I've actually "shot myself" (with ricochets) and stopped the bullet pieces with my skin. I once shot a very light loaded percussion cap revolver into a piece of plywood and had it bounce off and smack into my shin. I was taken aback with the thought "I just shot myself"...
Regardless of how effective it is, I feel like the pure fear that would be struck into the heart of a robber who came across a homeowner in full plate would be more than sufficient.
If I broke into a house and after a few minutes finally got the door open only to see a knight in full plate with a Morningstar, I’d dip out immediately
I know this is a joke but I want to leave this here anyways. There is a vast difference in cost between a block of metal that can be (relatively) easily melted back together, and a high quality, finished item made from said metal.
@@robbygood3458 You're missing my main point. If I have a block of steel/gold/tungsten/titanium or whatever and put it under destructive testing, no what happens, I'll probably still have a block of whatever if I melt it down and cast it again. If I shoot something that's been manufactured however, all I'm gonna get from breaking it down is the absolute, rawest materials and parts from something worth more than the sum of its parts. If you for whatever reason you need one metric ton of steel, you can get it for less than a thousand dollars. Buying a riveted steel mail hauberk is about half that, despite not weighing over a thousand pounds.
If my memory serves, there were also attempts to 'bulletproof' knights by wearing a breastplate over a cuirass. The breastplate had the design to help deflect it and absorb most of the impact, along with the cuirass as a backup for any shots that got through to stop any left over penetrative power. Mind you, this only worked for frontal shots to the chest and was very successful if the wearer could withstand the extra weight. Modern high power firearms will probably still treat it like paper, but things like birdshot or other low calibre rounds will struggle to pull off anything other than a dent, due to a second layer to stop it.
Skalgarim did a video similar to this. His helmet survived a shotgun. Realistically armor is meant to keep you alive. Leaving uninjured is just a luxury. Also that armor in the video looked cheap
@@nubreed13 it doesn't just look cheap, it looks absolutely nothing like actual armour, you can tell when armour is proper because it looks sturdy and has thickness. Well Spaniards did use a Guns vs Heavy Cavalry thing pretty well in the Battle of Biccoca against the French. Fun fact: the term "bulletproof" was originally used to describe armor that had been proved (tested) by shooting bullets at it to demonstrate that it was capable of stopping them. But the term wasn't used until the 19th century, well after the medieval period had ended. As guns and bullets continued to get better, less and less armor survived the proofing process intact, which is why it fell out of favor: the added mass needed to keep up with evolving gun technology made it too heavy and bulky for soldiers to wear and still be effective in combat.
As long as ,round balls' had been used, the cuirasses of heavy heavy cavallry could stop balls in some distance. But after 30years war in Germany or Parlament war in Great Brittain the armies became very large, it would have been expensiv to equip all men with armour, also the way of warfare became quicker. With exeption of cuirassiers, also some armour keept in use for siege warfare, for example helmets for looking out of tremches, or sometimes for working with explosives. The penetration became better with rfled muskets using , long projectiles' of smaller bore than muskets. In US civil war 1861- 1865 private bought vests with a two piece breasts had produced, they could protect against rifles over 100 yards. The german Grabenpanzer of wwl was also protecting in long distances.
I prefer Shad's analogy, the airsoft gun. A Hipoint handgun, unreliable and inaccurate as it is, can still effectively kill someone when it does decide to shoot. The "sword" can't be used as a sword would be, and the "armor" can't protect you from the weapons of its time, so they're more like toys than low-quality weapons. Sure, you can bludgeon someone to death with the cheap-ass "sword", but you can do the same thing with the airsoft gun, that's not how you're supposed to use a sword or gun.
I think the best thing to compare medieval guns and armour to is modern guns and armor. Especially if you are talking to a gun youtuber. Modern guns have a large variety in power, from .22 to .50 BMG, and modern ballistic armor also has variety, from lightweight or clear plastic and composite armors, to ceramic with III+ and IV level protection.
Could we imagine if Shad and Demo met up and did a "bow vs firearms" video with shad's warbows and demos guns. And then they can swap and try and shoot each others weapons.
Didn't they do a crossover, I've seen so many youtube crossovers i don't remember, maybe I saw the crossover with How Ridiculous and thought he did Matt as well
When you were talking about reload time and accuracy the only thing in my head was Lars Anderson shooting 4 arrows while jumping and hitting flying coins...
In regards to the early hand cannons in Europe, it goes a bit beyond accuracy: Reliability. The older handcannons were fired by metal rods dipped in either hot coal or over a fire source of some kind till it was hot enough, then the gun was struck by this hot metal rod. These early methods were far from the safest thing in the world as i have read a number of accounts the mention these cannons exploding quite violently. And really, he didn't do the Gambison justice in his tests :( .That armor doesn't get enough love anymore outside of this community
You bring a good point to "classifications" of armor. Kinda like how we literally have classifications for current body armor depending on what kind of bullets they will "usually" stop. Like level 1-3 and wether they have the A classification with the number rating.
Its not like he's got direct access to a forge. Matt's Budget also isnt unlimited like some people think it is. I think he would LOVE to do a series of videos on this but it would take so much dam money its not cost effective. He'd need the mother of all sponsorships to pull that off.
I believe most commonly metal gets that shiny look as you put it by having a zinc coat. Also zinc coating can be one way of making very low quality metal look like it has a high tinsile strength, which does scam people into buying cheap, but shiny metal they think is tough. It's happened to me before too. Galvanizing in my experience typically ends with a very matt grey appearance. I know it's over a month from the upload, but hopefully this can inform whomever reads it.

Lets put it in words Matt is gonna understand: That armor and sword are the equivalent of a Hipoint, but worse
A Hi-Point nerf gun?
