The Malaysian government rejected their participation in the festival in June. Then his manager wrote a letter to the organisers that they promise to abide with the guidelines, rules and regulations. So, it means he (Matty Healy) knew what was going on. Yet, he decided to do EXACTLY the opposite of what they had promised. The 1975 should be sued for this for what economic and financial impact it had on everyone involved. Not only that he made things worse for the LGBT community. Because of him, the community is now being equated with barbarianism, savagery and degeneracy -- by appearing intoxicated on stage with a bottle of wine in his hands, pushed and kicked the cameraman, spat onto the crowds, vomited on stage and DESTROYED THE CONCERT DRONES!

I'm a huge the 1975 fan. I was there that night. I LOVED every song they performed (before the organisers pulled the plug of course). But what he did was selfish.
Yes, he's advocating human rights. I'm all for it. But as someone living in a country where those things are restricted to a certain point. We just don't bother to cross that line because it'll backfire.
Now, because of what happened. This will affect future artistes in coming to Malaysia. There will be stricter rules, the authorities will get involved and all of those shit.
We've seen how it affected Good Vibes Festival. The artists that flew from different countries and arrived in Malaysia only to find out the festival has been cancelled. The ticket buyers of course, the vendors, the fans. And most importantly, the LGBTQ community in Malaysia are gonna get a whole lot of backlash after this.
It was reckless behaviour from Matty. Why can't he just say some stuff (less offensive), sing the songs, give the fans a great time, get paid handsomely and go back home.
I love the 1975, i really do. They've helped me go through some tough times in my life. I was so looking forward to see them. The feelings I had getting to see them live right in front of my eyes was a dream come true. But that dream was cut short. It hurts, it just hurts.

Oh wow, I fully did not expect you to cover this news. 😲😲😲
I bought 3 one-day tickets for this festival, so I (and my sisters) could watch The Strokes for the very first time. And I wasn't the only one who was excited about this. Many of us Malaysians absolutely adored them since the 2000s.
But because of this incident, the entire festival was cancelled. One IG user said he saw Albert and Nick just arrived at our airport! So The Strokes did came here yesterday but for nothing.
It sucks so much as a fan(s). It's not easy to get international acts like them, Guns & Roses (which they came but I didn't get to see 😭), Coldplay (which is coming soon but due to scalpers, they were sold out in less than 2 days 😵) and many more.
I can't say for others but despite our laws against LGBT acts, I am still tolerant towards them. Much like I can still tolerate others to follow their beliefs and even eat & drink whatever they please, but within limits based on human decency. It comes down to this: One can do one's own thing, one can love anyone, one can be freely speak and act, as long as it isn't harmful to self or others, forcing on self or others, and it isn't extreme and still within the rules.
Or in a shorter say: "Go do your thing but please, leave me out of it. And take care, okay?"
It's all about being respectful to each other's boundaries, and Matty boy here wasn't give any. And it definitely only make it worse for the LGBT community here to be more accepted.
Anyway, thanks Matty for ruining things. And my God, Matty. This is supposed to be Good Vibes Fest, not a Bad Mood Fest. Good grief.
But truly thanks to Jon for covering this. If you ever decided to go on a summer/winter honeymoon/vacation in Malaysia, go to Perhentian Island or Redang Island. Beautiful beach and nice underwater view.

You go to someone's house and their rules don't make you comfortable do you throw tantrums, get drunk , spit on them then destroy their furniture and openly and aggressively raise your voice about their rules that they had told you before you visit their house? That's exactly what he did. It's very simple. It wasn't like he was being horribly treated or discriminated. He acted like a toddler throwing a tantrum when something is in his way and people are enabling him. The whole issue may not even be about LGBTQ but basic manners and respectful behavior. I wish people could have the intelligence to understand that advocating for a cause doesn't mean aggression and that different cultures/groups have different ways of handling their problems. He was narcissistic, selfish and self-aggrandizing. That's the main issue Malaysians dislike. What's really backward is the inability to understand each other and be respectful of our differences. Please be observant enough and aware enough to know when is someone using a cause for their gain or gains for certain groups or people by pretending they are standing up for you or they really care about any of you. If they really did, they'd have to be very careful about their decisions. It looks to me this guy is all about himself and is feeding off the enablers.
Beware of saviours who'd push your buttons to make chaos under the pretense of 'changing the world's because that's what's happening on a large scale now. Unresolved traumas and pain are being used to feed off negativity. Beware.

Hello, I am a Malaysian and the issue for the band The 1975 is due to our Malaysian culture as a whole. I support LGBTQ in my country and with Matt Healy stunt he basically doomed the Malaysian LGBTQ community since the government is super duper strict. The stunt may seemed like empowerment but it wasn't. I hope there is more coverage as the main topic is basically to 'respect a country's rules, regulations and culture'.

I will NOT see my favourite musicians reduced to the level of poodles, by a manipulative little corporal (there, I’ve said it!)
Totally out of order - disrespectful to the host country, to his band mates (these guys have NEVER fallen out), to an audience of teenage daddies girls - bless them - & the culture that raised them…& most of all, to the Gay Community! the powerful option was always open - to simply leave!
‘Just a kiss?’…staged, & I fear for anyone who Matty Healy decides to ‘love’ -like you love a poodle, a pet, you mean?
I have laughed & cried with the beauty of their Art…but I’m sad because…how am I ever again gonna associate the 1975 with A Good Time
Months left of the tour, & after the ball is over…? Matty’s OK - he can work the ‘incident’ into every single show - ‘I’m a pop star…rise up & follow ME!’
    I could STRANGLE him 💔

    Honestly....just why.
TLDR: Matty is selfish and makes everything worse for people who are not him.
He has done this before (as he says himself in his little "speech") and everyone was pissed then and told him why it wasn't a good idea. It sucks for the fans in Malaysia and all other artists coming there/ and to the festival. It's honestly already bad enough for performers in countries that are less free because they will always be under a lot of scrutiny.... I think that Matty is not even well intentioned but a selfish man who does not care about his or his band's reputation nor about his fans. He wants to do what he wants every day of his life and play shows to people who readily adore him and would defend his every move. BUT times are changing, fans are not putting him on a pedestal anymore and in general sometimes you need to endure temporary discomfort for the greater good. He could' ve gone to instagram after the festival was over and just generally talked about supporting the LGBTQIA audience in countries like Malaysia but he didn't, he just made all of it about himself. While he doesn't deserve to be cancelled over this, his general selfishness ist hard to watch as a casual fan of 'The 1975' as a whole band, and I agree that it becomes increasingly hard to call yourself that😅

I don't like all their music or everything Matt does but It's amazing how long the 1975 have been able to stick around. Other indie pop bands from that era like the neighbourhood that lost all the hype

As a Malaysian, and even looking at this situation as a not familiar with The 1975 music even with knowing Matty Healy on a few occasion
I can't decide on which do I choose here but I will say tho... Look, the government and rule in this country especially other countries who are with religion that doesn't or not at all being kind to LGBT, aren't ever gonna change
Especially if they have like very stricted towards civilian who unfortunately get the punishment for not setting up the rule right for them in a country
But Matty action here? Like I get it, trying to speech up and made things greater for all to be heard but that leaves things worse for everyone like... Yes, you're bring up a good point, but that doesn't at all helping or made anything better unfortunately. Not that the country gonna care for it anyway
To matty action and to everyone at this concert, it should never happened. Not that it should've cancelled but maybe let this run by w/o sparking up a chaos
But he was drunk and did it anyway EVEN if he already knew so..? Idk how you would do this anyway even setting up the name of the frontman of the band is gonna leave a bad reputation to the image of this artist and the band to the public especially in certain location are gonna see some very divided news on this event

im saying this as general yea. okay here i start.
people who are being heterosexual or being homosexual is a normal thing. but showing intimacy and doing something relating to sex in public is absolutely wrong, no matter youre a heterosexual or homosexual, for both is 100% wrong.. homosexual people is a normal person, just like heterosexual people, difference are just the sexuality. and both heterosexual and homosexual people are both was born perfect and they are still peefect, who are we to judge them.. its not what they want, who even can lie to their own feelings, just dont overreact in public, dont lie to yourself and your happiness... the feelings might came naturally so why bother to judge, you need to understand what the people feels and experienced and even to understand what they have experienced before, do not judge people. you may not like them, but dont judge, we have family and kifarah is real.
regarding respect in the country yes its a must, but not just that, need to respect the everyone, literally everyone.
for the people who already purchased the ticket, i hope you guys claim for a full refund, its your money. claim to the one who handle the show. its your money guys, think!
for the one who invite the band, any band actually, you need to study first who and how they behave how they performed, dont just inviting and let them get banned, please be responsible. if they behave oppositely with what the country is, then why bother to invite. please respect each other. if you know they behave oppositely and still invite them then its your problem, and if you know they behave like that and still inviting them and advicing them not to, whats the point of having them because its not "them" if they performed oppositely from their behaviour..
im here standing on my own, i dont support anyone, but just standing on my ground.. and again, you dont need to like people who are heterosexual or homosexual, just respect and dont judge. people have different stories and background. again, respect! thank you everyone.

Of course "background checks" were performed and, I'm not exactly sure to what extent, but their management team actually promised to the organisers that the band would follow the country's guidelines strictly.
It was a step forward that they were invited, and yet they had to break the trust and make it harder for anyone to come perform in Malaysia in the future. Very unfortunately, the organisers placed their trust on the wrong people.

I'm starting to think that Matty needs to shut up. Also, ableist language isn't the hill he should die on for him either, referring to the lawmakers as "lates in French".
I can't abide by the government in Malaysia's stance on LGBTQ rights either.

I used to love The 1975. :( I just love some of return music. Their first two albums are solid. But I've lost so much respect for Matt.
Can I still like their songs? Loving Someone, She's American, Pressure, Me, You, Chocolate, The City, Lostmyhead....
