My twins are 25yo, I have been a full time mom and full time tutor for 14 years. I thank teachers who have taught my sons and I have kept in touch with some of them. My older twin won the Lee Kuan Yew gold medal for Aerospace Engineering in NTU. I have managed to thank some of his teachers. Incidentally, I did my A levels in Malaysia. Students and parents in Singapore may or may not know how blessed they are!!!!!
Singapore is very lucky to have such Minister. How many times do you see such a down-to-earth Minister in the world articulating policies with such depth and breath without reading from scripts? It is very obvious that this Minister cares a lot for the well-being of his teachers and Singapore children and his approach to parenting and educating a child is wise and sound. And he puts his intelligence and beliefs into implementing something which will continue to put Singapore in the forefront of education.
I think this is a right move. I have frequently heard from students that "you are paid to teach me, we pay school fees to attend lessons" to their teachers. I am glad that the minister is addressing this issue. I hope that he can further evaluate the use of feedback in higher education as such feedback sessions has been used unresponsibly as an weapon against teachers.
There are still many level-headed people in Sg. As long as what he said makes sense and is for the well-being of everyone, he may win more votes for being frank and direct in addressing problems before they get worse.
I just shared I had a wonderful pri 1 teacher Mrs Foo fr Redhill 35 yrs ago. She reminded me to go on time to the tuckshop for a cup of milk. Reason I was too skinny. Tk wanting me to stay healthy
The elephant in the room is often NOT the parents but the principals that set their school culture and burden teachers with many after school hours text about “urgent” work. I think minister needs to know that.
The teachers should also be treated with respect by the schools and should not overtax them with lots of work and messaging about work matters after school hours.
Some highlights: - Parents who escalate school issues unnecessarily and overstep boundaries with teachers are a minority, but they waste time and divert resources away from the wider school community - Bypassing the school's leadership, and instead getting a minister to bring pressure on the school, is something that Mr Chan said he "cannot tolerate" - "I trust my principals, I trust my teachers. I always tell them that I'm not going to respond to this, because the more I respond to this, the more emboldened that individual will be to bypass (the system)" - Mr Chan said that perhaps now parents have a "natural tendency" to want to do more for their children, whereas in the past, parents "generally trust the teachers more". - He added: "Today, I think a lot of people feel that, 'Well, I'm also highly educated, then I should have a view on certain things.'" "Sometimes in trying to solve every problem for them, we actually deprive them of that learning opportunity." - Beyond creating entitled children or parents, he said such a mindset would have serious implications for the teaching profession. - if parents keep bailing their children out of situations, such as asking for a spelling list on their behalf or to review their PSLE scores, children will not be encouraged to be responsible or learn life skills. I have tried to contact school leadership, to no avail. I am unable to trust a system which does not even share the output of exams. Do not complain, do not ask any questions, do not have an opinion, keep yourself away.
They have 1 welfare officer in schools now.. not sure how many schools sharing 1 welfare officer. The welfare officer will work with the social workers in the nearest family service centre to support the students and/or families that need help.
@@daphneteo599 Eventually i want stronger laws and policies to safeguard teachers, we owe them that much for bringing up the nation after all. I don't want us to have a educational situation like South Korea and Japan
The cause of such parental behaviours maybe due to the Grandparents who had brought yp the Parents this way. Unfortunately this small group of parents unable to relearn fast and get out.
A feedback i wrote to Moe regarding the psle syllabus till now its not addressed, its getting tougher n weighing down on our students, teachers n parents. With AL 1-6 etc. Do u think it's healthy for the students mentally especially n to teachers n parents too to set a high standard especially for maths, science, English with so many components? Y is moe syllabus stressing the sg students too much? Y no reply till now? Y sg education is so stressful?
education is stressful bcos all the parents wants their children to get full marks (or close to it). exmas and tests are meant to stratify which students are good and not so good in a subject. If every student gets >80%, the exam/test is meaningless. Hard questions are meant to seek out the truly high calibre students in the subject, they are not meant for everyone to score correctly
The irony is that these ‘knowledge’ like advanced mathematics are useless in the real world, unless you want to be a scientist - but that can be learnt later on. Even in my era, we have exams questions that are so hard that students broke down after the exams. These students are likely to be then streamed into classes that are deemed to be for students that are less intelligent. All these have long lasting effects on the students especially on their confidence. Don’t bang on getting a reply from the minister or minister. They are all elitist who came from the same system, they group think and they seriously think they know best.
You have answered your own question actually. Parents are one of those who set too high a standard and thus leading to stress for the children. Can parents start the ball rolling by not setting too high a standard?
Perhaps you represented a small minority . So many parents are okay with PSLE system etc . Unless you make a strong case with a few hundred Thousands of signatures .. it’s no go.
yes, and thats is why people who can afford goes for tuition or more expensive enhancements. Because we cannot count on teachers to provide that services.

A bold and honest Min Chan. He speaks the truth and helps us change.

a v good interview
the minister is v frank and he wants to do the right things and not popular
he admits he will lose votes

it is not easy to insist being right and not popular that should be way forward

I feel social workers should be attached to schools as well, much like hospitals

I think the question is not "why now", but "why not earlier"?? This has been the prevalent trend over past 7 years or so.
Without the unreasonable earlier incidents, will there be the rule/regulation/law now?
