      Jordan, you are most welcome, that was my goal when I started this channel, was to come at pipe smoking at as many angles as I could there is a lot more to pipe smoking then just drawing smoke from a pipe, and I wanted to convey all the knowledge I had about each aspect of pipe smoking. 😄😄😄👍

    I just wanna say that this series of videos is one of the greatest things I've ever seen on UA-cam. I'm a cigar smoker who works in a liquor store. Last week we received a pipe tabacco delivery and I've decided to give it a go. Your videos made everything clear for me, thank you for that. I remember learning about cigars and looking here, on UA-cam for any quality videos about cigars. And ofc I've found many great UA-camrs that have a huge knowledge about cigars, but non of them made me feel so comforting about the topic and guide me step by step about everything, as you did about pipe smoking. Thank you a lot!

    This is how I build a cake in my new pipes! Works a treat! When I get a new pipe, I smoke like I normally would. Full bowl-all the way down.
    When I go to scoop the ashes into the ashtray I separate the ashes from any dottle left in the pipe. I put a pipe cleaner down the mouthpiece till it bottoms out inside the bowl. Then scoop a spoonful or two of that ash back into the bowl. Cover it with my thumb, give it a good shimmy shake and dump back out!
    The ash will stick to the residual moisture left in the bowl and harden as it dries. I do that with my first 10 or so bowls and it creates a great evenly distributed cake everytime!

      I tried all the methods mentioned in the video, my papaw taught me the honey method, so that has been around for some time. After I had smoked for awhile I learned to do just as you say here. Just smoke it, I smoke it all the way down. The only difference is I don't scoop it out, I'm left with nothing but ash, I just cover with my finger/thumb shake it all around then dump the bowl, hit it a lick or two down the stem with a pipe cleaner. I do this almost every time I smoke also.

    I must say, I'm guilty of not knowing what that noise was at first, till I saw more of your videos. You are right it's the most awful taste ever that I have the misfortune of tasting. Plus the tongue bite, I found out also, if you are using a low quality of tobacco, you get more tongue bite and the over heating tends to be a lot worse as well. So bad the overheating that it started to burn my pipe bowl, almost ruining it. Have a good day my friend, and thank you for all your wonderful help.

    In order to break in a new Savinelli do you still do the 3 punch method tamping each layer in order to break in a new pipe or just fill it to the top and smoke all the way to the bottom without tamping in your outlined method? Also, are we doing the false burn for the top layer each of these 10 times to break it in, followed by the “actual” lighting after or just light it once and smoke slowly to the bottom? Thanks for helping a newbie out. Love your content sir 👌🏻

    I usually just pack a full bowl, and smoke it, usually down to like 60% or 70, then dispose of what's left. I noticed I can see briar wood at the bottom of my pipe, around the draught hole, to build carbon cake in that spot should I just load a tiny bit and smoke that to make sure that every spot in my bowl has cake? Or should I smoke it regularly and eventually I'll see come carbon build up there. Its a pretty big bowl with thick walls so im not too worried about damaging it, but Id rather take the time to learn to do things right instead of repeating mistakes.
    Your content is always great. I was delighted to see you posting more videos in 2021. Keep up the good work sir.

    I always look forward to your advice in these videos as you have been instrumental in moving me from being a total newbie novice to one that can finally keep a bowl going, get past some of the errors we all make, and start to learn how to actually savour this. I've played with and often ruined cheap estates, cobs etc and I think we all should. I've now invested in 7 new cheap but decent savinelli and Peterson briars, and will be using the skills YOU have taught me, slowly and patiently, to get these broken in and working for me. My key take-home from you is: slow, steady, patient, practice, make mistakes, learn and finally ENJOY,
    Thank you for helping me to get here.

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  6 років тому +1

      Graham - Correct...in the beginning....but the more you smoke you will find that the key take home will become automatic, you will just automatically smoke slow, steady and with patience. When this happens you have arrived, you will then be a true pipe smoker. 👍👍👍

    • @bikkies
      @bikkies 6 років тому

      Muttnchop Piper yeah, slowing my cadence is the current challenge. Puffing like a steam train keeps it lit, sipping too slow with the breath method and it goes out from time to time. It's that balance or sweet spot that I'm seeking. One big plus though is that I'm now able to properly light pretty much any blend, whether crispy dry English or sopping wet GH aromatic. That was such an annoyance! Onwards and upwards, all the best for the new year.

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  6 років тому

      Graham - I have found that as I breathe in through my nose I lightly draw the smoke in, and as I breathe out through my nose if I lightly push the smoke I drew in back through the stem until I see a small wisp of smoke it keeps the tobacco lit, if you find that the fire is about to go out, push through a little more smoke back through the stem, stoking the fire, if you will, until you get more smoke if you Do this three or four times before you release the smoke out of your mouth you will find it easier to keep the pipe lit. 👍👍👍

    • @bikkies
      @bikkies 6 років тому

      Muttnchop Piper great stuff, thank you again. To build up a starter cake on a quality pipe for which you do not know your planned use (aro/non aro) do you agree with my thoughts of smoking an English, balkan or similar, so that you don't start your bowl surface off with strong or extreme tastes? Stuff like 1865, Presbyterian, GH no 25, some dunhills like DSM, EMP? Or does it not matter much which tobacco you use to lay down your early protecting & maybe even seasoning layers?

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  6 років тому

      Graham - I smoke 8 pipes routinely, 7 I use for non-Aromatics and 1 for Aromatics, my 7 non Aromatics I smoke strictly Virginia, Va/Par’s and English, the one Aromatic see’s only Aromatic blends, that’s one way to go. You are on the right track, my advice is to season and build carbon cake with Virginia’s and light English blends like Dunhill EMP. If you don’t want to dedicate pipes to certain blend types. 👍👍👍

    Amazing series and very informative, thank you for your clear instructions.
    One question please, I’ve seen these small metal mesh balls that some pipe manufacturers say it makes the tobacco burn more efficient and avoid excess heat. Appreciate if you can shed some light on this. Thanks!

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  5 років тому +4

      Liquid Darkness - I have never seen these, or heard of them, but here is my opinion on things like this, it’s just someone promising something so they can make a buck, if you use the breathe method of smoking that I have described in a couple of videos that’s all you need, no metal mesh balls. Pipe smoking is high enough maintenance as it is. You can try one if you like, but unless it drastically changes the way your pipe smokes, you end up abandoning it. 👍👍👍

    What a great video. What are your thought's about the "carbon" makeup in the cake? After reeming hundreds of pipes over the last 20+ years I've found the cake that is removed is a deep rich dark brown rather than black which one would expect with with carbon. I realize pipe smoking is an extreme form of unsaturated combustion so it would make sense to me that a cake is mostly carbon and unburnt tobacco.

    This series has been a great tool to improve my enjoyment of the pipe. Thank you. A quick question, can you smoke more than one bowl in a particular pipe at one sitting? Or would you recommend getting another pipe?

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  7 років тому +3

      Not quite sure what you are asking, but here is what I think you're asking. I smoke the same pipe 3 to 4 times a day, so I choose pipe A, smoke it 3 to 4 times, cleaning it between smokes, at the end of the 4th bowl I clean the stem and shank with everclear alcohol. Then I let it rest for 24 hours or more to let it dry out. 😃😃😃

    Hello! First of all, thank you for making this series! I live in Norway, where pipe smoking seems to have almost died out. Really hard to find any sound tips and advice. So thanks a lot! I have a briarwood basket pipe (Spitfire is the only name on it...) and I've been kind of lazy with making a carbon cake. I have read on other sites that the carbon cake is important to get the taste from the tobacco. What are your views on this? Is the carbon cake the alpha and omega when it comes to taste? Or is it more the packing and the charring light, etc.? I find it hard to get much other taste than smoke, and not a nice tasting smoke, just a... well, smoke-tasting smoke... Sorry for the long post! I really enjoy your videos! Regards from Oslo, Norway! :)

    • @MuttnchopPiper
      @MuttnchopPiper  7 років тому +2

      Zoltan Kramarics - The main purpose of the Carbon cake is to protect the pipe from getting to hot, where it will crack your bowl, also a thicker carbon cake the cooler the smoke. Taste doesn't really come into it, if carbon cake took on the taste of every tobacco you smoked, then it would taint the tobacco you are presently smoking, and I don't get that. 👍👍👍

      Dude nooo! Don't even start! Once you're addicted to nicotine, I suppose pipe smoking is a pretty decent way to get your nic fix, but good lord, I wish I never ever had my first cigarette. Once you have even the tiniest bit of nicotine, you're addicted and it becomes a _constant_ thought for the rest of your life. Not once will it let you go. Every day I regret that first time I stole my mom's pack of Kools and had that half a cig. I do enjoy pipe smoking, a lot, but if I didn't have the craving, I wouldn't even care. I'd much rather not have to fill that void...I mean, I never had the void before my brain soaked up that nicotine. Now I can't go a day without thinking about it. It sucks, it sucks a lot. Please take this to heart.

    OH MY GOD. I smoked a pipe in college, or tried to for a couple years freshman and sophomore year. I always thought it was spit gurgling I smoked through it. It tasted bad and that’s probably why I stopped. It was bitter. I thought it was the tobacco. I thought it was the pipe. It was a Dr Grabow and blue cavendish. I would clean it with a Kleenex or try to blow the “spit”back through (mistake). I am going to have to try again.

      I use the 3 layers, 1 - fill to the top loosely, lightly push it down until it’s about halfway down the bowl, 2 - fill it again, put push it down a little harder, 3 - fill it a third time, and push it down harder again, then light it up.

    • @MuttnchopPiper

      @@Jebemtebe oh, sorry misunderstood, she is talking about building a carbon cake, and yes you can do it that way, which is probobly a good idea, if you are new at pipe smoking it will ease you into the hobby, if you fill it all the way, you may want to stop before the tobacco is finished burning to the bottom, then you have wasted tobacco.

      Mike Ehrmantraut - I don’t have a pipe that’s quite ready to ream, and I want to make sure and do it right, it’s coming, and it won’t be long. 👍👍👍

    Should their be carbon cake on the bottom of the bowl? How important is it to get on the bottom of the bowl

      1smartperson5656 - Yes the carbon cake should be on the bottom of the bowl that’s why you smoke it all the way to the bottom, if you find it difficult to do that, then fill the bowl just half full that should make it easier. 👍👍👍
