"Go Straight" is Detroit techno, and it's also kind of the Megadrive anthem Listening to this music on a Megadrive in 1992... really brought electronic music to us kids who played videogames at the time. Yamaha, who created the Megadrive sound chip, came out and said that with this game they didn't even think their sound chip would sound so good.
That Idaten comparison was pretty damn cool. All these years that I've listened to these legendary songs and I have never thought of that! Just another reason why I love your content man!
@@DragonofDarkness13 Fair enough I guess but I’m baffled. Easily my favourite song on the soundtrack and one of my favourite video game songs of all time.
Having gone from Intellivision to NES to Genesis, the Genesis audio was absolutely unbelievable when we first heard it. And hearing SoR1 for the first time was an absolute marvel. SoR 2 just turned it up to even another level. The use of stereo audio while not a new thing, was not that common in video games to the level Yuzo Koshiro did in those games. The Genesis had by far the best soundchip from that era, it just took effort to turn out the absolute top of the line music it could have.
Memories of staying over at my cousin's house and playing the Genesis all night. Getting to the last stage and running out of continues, starting over again... The nostalgia is real. Edit: Congrats on the milestone bro, you've far beyond spoiled us with this wonderful channel :D
I swear, it's always an experience with a cousin when it comes to SOR2. I literally went through the same thing, except he brought it over to my place.
Congrats on 1500! Go Straight is an instant bop, maybe my favorite song on the entire Genesis. It gets remixed a lot, and I've heard it used as background music in tons of videos over the years.
Congrats -- and here's to 1,500 more! It was super fun seeing you comparing it to the Shinobi soundtrack, I never noticed that! Though I guess it tracks, considering both were composed by Yuzo Koshiro
The music in Streets Of Rage 1 and 2 was extremely heavily based on real actual dance club music. Yuzo Koshiro would actually Live DJ extended jam session versions of these songs at actual nightclub venues and later at a few gaming conventions.
I knew Go Straight but Never Leave Alive was fresh to me and daaaaaaamn. Crazy banger, I always have loved when composers and producers use sirens and alarms as intruments for music, it's so dope.
OMG the piano in Go Straight is reminding me so much of like the 90's Eurodance songs (dont judge me!) like No Mercy - Where Do You Go, Amber - This Is Your Night, Ace Of Base - Beautiful Life, Haddaway - What is Love. uuuugh there is one specific song that piano line is making me think of but i cant remember what it is and its going to drive me nuts!! i will spend hours looking for it >
You asked about decades. Streets of Rage came out in 1991/1992, and it sounds appropriately "between-decades." It has distinct house/techno/hiphop vibes from that era. Check out Inner City's classic track "Good Life" (1988) for an obvious reference.
What a coincidence, I was just listening to Yuzo Kushiro & Motohiro Kawashima live concert of Streets of Rage + Shinobi. These tracks are so great! I am not really a fan of Street of Rage, but the ost is something that always comes to mind when I think of retro game music. Yuzo Kushiro has also done work for the arcade racing game Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series.
Congrats on 1500 Jesse! Streets of Rage 2's soundtrack is amazing! I hope you also have a request for dreamer. As a kid I used to get to the level where dreamer plays and just stop playing to listen to the music for a few loops.
I grew up with Beat 'em ups, specifically double dragon II on NES. I remember wanting this game after playing it at a friend's house. And the music fit so well. Never really got to play it until years later on Xbox arcade. Also the 2nd song sounds like Hugo's stage in 3rd strike.
When I was a kid I got my Genesis with this game and Bio Hazard Battle. It was used and didn't have a video cable, but I would plug headphones into the port on the front and just listen to the music. Both games have amazing soundtracks so my imagination went crazy with what would be on the screen. Luckily a few weeks later when I finally found a video cable (couldn't easily find one online back then) I was super impressed with both games!
While working at gamestop, a customer came in asking if we bought retro games and I said no, but I asked what he had. Streets of rage 1 and 2 and Ecco the dolphin in the box with the instruction manual. Gamestop would have bought it for 10 dollars, I picked them up from him for 20. Best idea I ever had
The Streets of Rage series is one of my all time favorites. 2 was always my favorite, but 4 that came out just a few years back I think is on the same level. Great music all around. I believe Tee Lopes helped with music for the 4th iteration.
'Never Return Alive' is the boss theme, so you're right, the siren-esque warning noise is implying danger! It's actually a remix of the SoR1 boss theme, and the final boss theme for both games is also a remix of it :)
Yuzo Koshiro is a genius. He created specific driver and settings to create this like electro FM pump. Also, you can find PC-88 versions of Dreamer created in unique structure of YM2608 chip.
If I remember correctly, Streets of Rage had 3 games on the Megadrive/Genesis... I have a weird feeling that there might have been an attempt to revive the series in 3D at some point, but I can't clearly picture anything... Maybe I'm getting confused with Final Fight Streetwise lol... But yeah, it feels like one of those games that might have gotten a bad 3D game on the PS2 or original Xbox or something... I could look it up to check, but I can't be bothered right now lol. I forget exactly when Streets of Rage 4 came out... I feel like it was late PS3/XBox360 or during the PS4/Xbone era... I remember some oldschool fans quite liking it... If I remember correctly, it was like one of those HD retro remakes and you could unlock a bunch of characters, I think including versions of some of the characters from the original three games or whatever (there may have been some kind of actual HD remake of one of the earlier games a little while before... Maybe I'm thinking of a fan project) ... I've been meaning to play 4... I forget if I bought the game yet or not... I'll have to doublecheck that later... This music does give somewhat early 90s, European (weirdly, especially in their earlier days, Sega do seem to feel pretty European to me in some ways... I wonder if it's why I think they were more popular in Europe... Or did they help set the trends in Europe? I don't know) , dance club vibes... House, techno, maybe Jungle music kinda stuff... I don't think Hip Hop as much, but I suppose they probably all kinda make use of similar stuff, like having a DJ element and working with samples etc... There are elements there... These things tend to develop over time, so often there's crossover at the very beginning and end of a decade... I feel like mid to late decade tends to define a decade more, but it might depend... I'm not sure... I find it's still often not too hard to guess between early, mid or late within a decade if you give it a bit of study after... It's like a lot of trends, they're not as easy to interpret until you have a bigger picture... Probably why it can be so hard for people to stay ahead of it all...
There were 3 SoRs for Genesis. 4 was made by French game studio and released in 2020, gameplay-wise it just expanded what previous games have but with much bigger roster. 3D SoR was announced at Game Awards 2023, looked meh tbh.
I've always been amazed at the difference between composers who could use the Genesis sound chip, and those who could use it well. It was really easy to make it sound completely awful.
The composers for Streets Of Rage 2 are Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima, and both of them made music for the Shinobi series.
Correct, except the track Jesse played was from Shinobi III, and they didn't work on that one.
"Go Straight" is Detroit techno, and it's also kind of the Megadrive anthem

The entire OST for Streets of Rage 2 is a banger. Slow Moon, Expander, Dreamer, & Alien Power are some must listens from this OST
For sure, also Wave 131 & Under Logic.
I second this. Keep the Groovin and Moon Beach from 1 are also good.
@@jordandeadley360 I don't care for Wave 131 myself , but I definitely agree as I can see it's appeal for others
I've always slightly prefered Streets of Rage 1's soundtrack

@JessesAuditorium I think you're right! mb

Streets of Rage 3 also has some fun soundtracks!!!
My recommendations i think ya would like:
Happy Paradise
Poets II, Moon & Poets I (in that order

Omg I've been asking for these two songs for three years now. Omg omg omg. Yes. I'm so happy you showcased these.
Three years?

Congrats on 1,500 Jesse! Crazy that you did SoR2 today cuz I was playing SoR4 while watching your first Octopath stream tonight lol
Yuzo Koshiro is such an amazing composer. Really underrated in the grand scheme imho.

Go Straight is inspired by the song Good Life by Inner City
Gotta say, for some reason Never Return Alive's siren section reminds me of House of Pain - Jump Around.

SOR2 is the best game OST of all time imo.
Here's to 2,000 🥂
SoR 1 and 2 both have great OSTs. Hope you don't stop here.
Yuzo Koshiro is a genius. He created specific driver and settings to create this like electro FM pump. Also, you can find PC-88 versions of Dreamer created in unique structure of YM2608 chip.
The never return alive music is the boss fight music
You mentioned that the second track sounds like it has sirens in it; that is def on purpose. Two of the main characters you play as are cops.
Oooh another good SoR2 song is Dreamer
Well I never play this game in it's entirety (Street of Rage 2) but I did enjoy the soundtrack to this game. 😊👍
