Asus Zenfone 9 Review: The Best Small Android Flagship Around
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 чер 2024
- The Zenfone 9 is proper flagship - but it's also tiny.
This is no compromised mid-ranger with a dinky display, but a true premium phone, complete with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and a powerful gimbal main camera, albeit all packed into a handset with a screen smaller than 6in - making this comfortably the smallest Android flagship around.
Throw in a surprisingly strong battery life and niceties like a headphone jack and IP rating, and you've got a phone that few could complain about.
Here's why Dom is such a big fan of the Zenfone 9 - and the few flaws he's found that could be reasons to look elsewhere.

This phone is exactly what I need. I'm buying one ! 😎👍
Same stuff here! Funny fact - i had iphone 13 mini, and ITS too small :D Its so hard to type messages with it, so i bet - this size is perfect for small hands :D
I don't understand all this craziness on competing for the largest tablet you could carry in your pockets! This phone is a godsend! I'm so grateful that Asus created it.
Yea it's my favourite non-gaming non-folding phone that isn't a SonyXperia
Yeah I don't need a new phone this year but if I did I'd probably get this one. But I've spent too much money on phones in the last couple years! I still might buy this thing in a year when it's half price on eBay though because I am falling in love with it from afar
@@Mr.aAdDies That's an awful lot of qualifiers.
What a great informative review. Will follow your channel from now on. No other reviewer spoke about why ASUS chose that SOC. Only downside for me is the lack of wireless charging. But I'll buy this one
The only reason I’ll avoid buying the Zenfone 9 is not that it will receive only 2 major android updates but it has only 2 yrs of security updates, which should have been at least 4 or 5 yrs.
Yes. Should have at least 2 + 3 for OS & security. This has the worst update policy in its price range, even most midrangers have longer software support these days.
Although id imagine they could decide to extend the software support should the decide to, the hardware wont be the limiting factor for sure.
They need to get with the program, 4 years minimum
Why is everyone always so carried away by point of os and security updates which I would say is a selling tactics and talking about for example Samsung phone updates pls guys, seriously are you thinking your Samsung would be snappy for that long is totally a big joke as we can see the battery life dropping drastically and also throttling issues with laggy ui filled with bloatware. Any day we can say Asus is best and they are being honest I feel. 2 years of os and security is more than enough
@@puneethj3633 it's not, as a standard companies should support their hardware as long as it's possible and 2 years is very short.
@@puneethj3633 the only downside is the bad cameras
Finally an honest reviewer.
Everyone seems to be blowing smoke up Asus' ass here. It's undoubtedly a great device, vbut everybody seems to have nothing bad to say about it and I just can't believe that because I've owned threes Zenfones before.
Although they were all pretty good, they were just good and nothing extra special. Every time I've had one there was nothing that made me go wow this is an experience.
I've also had Xiaomi, and some other lesser brands and it's all been a similar story.
Then I went over to my very first Samsung smartphone which is the Note 10 lite and it's the first device that has really giving me some super feel good vibes in the user experience department.
And I can finally understand why Apple and Samsung dominate this market even still. It's the user experience that you have to have in order to build trust with customers.
Now, I'm not trying to claim that Samsung and Apple are the best and everything else is crap. It's just that everyone else and especially Asus has to take a few lessons from them in terms of making a device not just a device. I mean every manufacturer and company makes decent hardware these days, it's about nailing the experience.
And you're absolutely right that Asus has to offer more than 2 years of OS updates and security patches otherwise they're just making good devices as they have before but are falling short as they always have.
I'm considering this phone and an S-series Samsung phone - could you share examples of the best UI/UX features that your Samsung phone has?
Great insight on the power efficiency of the chipset!
Thank you for the great review! Quick questions - do you find there to be a lag between when you press the shutter button and when the camera actually takes the picture? Did you try the Pro Mode in the camera app and adjusting shutter speeds? I'm basically only worried about capturing clear photos of moving kids in indoor light conditions, and some other reviews lead me to believe this could be a problem with this phone....
Thank you
common Asus atleast make it 3 years, Samsung committed to 4.
It's important to note that on Android app updates from Google Play services happen in perpetuity. So all the apps will still be updated even after the end of life.
And yes Samsung has committed to longer software, But they have an older version of the chip ( or worse yet you have to get exynos) , the s22 has a tiny 3700 battery, And they were delisted from Geekbench for the GOS throttling scandal. They're being investigated by their home countries. FCC for this issue.
They also removed the headphone jack, expandable storage etc.... Personally, I would take this phone over the s22 every time.
@@michaelcorcoran8768 yes app updates matter and the update for that won't cease(for a long time). But Android version does matter . And as for the headphone jack, I do agree with Samsung that it's an older technology and must be removed in favor of other components, usbc adapter exist
You are not getting either.. So why bother
@@shravp769 why bother eih you asked: Android updates are 1 of my considerations as the compact size is
I searched for the Sunset Red version, with 16GB RAM and 256 GB, but only the Midnight Black version got these specs. Does anyone know if these specs are exclusive for the black version or if they'll also come for the other colors?
I've read Asus will eventually offer the other colors but have yet to see it.
Yes, 16/256 reserved for black version only
9:41 - In terms of Android updates, I would argue that my experience has gotten worse the more my phone has updated past Android 10. Sometimes new Android versions aren't always better than the old ones, although it would be nice to at least have security updates for a longer period.
I do think the importance of updates are overstated. I saw a post on the Android subreddit, and not a single person when queried had ever been able to identify a time where they were victimized by having a phone that wasn't on the latest security patch. I mean everyone give along lecture about the potential vulnerabilities but not a single anecdotal example of actual consequences for using a dated phone!
Unless you have incredibly valuable proprietary data, as long as you're using a fairly recent version of Android that still gets Google Play services apps, it's pretty secure.
I think people exaggerate the importance of updates to scare people into buying newer phones sooner.
There's also some misinformation because unlike iOS, app updates are decoupled from OS updates with Android. So basically anything running Android 7.1 or newer is still getting regular app updates to the Google Play services. But at least in the US for most people use an iPhone, they just assume that you get no support whatsoever when the phone hits its end of life..
Good job man! Nice channel 😁😀
if the bootloader is unlock able it is not a deal breaker after two years lots of rom will available otherwise two years update is too short for phone at this price range
Wish it was about $150 cheaper
At the same price as the pixel 6a I'd go for it. Absolute no brainer. But at this price range I'm not so sure.
Even 100 $ cheaper would be tempting to ditch current phone.
I'm considering buying the Zenfone 9 or a iphone 13 mini, have you taken raw photos with both of the phones? (The iphone using some third party app) Have you tested the slowest shutter speed you could get without shake thanks to stabilization in the main cameras?? I want a small phone with a good camera and I'm torn between the zenfone9 and iphone 13 mini. I don't care about jpeg quality but I really want a good raw main camera
I'm confused. My beloved Xperia XZ1 Compact which hasn't gotten any updates for ages by your logic isn't able to give me a "good experience" ???
Good review!
Such a shame that they're only offering 2 years software support. Lineage will probably be available so I might take the plunge!

That's good to know if I ever did buy this phone. The white one was definitely on my short list. I do like white phones. I'll keep my eyes peeled to see if other people have the issue.
4 years of os upgrades is great for the average consumer, but for the person like myself who wants to keep up with the latest tech and make good on trade in and resale values, two years is fine, because after two years the resale value will be two low to put towards your next device.
4 years would be better for your resale of the phone tho
@@chriswest2290 How? As time passes, the value goes down. The only time the value would go up on something is as it becomes harder to obtain. Smartphones don't typically work like that as they become obsolete given they stop receiving updates and components like the battery, and screen age. OnePlus offers like 150 dollars for the 7 Pro I'm trade in value while Samsung offers like 75 dollars. That's only going to continue to go down until they just don't accept it at all.
Thanks for the review and I was pretty much all in until you came to the end and you said only two software updates come on at that price a minimum of three with an extra year of security updates so 4 years total is needed for this phone to sell

Where can you buy one ?
no matter how many features you pack into that smaller form factor.. youtubers will always find some or the other glitches.. this is a best small phone in current scenario.. and it clearly is visible that Asus has worked hard on this.. still why so much negativity
Yeah you nailed it. UA-camrs obsess over anything wrong with the phones they can find if unless it's Samsung or Apple. The reason for this is because if you have a mostly North American audience, 90% of them own Samsung and Apple.
So you score a lot of points by trashing all the competition. MHKBD I heard gave this a pretty good review but he is notorious for trashing any competition to Samsung on the Androids side. He had a public service announcement about some bugs on the pixel 6 even though he barely mentioned Samsung having five generations of S phones de-listed from Geekbench and having a class action lawsuit for a throttling scandal.
But trashing any competition to Apple or Samsung is a great way to get your audience to watch and click, and it's also helps keep it algorithmically boosted.
That's why I guarantee you they'll trash the pixel 7 and the OnePlus 10T and then Microsoft Duo 3. If it's not Samsung or Apple they either ignore it or trash it.
MHKBD's recent review of the Pixel 6A was constructive. He told people to buy the a53 instead even though it has far inferior cameras and an inferior chip, just because of the refresh rate. Mr. Who's the boss trashed the 12S ultra from Xiaomi because the front-facing camera didn't do 4K. And the phone like this, they'll probably emphasize updates.
Don't just find a few metrics where Samsung and Apple take the lead and decide those are deal breakers.
And if there's nothing wrong with the phone obstensively, they'll just say bugs. Because every phone has some bugs?
I should clarify that I'm talking about North American UA-camrs. Generally speaking, it might not be as bad in Asia or India or Europe where there's a lot more competition and Samsung and Apple don't have 93% of the market share combined
So pretty. Wish i could have the white one 😍
I know some people who are going to love this!
what's the SOT u were getting mostly?

Very nice design and price than others smartphones.
I don't put more than 2 software updates as one of the must feature for a flagship smartphone. I am not fan of lots of regular updates, particularly in case of Android it sometimes alters and worsens the original functionality of the cellphone+OS combination. For example in my phone after update to Android 10 the screenshot feature got disturbed such a way that my old habit of taking screenshot needed to be altered. Security patches updates on regular basis is fine though.

Actually, what tipped me to buy this phone is the promise of only 2 years of updates. As far as I'm concerned, any updates after 2 years are more likely than not to degrade the phone performance and operations.
For those of us who would just be wasting money buying a flagship though, they should make a "lite" version with lower specs and a few $100 knocked off the price.
I really wish they'd make exactly that. Especially since it's a small phone, it would kill at a mid-range price - Dom
Man this phone is perfect but about 200 euro more than it needs to be imo. Way too much.
My thinking exactly. You can buy an s22 for 200 less than this, with zoom and none of the camera issues seen on this phone.
@@corsinivideos but s22 is running on arguable worse hardware and crippled battery life. Even 10 years of software promise can't fix that.
@@SahilKumar-zp8fx battery not crippled at all it's average on s22. The camera on this zenfone has bad problems with red hue, shutter delay, night mode and updates will not be good.
@@corsinivideos Down the line with more bloatware and ageing battery, it will be crippled. Samsung is known for pushing bloatware with new updates, and ads here and there (I've seen it on s21 that my brother has). Regarding Zenfone 9, it's yet to go on sale and reviewers are using pre-production units that they got weeks ago. Again nothing that can't be fixed with an update. But bad battery and bad processor can't be fixed with Software updates, which is the case with s22. I think their main agenda is to push updates that cripple devices so people go out and buy a new one. Same thing apple does. But yeah 3 years of updates should be standard on a device that costs this much.
@@SahilKumar-zp8fx your statement is really conflicting here, even if battery life is not ideal, people like a form factor in their hands and need to keep it for a long time is very crucial when it comes to software updates

I honestly didn't notice any meaningful problems with my blue one (your eyes must be better than mine!) which is why I gave Asus some benefit of the doubt, but yeah it was very bad with my initial white model, sorry to hear you also had it with the black one - which you'd think would be the least likely to have that problem! - Dom

just get 2 years OS updates? c'mon asus, not worth for 799.
It's actually $699 in most parts of the world. And most enthusiasts who buy phones at this price range upgrade every two years or less anyways.
Not to mention with Android, app updates are decoupled from OS upgrades. It's funny when Samsung was behind other companies with updates, everyone said hardware was what mattered. Now Samsung has major throttling scandals, they're exynos. Chips are trash, they've removed the headphone jack and expandable storage,... But now everyone sites the long-term software support.
And of course Apple doesn't provide app updates that are decoupled from OS upgrades. So when Apple stop supporting a phone it's truly dead. It gets no more app updates at all. But that's not true on Android where you'll get Google Play service updates long after you stop getting OS upgrades and security patches.
I think there's a lot of misinformation out there and most of it seems to benefit Samsung and Apple. Which is by design.
Ehm, talking about Camara, great nightshots and not showing it...? 👎
Ben's gadget reviews did some good camera work with it. I agree. It drives me crazy when tech reviewers don't actually show us them using the phone. Even the biggest channels seem to just fiddle around with the UI. Take a few pictures around their studio and call it a day.
But Ben's gadget reviews does a lot of on the street vlogging and he was very satisfied with it. It's not going to outperform the $1,000 plus flagships with huge sensors from but it takes better pictures than a base s22 or a Z flip etc...
It even has a gimbal on the main shooter.

2: The camera, sure its far from bad but you do loose a lens compared to other brands and the quality is still a behind samsung and that makes it hard to swap to for me.
Otherwise this looks to be like the Oneplus of old and I love it!
@@puneethj3633 Well I have had my Samsung for soon 4 years now and it's only lately it has started to fail me. Not in Battery even if that is shorter. No it's getting laggy and don't support some apps. If the phones where as cheap as they where 4 years ago I would be fine with shorter update time, but not with today's prices.
Snapdragon 7xx could be much better for this phone price.... Also 800 eur phone without wireless charging is a joke and that fingerprint button is not bad, but I am lelft handed, so i would choose fingerprint in the screen. But I really like this one. Great size, design, best music phone and gimbal camera is so nice...
You can use your left index for fingerprint
@@ralph6089 I agree with you. Why is left hand a problem with this compact size?
I am gonna have to save my kidney I mean money and buy the red one. I am impressed Asus. I am tired carrying a heavy phone
May GOD BLESS YOU & Your Family Too.
what a weak, effort-free review
it's so tough buying phones with 2-3 years of updates when you can get 5+ years at the same price with apple. Not a fanboy, I'm rocking Xiaomi and Pixel with iPad on side, but upgrading for this price makes me inclined towards iPhones.
My 2015 ipad mini got an update yesterday. 🤣

this guy is so boring. i yawn so many time while watching
Today's phones are priced wrong! - at least 200-300$ overpriced! And no SD card, no jack, no wireless charging, no charger, , no etc, no nothing!? And badly overheating problem! Basically a downgrade from the old cheeper phones...
No jack??
@@adamsadul967 was a general opinion.{many phones like Samsung, iPhone etc doesn't have those goodies}. This one has jack. But no SD card, no wireless charging, low battery capacity.
@@inSaNe_44 the bateryy on this phone is good, the problem is the price, and specially considering it only will have 2 years of update, wich is a joke
There's absolutely no way I can use a phone of this size. I may like for just a week or two and then I don't want it anymore. Who told Asus that people will fall for this?
You're not the center of the universe.
@@felicitysmoak1860 amen
Are you the people?
@@endeffekttube jup...2 people were enough for this masterplan of Doom 😈
Speak for yourself. This is ideal for me. well done Asus!
The title of this video is a joke, I know the Zenfone 9 have some advantages over the Galaxy S22, but the S22 has even more advantages, if you can't see what they are, that's your problem.
Everyone has their own personal opinion, but one great advantage that S22 does have is long term support (4 years vs 2 years). Also im not sure how much s22 cost, but if it's cheaper, than i guess that's also a good point
@@takimara154 But what will those updates bring? They can't fix the poor battery life and the processor than performs even worse than a midrange. I'd love if Asus offer more years of updates, but the updates in s22 aren't of any advantage in terms of battery longevity and experience. Knowing Samsung, they'll even cripple the device with updates so that you are forced to buy a new one. And that battery is gonna perform like a 3000mah battery very soon. The updates sound good on paper for reputation, but the practical use case is clearly missing.
@@SahilKumar-zp8fx so you are going to assume everything that can be supported for eternity that is anti e-waste is a shady practice? Lol then you should criticize Fairphone and Frameworks for providing long-lasting parts and updates.
@@baoquoc3710 Framework's business model actually increases the longetivty of the device. So does Fairfone, they don't launch a phone every year and want you to keep your phone longer. While these brands don't want you keep using the your existing device. That's why they have hard to replace battery and parts, easily breakable glass backs, and software updates that makes the device worse. The entry level models are made worse on purpose to upsell their Pro devices. No company want you to keep their phone longer. Some do it via shorter update period, some do it by pushing buggy updates. Atleast with some phones I can install Custom Roms, but that's impossible with an iPhone, and pretty harder with a galaxy decides running exynos. One thing great about Zenfone is Asus gives better developer support, so you can flash and Custom Rom and practically run it for years. So yeah, updates aren't as important as you think on an Android phone, as long as the manufacturer supports unlocking bootloader.
@@SahilKumar-zp8fx also I don't get it....why even a smartphone needs upgrade for more than 3 years
Whatever phone is this, it will be definitely old after 2 years of usage
So I agree with you✌🏻
I have no intension to use a phone for more than 2 years
