for another couple seconds to reposition themselves. So the MM's are not very well suited for these kinds of match-ups, especially just one. Being hit from all quarters, they'll spend more time flinching and stepping than actually shooting, making them almost easy prey for large groups. If they reprogrammed the MM's so they react more quickly, they'd be a lot more dangerous.

Out of curiosity, how much HP did the surviving Mastermind have in the Nightmare 5v80 match?
I don't track HP for more than 3 enemies because it becomes too much of a hassle to setup individual TIDs and have everyone attacking each other properly.
@@GGRetroBattlesI don't know if this would he applicable, but in GZDoom, you can use the command "info" on whatever creature you're looking at, and then scroll up in the command console to find that creature's current health

Both sides suffer from friendly fire, the shotgunners can actually exploit that against the spider mastermind’s as they can go behind one and have another spider mastermind on the opposite side shoot at those shotgunners which results in the spider mastermind getting peppered.

Id software is a brilliant game company but every now and then they make a choice that's a real head scratcher.
Like giving a boss a 1/8 flinch chance.
They should have made the spidermastermind with 0% pain chance. Then it would've been a much more formidable boss in the game.

These showings have been pretty embarrassing, but one factor they don't account for is that Doom Guy moves so much faster than the monsters and can dodge a lot of attacks as opposed to just anking things like the monsters do. This puts hitscanners, and Revenants at a disadvantage as far as representing their relative threat to the PC. The Mancubus is skow to fire, and out maneuver, but does comparitively well in a slug fest. The SM has an advantage over say the Cyberdemon, in that their attacks can not be dodged. Its supposed to be a "super chaingun", but I dont really see the difference.

spider has too high pain chance and takes too long to select a target. it actually does better vs boss monsters where it can lock on and keep its enemy locked with pain.
