Is boob plate female armor dangerous?

  • Many people claim that medieval armor that has breast shapes made to emphasize the female form is detrimental to the armor's effectiveness, even saying that it's dangerous to the wearer but I feel there's more to this than they realize.

      There is nothing inherently not family-friendly about the word boobs. Children feed at boobs. People's mums have boobs. Kids will grow up around other kids who will develop boobs.
      What makes boobs not family-friendly is when boobs talk about boobs only in a sexual way. Boobs do not just exist to be sexualized, even though boobs are emphasized a lot by artists in a sexual manner. Barbies have boobs, and are for kids, and are not sexualized. Some birds are called boobies. Hopefully you consider this boob conversation in a different light, and eventually people can stop using their boob-tubes to look at boobs in only one way, becoming boobs over boobs.

Besides, the only way boob plate would've been done historically is with pieces on the armor separate from the main body. The breasts don't actually need to fit inside the breasts on the armor. Same as how no one who wore a codpiece actually stuck his dick inside it, it was a separate piece with no connection to armor itself

    • @TheZorginator1

      Meerkat More the points is that armor raised right there and particularly heavy armor means that falling on your front means taking all that weight concentrated in the chest area. While I can understand sliding the dome up to the chest region, I disagree with the distinct boobs shape because of one reason: the way clothing works. Not to say that it COULDN'T be done because it could, but generally speaking... when you look at clothing on boobs, it does not vacuum seal to the boobs. You look at a shirt on a woman and it doesn't conform to the boob shape like the fantasy armor that has the dip between the boobs. So when you bring up the matter of padding... That padding would lend itself to the "uniboob" appearance.
    Not to mention, it would likely be uncomfortable to attempt to slot boobs into metal cavities for them. Again, the padding could mitigate that... but every time I've seen a woman wear layers and layers of padding, if you can see the shape of her chest at all, it's in the uniboob shape rather than being able to see the distinct breasts.

      I assume the padding will be like a bra, shaped to each breast. Or would be inside the metal itself, which as it’s metal, holds the shape without support. The reason shirts and soft cloth doesn’t conform to each breast shape is due to the flexibility and lack of support inherent in the material.

    The issue with the "boobplate" would be that it would be a lot more expensive, and if not treated properly, would be quite a lot lower quality than normal breastplates. It'd be difficult to form the breasts without extensive training, and without that, the steel would be quite liable to cracking in the forging process, and if it didn't crack, and the smith managed to actually get the domes of the breasts properly, the steel would likely be thinner than the rest of the breastplate, just due to the forging process alone.
    Normal plate is hella expensive as is, but imagine now having to get specially trained blacksmiths to forge plate armor in a way that allows for the domes and a relatively consistent thickness of the steel, with a high chance of the steel cracking. You'd be looking at easily twice or thrice of the price of normal steel plate, and the quality would be dubious from anywhere else if you weren't looking to fork over a small estate to the local blacksmith.

      I found the same mistake was made on my part as well. In fact I believe I made a comment referencing the sternum argument before in the previous video. Shad's amazing at this kind of thing.
      Still prefer the just "Raised bulge" style of armor, rather than the dedicated boob shape plate, just like I found the whole pectoral plate thing on some Roman armor silly. If you're wearing armor, I think that says enough about you, rather than going over the top with it.

    • @telekevontoloko8247

      I still think the "boob plate" wouldn't be very efective, because the dome shape is not there just to deflect incoming strikes, but mostly to transfer and spread out the impact force to the softer, more "meaty" areas of your body (like the waist or upper part of your chest). If the plate gets too close to more "bony" areas there is a risk that any strike with a mace or warhammer (or just a heavy sword) could brake your lower ribs or collar bone.

    • @carroboi2981

    • @MrAranton
      @MrAranton 5 років тому +3

      I still think boob plates don't make sense, though for a different reason. Women are on avarage about 30% weaker than men; they are shorter (i.e. have less range melee weapons), and if just half the complaints about how debilitating PMS is are true, they're not able to train and hone their fighting skill as continously as men. All of which puts women at a significant disadvantage in fighting situations (whoever disagrees with that assessment: If I'm wrong, violence against women is no worse than violence against men). Of course a female knight would make short work with a male peasant; but against a male knight the odds are against her. Armour emphasizing their feminity would highlight the women in them as weak-spots in a gender-mixed formation and/or comparatively easy pickings in less structured fighting situations and turn them into priority targets. To minimize that effect, women should wear armour that makes them look as male or genderless as possible.
      Being noticeable female would also affect how their male comrades would behave. Most men have a strong impulse to help women, protect them and to keep them out of harm's way. For a while Israel used mixed gender front-line combat units, but they gave that up because the protective impulses the men had when women around them were in danger or got hurt were detrimental to combat effectiveness.

    • @carroboi2981
      @carroboi2981 5 років тому +7

      @@MrAranton That's still not entirely fair. If we run with the assumption a woman cannot train as often as a man, then all she requires is more time to make up for the difference, is more time. Strength might play a factor, but force multipliers (if we're talking about knights, a lance and a charging war horse will still run someone down regardless of who wields the lance.) even the odds.
      And violence (that isn't agreed upon in a consenting manner beforehand) is always bad regardless of gender.

Therefore any shots that may be "guided to the sternum" would actually be covered by the side of the boob plate and actually be deflected out and down or out away from the target. I fight in "boobieplate" (HEMA, SCA, and The Adrian Empire) and have never had a problem with the fabled magnetic cleavage of blade catching. Also, our breast do uh "compress" when pressure is applied. This too helps absorb a blow. And yes my gambosen is made to fit quite comfortably in the cups.

Linnen and the glues used to laminate the layers were organic and rotted away quite quickly, which skews the archaeological record, so it seemingly indicates metal designs were a lot more common than they actually were.

    I think a lot of people also don't understand that in the low Middle Ages, an armor was as much a piece of protective combat gear as a work of art that shows the wearer's wealth. They analyse it like a modern military would do: all function and effectiveness and no care for looks or appearance (at least not much care anyway). To the medieval noble or financially successful mercenary, showing off your wealth and prestige was an important consideration. So armorers actually made their armors so that they would both be very effective and protective, but also aesthetically pleasing. So, as the time went on, you increasingly saw flutes, added riveted decorations, guilded parts, embossements and other things that don't really add to protective value (except flutes maybe), but emphasizes the wealth and prestige of the wearer. It went to the point that specifically made "parade" armor were commissioned in the Renaissance which were often painted and were very heavilly decorated while still being fully functional and protective (although nobody went to war with them as they were too precious to let them be damaged in battle).
    So, while "boob armor" is fantasy, if women had been warriors in significant numbers in the Middle Ages or Renaissance, specifically feminine plate armor might have been made and would probably emphasizes the female figure to various levels. I however doubt it would have shown unrealistic breast size like we often see, but it would have certainly existed I believe.

I am a history student at Houston Baptist University in Houston Texas, and also a medieval enthusiast, a role player with over 17 years of experience playing d&d (not that it means anything just wanted to brag a bit), and an amateur reenactor. Something I thought of that I think you may have not considered, is, though it is very true that the blow being redirected into the sternum area would not be by any means lethal, as you stated, since it is in fact still hardened steel, the force of that blow, though mostly absorbed at the point of impact, would be directed into that area, and thus push the defender of the blow off balance. This I believe would leave them vulnerable to a subsequent strike into the more vulnerable parts of the armor you pointed out in your video here, which could then be lethal. This I believe is especially prominent in females, who are already naturally more top heavy than males. Now of course, this is all just speculation, but I was wondering what your thoughts would be on the point of balance? Thanks! Love your videos!

    I've watched both videos and tend to agree with you. Though I will say their is some fantasy boob armor that is completely ridiculous. Not because it shows individual Brest's but because it makes them look skin tight and/or complete reshapes the armor to show they exist. A lot of models you have shown are more practical, enough definition to be noticeable, but not so overdone that it looks ridiculous. Though I will admit a lot of people seem to freak out even at the versions that just give a little definition or even just a slight curve in upper part of the chest plate. I think it might actual make sense that some armors would put that in, especially for more ceremonial armor. But even combat type, people care about esthetic, and I suppose some people would simply like knowing if the person in the fully coating of armor was male or female for convents sake.

      Only the SJW/NPC/soyboi ones. I have been in the gaming hobby for many years and anecdotally have noticed that wargamers tend to skew conservative, while RPGers tend to roll liberal. One reason I believe is the propensity of RPG's to have a" do as thou will" attitude and the GM as being final adjudicator to wit the rules are malleable to the situation/whims of the group's playstyle. Most wargames however have the rules as such to be an agreement between gentlemen and as such have a high level of immutability, it requires both parties to be "law abiding" as it were and cannot change the rules on a whim.

    I mentioned this on the last video but I'll say it again here, because apparently no one else seems to mention it in these sorts of conversations: And that is that. let's say, 'highly-aesthetic' suits of armour (like Hery VIII-ths suit) may not have actually seen any real life-threatening combat. Often only the lords and barons and kings and such could afford such beautifully detailed and custom-built armours; so the suit was also to single them out on the battlefield as being rich nobles. Then if they lost the battle, they'd be captured instead of killed, held hostage, and eventually sold back to their family. And that is the greatest form of protection of all! If you wore boring old un-detailed armour then you might just get killed with the rest of your troops. (It also inspires your own soldiers when they can see that their leader [and the person who pays them] is still alive).
    Thus, if you are a woman of lordly calibre, then wearing some boob-shaped plates to show-off your wealth might be exactly the right thing to do.

    This is a pretty solid argument, but as a boob-owner, I have a few arguments as to why at least the model of perfectly moulded two-boob plate armour might not actually be practical, even if it isn't necessarily dangerous. Also, disclaimer, I have no "official" knowledge on medieval practices, everything I'm talking about comes from facts I've learned from internet research, a few college courses on the subject, and my personal experiences as a boob-owner.
    1. Boobs are very squishy! Even if you have a breast plate perfectly moulded to the person's breasts, they're going to be bouncing or wobbling around inside the plate during a fight, which sounds extremely uncomfortable.
    2. I would imagine that if medieval women were fighting for whatever reason, and wearing armour, they would probably make an attempt to bind their breasts in some fashion to keep them from wobbling around, and thus likely flattening them out too much to benefit from a perfectly moulded boob plate.
    3. Considering the extra padding one would probably wear under a breast plate, even the fabric of a regular shirt usually stretches across a woman's breasts, meaning that at best, you could make a domed boob-plate work, but not one moulded exactly to the person's breast shape.
    4. This one could potentially be somewhat harmful, or at least leave someone wearing boob plate armour with some serious bruising. If the boob armour comes to a point underneath the breasts, again, since boobs are squishy, they would not necessarily be protected OR protect you if you fall on your front, and the point of the boob plate has some serious potential to dig into the person's ribs, leaving at the least, bruises, and at the most, breaking a few ribs. Especially if it's hardened steel.
    I know this video is a year and a half old, and I'm really not saying there's anything wrong with this argument. I think it's pretty solid, but I think the points I've offered up here are yet other factors that would likely need to be considered in considering the practicality of full boob-plate armour.

      Maybe the boob model is for cerimonials and the domed is for actual battles.

    • @LadyKjell

      Thing is people don't wear plate armor on bare skin... There's an arming doublet (or similar garment) underneath, and there's definitely room for a bra if you like, so it's not like it's bare breast hitting steel. And I find the idea of chest binding to be far more discomforting than the idea of the everyday bounce, even if it's a bit worse-feeling in a fight because of the armor. Chest binding is not great for heavy exercise, so it'd be terrible in combat anyway. A simple chest wrap / bra situation? Sure.
      I don't think Shad is arguing for "molding exactly to the person's breast shape"; just having it shaped or less like what's underneath.
      As for avoiding pointy pieces? That's gonna depend a lot on the specifics of the armor design. There's a ton of potential variation, so it's hard to make a sweeping statement. But I'd say generally, just make sure it's got enough space under the plate and it's shaped right to protect enough against blunt force, like I'd expect any armor to do. But also, falling over will hurt in any armor, no armor, or the squishiest coat ever; falling just hurts.

    • @jimbeam8338
      @jimbeam8338 2 роки тому

      I mean it's not like you're naked under the armor lol You're most likely wearing some kind of garment or gambeson or something. Your breasts most likely wouldn't be sitting inside of the "boobplate". The boobplate would really just be decoration just like the old Greek muscle armor. It's not like the Greek's actual pecs and abs were sitting perfectly into the molded muscles, it was simply for decoration/intimidation.
