To those of you who read the description: You are an excellent subscriber! :)
Jose Raul Capablanca was regarded as a chess prodigy, yet his father wanted him to maintain the "even tenor of the average boy's way in his youth." Capablanca moved to the USA in 1904 to complete his education. However, he left Columbia University in 1910 without a degree and pursued a career in chess.[3] His first international success was his clear win (+8 -1 =14) over the former world championship challenger in Capablanca-Marshall (1909). After that, he was considered a worthy contender for the title of world champion, and reigning champion Emanuel Lasker commented "Capablanca has shown himself to be a great player."
Capablanca's admirers had suggested a title challenge as early as 1908. Even prior to his first European tournament, León Paredes had suggested to Lasker that he play a match with Capablanca, but Lasker declined. Capablanca himself remained cautious. The hype surrounding Capablanca made Lasker admit that the subject got "on his nerves." Capablanca made his international tournament debut at San Sebastian (1911). He unexpectedly won 1st prize, a result even he hadn't anticipated.[9] About seven months after this success, he challenged Lasker to a title match.]

15:07 - In fact, the line is a little bit longer and complex:
Instead of ...Qd1+, black plays ...Qb1+ which leads to Kg2 Qe4+ f3! - that's the move you need to see in the beggining to know for sure that you're winning - ...Qc1+ Rxc1 Bxf6 exf6 and white is up a piece.
    If ...Rd2+ Bxd2 Qe2+ Kh3 Qxd2 Rxd8+ and black is lost.
    And if ...Qe2+ first, then Kh3 Qf1+ Kh4 Rd4+ f4 Rxf4+ Bxf4 and again, black is completely lost.

I don't understand why the pawn is poison... on 14:56 you didn't check black queen B1 check.
You get to this wired position, black can give multiple checks to the white king - and than maybe exchange the queens of the board. Not sure is useful, can't see how it loses the game.

Is it a not devolped piece if is not moved? I wonder.. Because of how strong was that black square bishop at the end.. Perhaps depends on the context.... a piece could have a lot of potencial in its initial position. If you know exactly when has to be moved as the great lasker did.

    • @Caleb-zl4wk

As he mentioned, the principal issue with doing what Lasker did (huge Lasker fan btw, Lasker sweep,) was that it allowed the white bishop free range over the board early on, which positionally translated into the endgame that we saw. The computer agrees, bringing out the bishop was the better call.

I'd hazard a guess by saying that chess is similar to science in that you make decisions only be a process of rigorous thought and based on principles (well at least you should, I don't). I also think the nature of chess scholarship is similar to science in that it evaluates positions and suggests improvements as more knowledge (better lines and moves) becomes available.
I'd also say that it is similar to science in that it is a game of perfect information: each side has access to the correct move/continuation (despite the inherent difficulty of this) in the same way that science supposes that all information necessary to evaluate the world and understand it, is available through a process of experimentation and interaction.

i hope we start the Alekhine saga next:) It's spot on after Capablanca

Absolutely. But I might add that while Alekhine won 1927 Jose definitely had a much, much better time in Buenos Aires. Antonio should talk a little about that.

    12:58 rook e1 why not qf3 🤔

Capablanca can actually take the a2 pawn. In the third variation shown by you, instead of Qd1+ he can play Qb1+, Kg2 Qe4+ and the game continues

    • @VR471
      @VR471 5 років тому +1

It's actually a draw after qb1+ but only if Capablanca plays perfect moves, otherwise black is just lost. For example, after qe4+ and f3, black would blunder the game if he goes Qe2+ instead of qc2+. Its a complicated line to calculate I guess. And Capablanca is known to be lazy to calculate if he already found a safe alternative.

Beyond weird that the World Champion in his first game with white in a title defense would come up with something like e3.

7:29 instead of Lasker rook g3, he should have played knight c5 to eliminated capablancas bishop pair. #chessprinciples

@Oissev Onos i see. I guess it is just me that placed myself in that position and was happy with a draw against Capa. Obviously Lasker has higher ambitions =)

#Suggestion for the next series, do the voting process early so that more people can vote and enjoy the ongoing series at the same time. Moreover you'll also get time for preparations and we get the next saga without much delay... This is the good stuff, and we want more of that.
