The Unique Urination of Cicadas

- Unlike other small insects and mammals, cicadas urinate in jets (and not bubbles). By learning more about the critter's unique urination, Georgia Tech researchers say the findings could be used to create better robots and small nozzles.

I had no idea that cicadas urinated at all! My understanding is that they don't eat or drink once they reach adulthood, living only a few days or weeks to mate before dying. The fact that they urinate, and that billions of them are about to emerge and cover the land, makes this new discovery disturbing!
That was my understanding also for years, I guess, you live, you learn.
GRAB YOUR UMBRELLAS!!! ☔️
THEY ARE HERE!
oh, they pissin
IT TASTED LIKE SUGAR
😆😂🤣
Oh, they pissin alright!
Everybody grab your umbrellas before you go to any wooded area!!! My friends & I were definitely getting pissed on last night on the patio under the trees 😂😂 I guess I’m a little relieved it is pee afterall & not their “love juices” from mating, like I was afraid of 🫣😅
Same thing happened to me haha
They had me until the sentence about how it could apply to robotics
Pissing androids, and the correct bathrooms for them to use debate, are the wave of the future.
"infestation"... why does media keep using that word... geez
awesome
I'd rather hear the noisy cicadas than the obnoxious music.
Tyler Mac look out
They peed nonstop 😂
The more ya know
Whut
Literally just found this out 30 seconds ago and I saw a clip on Instagram. To me that is absolutely disgusting. The fact that they’re urinating just in the open but they are in so why not😢😮😅 I bet you it smell like actual human urine
Hey, um, guys?
Why in the world is the line about robotics in there? That was kind of thrown in without any context. The burden of providing that context is on you guys, I was genuinely intrigued until I had to sit and figure out what this has to do with robots
Has there been trouble with this area in robotics? Are the people studying the cicada Also into robotics? Make a connection for us please, otherwise great video:)
Hey, um, question asker?
Why not try looking into soft robotics yourself and see if you can figure out on your own what the application might be?
Robots gotta pee too.
Tyler Mac what about them
Many things in technology and engineering have been inspired by the natural world. The fact that such small animals can urinate in such a way is intriguing because it implies there's a way for such a small object to produce a stream of fluid with that velocity. I can't think of what robots would exactly require being such a small size while emitting fluid in that manner - though some practical use may come of it eventually.
This line was likely added in because these students are in a university that is focused on engineering. It's in the name: "Georgia Tech College of Engineering".
I expect that the intended audience was other students at this school, hence the lack of context here.
Millions of $$$ that could have been spent
on seniors and hard working Americans
Time you could have spent with seniors.
Hell does your money go?
I'm a senior AND a hard working American. We have learned so many useful things from the study of insects. Velcro was modeled after spider webs. Aluminum foil was invented for the space industry if I remember correctly but has been applied now for insulation also because it blocks both cold and heat. I approve of studies so long as there is no cruelty.
