Chris, I know this is old but you have done so much for me in learning how to properly enjoy a pipe. From an Army veteran to a Marine veteran, thank you!
One tip to maximize the use of the pipe cleaners is to cut them in half or so, so as to have 4 ends to use rather than 2 ends. This obviously is best when dealing with moderately shorter pipes rather than longer ones. Thanks a lot Muttnchop!
@@TheShredfest89 just from other videos I have seen from people apparently hearing my from him it seems he is having things going on in his life, but is doing good and from that I bet he might come back one day. Have a good day!
Something I have adopted as a practice is, after components are cleaned and I’m ready to put the pipe back together, I use a carpenter’s pencil and scribble lightly around the tenon of the stem. Graphite is a dry lubricant and cuts down on the friction as tenon slides back into mortise, diminishing long term wear from friction.
Great idea! Edd China from Wheeler Dealers actually used this trick on a Porsche 993. Grease and oil do pick up dirt with time so he used a pencil for the rear lifting spoiler that usually picks up a lot of dust from the road.
I absolutely love the content...as always...and greatly appreciate your respect for the pipe artisans' work that go into these art pieces. You are teaching far more than a hobby, my Friend. Thank you for all that you share!
I am so glad I watched your lesson because I am a new pipe smoker & I have done literally everything you said not to do, so I am extremely grateful to you my friend. Greatings from Stroudsburg pa. A wonderful channel indeed.💪😎
Hope you are well Muttonchop. Your videos are very informative. Yet what I like most is actually your delivery. Your sound like an old friend or a family member speaking to another friend or family member about how to smoke and take care of their pipe. Thank you.
Nicely thought out and pleasant watching. As a novice I’m hoovering up as much advice and knowledge as I can and I have to say this is one of the best videos I’ve stumbled on. Thanks for your time and wise advice.
Thumbs up Muttnchop. I'm switching from smokeless to pipes for less tobacco skin contact so this was a perfect video to help me maintain which ever pipe I buy first
The story about carbon cake and the ashes is really true. I'm living near Düsseldorf/Germany and I am a customer of the shop "Linzbach" in Düsseldorf for many years. The lady who ran the shop, Mrs. Schmitz, was sent to London at the age of fifteen by her father. She became an employee of Dunhill and learned the craftsmanship of pipe making. She became a passionate pipesmoker and cigar connoisseur too. Mrs. Schmitz told a similar story. Gather only the fine grey ashes into a small shell and put it into the bowl, shake it as you've shown us in the video. Keep it there and throw out the loose ashes before smoking the next time. That's the perfekt way of breaking in a pipe. Don't smoke to the bottom, throw the rest out. When she saw may astonished face she turned to me and said "Sir, you want to enjoy your tobacco and not harm yourself " with her typical smokey sounding voice 😉 I recommend a visit in this shop if you ever will come to Germany and the Rhine area. But keep away from the "Düsseldorf Altstadt". Thanks to our f****** government it's not a safe place anymore. Happy puffin and take care.
Two week pipe smoker and wished I watched your video prior to abusing my pipe. Got two more coming that will make 4 pipes total for now. Won't make the same mistake twice. Thank you for making this video
I just got into pipe smoking 3 days ago and have been going through all your videos to learn the ropes. Thanks for all the work you put into them and I hope you're doing well.
A little tip so you can maximize your use of your pipe cleaners is to use any cheap fingernail/toenail clippers to cut off the ends of the pipe cleaners and use more of length of them. You barely used it and threw it in the trash. Works for me. Hope this helps.
My first night, my sleep schedule got broken because of this passion, my first beginner pipe kit is on the way to me(so excited)... and I'm watching everything I can and find about this art and passion, and I am willing to do and (sacrifice) more for what I love. I'll buy 2 more pipeys after I get to know the procedure and from A to Z correctly and become friends with her. Be the word between us... this ``object`` deserves more respect and kindness than some people, sorry, but it's reality.
I’m a long time cigar smoker but have been thinking about gettin back into pipes because my first time trying was a total disaster. Thanks for your videos 🇺🇸
I have seen somewhere that after you clean the pipe, take a little touch of olive oil and just polish the whole pipe from the outside, leave for a couple of hours, then just use a cloth to remove the oil. It left my pipe just glossy and shinny. Happy Piping.
I very typically smoke while out taking a walk, bbq’s, or at a bar. I usually will enjoy a pipe and then tap the bowl of my pipe firmly on my shoe. Everything comes out and it’s either ready for another smoke or to be put away. I will disassemble and clean with a pipe cleaner usually the next day, and replace the wood filter if needed :)
Loving your videos, sir! I'm a college student and just starting to dabble but you've taught me everything I need to know already! I looked for your facebook but didn't seem to find it? Regardless, thank you so much for making your videos! Educational and enjoyable, you seem like such a sincere person!
Please don't pull your bit nearly straightly out of the wooden piece, it will damage your pipe. Twist it to the right side and pull gently will be better for the pipe because the hole in the pipe is drilled with a rotation to the right side. But I'm not willing to argue with you. Your videos are great and showed me a few different options and I've got a completely new way to look at a pipe. Greetings from Germany.
If you take a pencil and coat the part of the stem that tucks into the wood bowl with the graphite, it helps when removing and installing the stem when cleaning
I sometimes put the stem inside hot water and kinda wash the tar away. Plus I feel the tobacco hole should be clean. So, I clean it every now and then using a knife like tool. I am always careful not to hurt my pipe I just try to remove the tar and the coat.
Thank you so much for your thorough videos. I am learning a lot from you. One question though, after I clean my mouth piece if I stick it in my mouth without the pipe attached and inhale I still get a little taste not pleasing to me
Not sure how you feel about this, but I use beeswax, and every few weeks rub my pipe gently down with it. Beeswax has a low melting point as the pipe heats up it goes into the pores of the wood to moistureize it, and protect the whole pipe. It is an overall protectant.
Oh damn, I have just been using a regular pipe cleaner after the smokes for the day with no alcohol. I only do the alcohol and bristle treatment for the "deep cleaning" but maybe I should be doing this instead.
what do you use to clean the outside of the smoking bowl? i heard they use olive oil to clean it and gives a nice polish. i smoked my pipe the other day and noticed residue or charring on the outside bowl. the stain is right where i held it between my thumb and finger.
Would these methods be applicable on a pipe made from dried corn cob? I've had mine for a couple months now and resin has been accumulating into my bit to some extent, making it harder to smoke and I decided that now would be a good time to learn to clean it
For whatever reason I found you initially annoying, probably got to do with my own insecurities. I have now watched loads of your video clips and have grown to not only like what I see - but to actually appreciate what a font of knowledge you actually are. Having replayed many I have found that I miss quite a lot of what your teaching and go over them again and again. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain very clearly the art of pipe smoking. A huge thank you Dear fellow from a grateful UK novice new to pipe smoking .
Thanks for the informative video. I would occasionally use my pipe and hadn’t really thought about cleaning it til now that its sludgey 😅. im obviously a newb. Anyhoo, i have a cheap pipe, and gonna give it a good cleaning now. It has like a straw roll inside. What is the purpose of that per se? Filter? Should i remove and leave off, or buy new somewhere?
arrepuess - if the filter is filthy, then yes and throw it away. It’s a personal choice if you want to use a filter or not, so my suggestion would be to buy some more filters and smoke your pipe with, and without the filter to determine which you like better. 👍👍👍
Quick question. Does the same cleaning work on meerschaum pipes? Do I want a cake in my meerschaum? Or should I keep the cake to a minimal. Any advise will help. Thanks!
Hi, I'm Italian and I apologize for any mistakes. I would like to ask you a question: during the construction phase of the carbon cake, especially on the bottom, is it necessary to go with the pipe cleaner, or should I just remove the ash as you did in the video? Thanks for the reply
Chris, I know this is old but you have done so much for me in learning how to properly enjoy a pipe. From an Army veteran to a Marine veteran, thank you!
Same goes for me! I’m a new pipe smoker and he’s been an amazing mentor throughout this pipe smoking journey
been smoking for about 50 years and this guy has taught me things i never knew and upped my pipe smoking pleasure ten fold. thanks so much.

TheNunakun - great tip my friend, thanks for passing that along to the club. 👍👍👍

Excellent advice!
I wish you still made videos. Thank you for the ones you made

@@bingcrosbyfanman2774 why do you say that?

Ah genius. Those of us who play violin know about this trick for our tuning pegs but I never thought about it for a pipe stem.
Wow that’s a fantastic idea! Us guitar players use graphite for nuts and bridge saddles. Never would have thought of it for this purpose.
Great idea! Edd China from Wheeler Dealers actually used this trick on a Porsche 993. Grease and oil do pick up dirt with time so he used a pencil for the rear lifting spoiler that usually picks up a lot of dust from the road.
Am new pipe smoker and really learned a lot from you ... thanks sire👍👍👍👍
Yes as am I, and I've done every thing he said absolutely not to do.
New to smoking from a pipe and I love the act and now looking into its care I really appreciated all of the advice

Lesson learned. Should have watched this video BEFORE starting to smoke it a week ago. I did EVERYTHING what I was NOT supposed to do.
Interesting! I use good rum, brandy or whiskey as a cleaning solution...
Then again I did switch to non-aromatics some time ago...

Do they flavor your smoke at all?
