    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sean (Justin TImberlake) gives Mark (Jesse Eisenberg) business advice while partying at a night club.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director David Fincher (Fight Club, Seven) teams with screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing) to explore the meaning of success in the early 21st century from the perspectives of the technological innovators who revolutionized the way we all communicate. The year was 2003. As prohibitively expensive technology became affordable to the masses and the Internet made it easy to stay in touch with people who were halfway across the world, Harvard undergrad and computer programming wizard Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) launched a website with the potential to alter the very fabric of our society. At the time, Zuckerberg was just six years away from making his first million. But his hearty payday would come at a high price, because despite all of Zuckerberg's wealth and success, his personal life began to suffer as he became mired in legal disputes, and discovered that many of the 500 million people he had friended during his rise to the top were eager to see him fall. Chief among that growing list of detractors was Zuckerberg's former college friend Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield), whose generous financial contributions to Facebook served as the seed that helped the company to sprout. And some might argue that Zuckerberg's bold venture wouldn't have evolved into the cultural juggernaut that it ultimately became had Napster founder Sean Parker (Justin Timberlake) not spread the word about Facebook to the venture capitalists from Silicon Valley. Meanwhile, the Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer and Josh Pence) engage Zuckerberg in a fierce courtroom battle for ownership of Facebook that left many suspecting the young entrepreneur might have let his greed eclipse his better judgment. The Social Network was based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich.

well, its kind of a great and weird co-incidence that you are commenting from 'patrick bateman' as if you search american psycho bar scene you would find videos of the making of that movie where they show bar scene where patrick bateman and detective talk loud as if they are talking in a bar with loud music but in reality they are screaming even when there is no music in the background as they add up music later, so basically what you are praising this movie for has been done before in the same movie your character is from.

Yet there are films / scenes where you can't hear what the people are saying even though there is almost none or none at all background noise. That can make following a story really annoying. Some big budget films suffer from this too, but mostly it's the problem in domestic films here in Finland. probably lot of other smaller countries too.

Ayush Gour social networking existed before Facebook, but Facebook altered the very nature of social networking. Because of it, social networking is a daily part of people's lives. Businesses have pages on every big social network site. The news posts updates the same as people posting about their new shoes. MySpace was considered by most adults as teenagers putting their photos online. Nowadays, parents might more or less still think the same of their kids, but they post stuff online just as much. People announce weddings now through things like Facebook. Facebook was not a holy shit idea because it was the first of social networking, it was a brilliant idea because the idea was infectious and everyone wanted in on it. Even though now anyone can have access to Facebook, when it started it was a sign of being exclusive. And eventually it became about being able to share and experience life all from the comfort of your couch. It's simplicity and connectivity was what made it addictive.

Can I promote it with money I don't have? That's where the issues arise. Facebook was hardly original, and in its earliest states it was mediocre, but it spread because they had access to venues to strengthen it, whereas most don't.

I love this scene; for various reasons but others on here have pointed those out so I'll add something here I noticed.
Mark is very impressionable here, he is extremely impressed with Sean's attitude and foresight into business and sees something in Sean that he truly wants to be: confident, charismatic and intelligent. When Sean talks him up by bringing up FaceMash, that Mark tries to feebly explain was a mistake but is quickly overridden by Sean's better version of events (which you will notice is just another reason to talk up himself) you can see Mark readily accepting that "fact" to bolster his ego. That's why he asks Sean if he still thinks about his former love, because he's excitedly trying to find more common ground with this person he identifies with.
In a long roundabout way I'm trying to say this script is so excellent because it conveys human nature so well. Ask yourself if you've had conversations like this (especially drunk) and draw similarities.

One thing I love about this scene is Seans inability to answer the question about the 'one that got away'. What makes it so masterful is that if the question was answered honestly, it would have cut through Sean's bravado; the entire scene, he's a salesman, but Mark finally has this key moment to ask him about an ex-lover that could potentially open him up and make him vulnerable. But, before we can even get to his answer, his Victoria's Secret model date returns to the table and the false charm is forced to come back up to cover his vulnerability. The moment is gone and Mark, hoping to get some guidance from a more experienced Sean is left without.

@@mansworld7079 When you watch the film again, take note of Mark's exchanges with Erica Albright, specifically when he's initially dumped, and then later in the film when he attempts to re-establish a connection, and then finally when he sends her a friend request at the end. The driving force in creating Facebook (in the film at least) was due to the rejection of Erica Albright. In this scene, Mark is looking up to Sean, as you've said, a successful man who figured out how to be happy - Mark sees this and aspires to be like Sean - especially when discussing the 'one that got away', because as Mark sees it, him and Sean have common ground in that area and a frank discussion about it would give Mark direction. If it were a moment in honestly, Sean would be able to level with Mark and tell him, "Look, it hurts a lot, for a long time, but you find that you'll be able to get out of your own head and someday you'll find that she won't cross your mind as much." The key here is that he can't, because his Victoria's Secret model date has returned to the table his response is accordingly abrupt. Keep in mind too, Mark has been under Sean's influence since the first dinner, a man whom Eduardo has warned him about - this comes full circle when Sean is arrested at the party for drug use, and Mark knows that the story is going to reflect on Facebook. We see Sean at his lowest, and from this point on, Mark finds himself unable to look up to Sean for direction.

I love the “parable” of Victoria’s Secret, there’s a lot of layers, one interpretation is that its about not selling out before you know what something is really worth. But it could also be read as protecting your creation and keeping something that gives you purpose. I think for Roy Raymond it may have been less about losing millions versus losing his creation and his purpose. It most certainly took a enormous amount of work just to get the company to where he got it, probably consuming most of his life, after he sold it, what he lost was the purpose that came with running the business and building it day to day, I think thats what he missed most, not simply the money, but I could be wrong. To build a successful business you have to really care about the product you are creating, if you’re just thinking about making a ton of money you will likely make a lackluster product which will ultimately fail.

How they made this scene is really cool. First, they shot the scene without the blaring bopping music playing overhead. So the actors were shouting their lines in the room, then they put in the sound mixing and music in post production.

The JT I "knew" from real life back in the late 90's and early 2000's was the pop star dude, and he was a good pop star. But I think his acting skills are way better then his singing, dancing and entertaining skills (as a musician/singer/dancer). He sounds so natural doing a acting role. I wonder what JT is up to now.

This scene reminds a lot of the Darth Plagueis monologue from Revenge of the Sith. Hell, the lines "not from a Jedi" and "where the hell is Eduardo" essentially serve the same purpose: the powerful figure the protagonist admires (Palpatine/Sean) is manipulating the emotionally vulnerable protagonist into slowly turning on his friend/partner (Obi-wan/Eduardo).

Sean wasn't just using a fancy story to tell Mark about his date he was subtly pointing out that Mark shouldn't sell The Facebook early even if he gets a seemingly amazing offer, that story could be easily retold but with Mark, as opposed to Roy Raymond. Example: This guy named Mark Zuckerberg has a hard time connecting with people but he notices the way college interaction works so he drops out of school and creates a way for people to connect around the world, he calls it The Facebook he's tight on cash though and he sells it for 4 million dollars to Microsoft, a year later this company is renamed Facebook and is worth 25 billion dollars and Mark Zuckerberg jumps off the Golden Gate Bridge.

    • @JK4m3r0n
      @JK4m3r0n 6 років тому +138

I think Sean's main point was not about not selling The Facebook but an advice to Mark not let himself be seduced by someone with money who might take Sean's position as his advisor. It was purely a survival instinct on his part. To that end, not only Sean has resorted to promises of power and glory, which seduced Mark right away, he also made a point of mocking Eduardo at every turn so he alone would have Mark's ear.

Well, suffering does motivate people to try to leave it behind! With this movie Mark Zuckerberg, his attempt at coming out of the comfort zone, through faults of his own, failed miserably which made him fall back into what he was very good at, to feel good again. At least, that is how someone like me sympathizes with this character somewhat.
Motivation is a more suitable key to success, but motivation can be born out of many things, suffering is, without a doubt, one of them. Poor students studied hard to escape poverty is an ubiquitous example.

And that's if he earns zero dollars the rest of his life. Truth is one would work at something they enjoy that doesn't pay much and you could extend the money you have.
