    Oh, the irony that the man behind those steel wheels on steel rails was named Paul Tyreman! XD

    16:37 "when running under double yellows try to match your speed to the train in front" - not something that's considered good practice these days!

    Some nice shots of Didcot 'A' Power Station there (towers and chimney). Now in the process of being demolished.

    It is interesting to note that coasting is encourage in railway driving, as oppose to road driving where control of the road vehicle is an issue in such situation.

    • @ChrisCooper312
      @ChrisCooper312 8 років тому +5

      Coasting in neutral or with the clutch down is bad, but coasting by lifting off the power whilst keeping the drive engaged is fine, and actually saves more fuel (since the fuel injection will be shut off and the engine will just be kept spinning from the wheels, whilst with no drive fuel will be used to idle the engine). Since trains don't have a clutch or gears (with a few exceptions), that's not an issue. Actually, with the old DMUs that had gears, there was a specific instruction to coast in 4th (top), although that was down to protecting the gearbox, not control.

    Ever since the opening of the eurotunnel you would have thought that any government with any sense would have legislated articulated and the larger lorries off UK roads as well as providing incentives for using rail freight services.Obviously there is a place for commercial vehicles to move merchandise from the rail depot to the store.For such purposes though smaller vehicles could be employed and for premises such as vast supermarkets or shopping malls it would pay for the builders and operators to site new premises at sites with rail access.Can't see it happening though,as that would be logical.

    All my old man got for a lifetime of service including being one of the first staff to arrive at St Johns and going like 2 decades plus without a sick day and forced early retirement having worked virtually every day off as well from the 50's to the 90's was a crappy clock of dubious quality... He was promised Cuxton's starter signal when it got replaced... never got it despite him rebuilding in the 70's Cuxton and Snodland boxes including fitting a flushing toilet and practically rebuilt Snodland... both listed... I spoke to someone who spoke to someone at Network Rail whose attitude when asked about the various rebuilt signal boxes was pretty poor. When he died some years past, his employer after BR/NR Swanage Railway put on memorial trains and had actual mourning for the bloke.

    A lot of sense here, I always just pottered along on adverse signals, there was no point in winding up to full speed and then having to brake heavily. This was especially so on the route I drove as we still had Buffet Cars back then. Our trains ran on 750V DC live rail, and we too had the controller where if you ran straight up to notch 4 you'd to return to "off" before opening up if you wanted to notch back ! Expect those old AC units used camshaft controllers like alot of ours did south of the river. Happy days though. Glad I'm retired now. Couldn't hack all this computerised plastic rolling stock that's used presently or all the buck - passing and back - stabbing that sadly seems a feature of today's railway scene.

    1.rst Hi 1990s paul, yes voice and face is same, especially if you look at the central face
    2.nd those 14 seconds each distance are worth a lot if you were delayed 2 minutes and got 8 station untill you are likely to loose even more time after having the signaler forget you for 34.6 seconds at a junction further back

      A friend had a bike repair shop, with a BMW franchise. One day, just one too many BMW owners peed off him and his mechanics with their "I'm a BMW owner - kiss my feet, peasant!" attitude, so he contacted BMW and told them he was quitting. He said the sheer disbelief was comical - along the lines of "WE withdraw franchises, but NOBODY quits BMW!!"
      He said when he told his mechanics, they took him down the pub for the evening, and wouldn't let him buy a single round!

    Once the train I was on started to coast, but the train was going too slow and stopped short about 30m of the platform

    No wonder they got rid of the slam doors after seeing the doors being flung open when entering the platform.

    • @jackx4311
      @jackx4311 Рік тому

      Yeah, I mean - THOUSANDS of people were killed by them every week . . . the platforms were literally dripping blood . . . oh, wait - no, they weren't! Because people used their eyes and their brains and stood clear, rather than glueing all their attention on how many likes their Snapchat posts were getting . . .

    Slam doors wernt dangerous at all it's the idiotic people with no brains and Brussels no doubt that got them withdrawn, these were heavier than more modern units thus rolled for longer and much more comfortable and an airy environment 310/312 unit were subsequently withdrawn well before their time it's a sad story as far as I'm concerned being a rail enthusiast and no complete unit has been saved for preservation with I thinks a disgrace!

    • @riverhuntingdon6659
      @riverhuntingdon6659 9 років тому +3

      +Jay Gordon Too right. The "elf'n'safety" nazis struck again. There's nothing to stop someone opening most car doors at speed. I miss the old DC MK1 EMU stock we had down here, and went for a ride on the 310/312's, and found them very nice indeed. Such a pity none were saved and that many MK1 units that WERE earmarked for preservation have been either scrapped ( 1705 and 1698 come to mind ) or allowed to rot. The Clacton units were wasted too. All that expense on removing blue asbestos and converting MK1 loco-hauled coaches to suit. Must've cost a bomb. As far as I know some of the 312 sets were built as late as 1978 ! What a waste.

    • @tobysummers471
      @tobysummers471 9 років тому +2

      One 312 unit 312792 has been saved in nse livery but all the 310s have gone and been scrapped. One 310 unit survived into the 21st century by hitachi converted to dc third rail operation as part of the v train. Sadly there were no attempts to save it and it was scrapped in 2007. As for slam doors Chiltern Railways has retained a few class 121 bubble cars used for a shuttle service from Princes Risborough to Aylesbury. These units had to be fitted with door locking to comply with modern safety standards. It really was a waste as some of these units were only built in 1978 and were withdrawn by 2004 having a short life expectancy

    • @ChrisCooper312
      @ChrisCooper312 8 років тому +1

      Only parts of 312792 survived, the driving trailers I think. Glad I'm not the only one who thought withdrawing them was a waste, especially given that over 10 years later, older 313s are still in service (and only just being talked about being replaced).

      And yet it's perfectly acceptable on the Paris Métro for the doors to be released before the train has stopped.

      “Slam doors weren’t dangerous” is the comment of someone who’s never had the door opened in traffic and striking the train going the other way leading to the window opening bar becoming embedded in the headrest of one of the seats of the other train. Fortunately the seat was unoccupied.
      It’s also the comment of someone who’s never had a door open in traffic where the person leaning on it fell out and was turned into something resembling a cheap lasagna.
      It’s also the comment of someone who’s never seen an open door strike a person on the platform causing life changing injuries.
      It’s also the comment of someone who never saw someone amputate their finger because the door was slammed shut by someone who didn’t check that the other person was clear of the opening.
      Slam doors are potentially lethal, can cause permanent serious injuries, and quite rightly have been outlawed.
      If you make misuse possible, misuse will occur.
