I've always thought that the reason ppl love Jo so much it's bc she is "not like other girls" but Amy represent everything those type of girls hate and gets everything she wanted because she was smart, not handed to her as a lot people been saying, when in fact Jo got away with what she wanted while Amy had to sacrifice her passion bc she knew no one else in her family would do, even the fan favorite Jo, getting with Laurie it's the least that her character deserved, I love her character so much bc she is driven and ambitious but takes care of their loved ones, she is smart, gorgeous and has an amazing taste in beauty, the full package, Amy always deserved better and finally people are seeing it

When Jo writes her love letter to Laurie she says “My dear teddy, I miss you more than I can express. I used to think that the worst fate was to be a wife, I was young and stupid. But now I have changed. The worst fate is to live my life without you in it.” I think Jo finds it hard to express her feelings without going against her believes/ideas about what women should and shouldn’t be in the world. Like when Jo tells her sister Meg that she doesn’t need to get married to John and that she will get bored after 2 years. Later on Jo telling her mum that she is sick of women having their only purpose of to love. Jo realised that women are more than that. To all the people saying Jo felt ‘lonely’ and needed to fill a void that’s why she confesses to Laurie her love that was not the reason. When Jo left to go to New York she left her sisters behind. And when her sister Beth got sick she came back in a heart beat. Stopping everything that she was doing her dreams and ambition for her sister. When her sister Amy burned her papers Jo got angry at Amy and even said she will never ever forgive her and then when her sister nearly drowned she went back to talking to her in a heart beat realising that her sister was more important. Similarly as soon as she rejects Laurie she kept writing to him but he was the one that was not answering to her letters. Jo truly did care for him. She just didn’t have herself figured out yet. Jo thought a women cannot marry and pursue her dreams at the same time in the end she realises she can when she marries the professor. She realises this before however and wanted to tell Laurie by confessing to him through the letter but it was to late. Jo wanted it to be Laurie that she marries. Jo even admitted to her mum that when she gets angry her anger can blind her. Like when she rejected Laurie because of her anger blinding her to thinking women should be independent and never married, but she doesn’t realise women can be both. Jo is a strong willed character who refuses to back down but then she does on all of these occasions she does it for the people that she loves. She did that when she rejected Laurie. She was angry because she had dreams she wanted to pursue and marriage was not on her radar back then. However after loosing her sister for good this time she realises the mistake she made rejecting Laurie. She realises death is her worse enemy and it can come in the way of things even when she thinks she is in control. She steers the wheel of her life, she is independent, unmarried, in New York writing doing everything she ever wanted but death still has a way of ruining things. When she comes to this realisation she cannot bear to loose Laurie in the same way without telling him how she truly feels. Because Jo finally realises that the love she holds for him is greater than whatever it is she wanted to do as a single women.

since before this movie, like since the book ppl have hated Amy/Laurie bc the readers at the time (and long since) wanted Jo/Laurie (especially since Laurie was many readers' crush and Jo was their self-insert) LM Alcott know this and, since (1) she wanted her heroine unmarried and (2) she didn't want to make Jo/Laurie cannon to just please the fans self-insert fantasies, she stuck to her wishes to NOT make them a couple. Bc of pressure to have her heroine married, she decided to have Jo marry Bhaer - an old, pudgy, not-at-all handsome man (unlike in the movie) - out of Spite. It's been a while since i read Little Women, but as a middle schooler I remember feeling like Amy and Laurie came out of left field. it came out of nowhere!! It definitely felt like a pair-of-the-spares moment and this is probably bc of all of Alcott's drama with her publisher. When i read it, i did not know about the publisher stuff, while it did NOT make me hate Amy (as some readers did) i was very confused by Alcott's decision.
one reason i LOVE Greta Gerwigs adaptation is because she spends time showing how Amy and Laurie fell in love and why they work. which, in turn, gives the viewer a better understanding of why Amy/Laurie doesn't make sense - they are Platonic Soulmates. also Bhaer is an only slightly older, handsome man which makes Jo/Bhaer much cuter instead of Infuriating and kinda creepy.

@@boudouroubou9790In the book Jo did not write that letter that is shown in the 2019 film saying she wants him back . It was just a dramatic device to up the tension and suspense. Jo may have written to Laurie while he was in Europe, but it was not to say she had changed her mind. Actually in the book Laurie writes one last letter to Jo while he is overseas asking her to reconsider her refusal. She writes back to Laurie, still saying no. Despite her growing loneliness Jo still knows that they would not work as a couple. After receiving that letter Laurie realizes he has to move on.

You’ll LOVE the book. There’s so much more of a back story to Amy and Laurie, they also have a huge bond as teenagers (like he went to visit her each week when she was sent to Aunt March’s when Beth was sick). So, at least to me, (because I know there were other interpretations of the book) it didn’t feel out of nowhere when they fell for each other as adults. And it also made me realize Amy wasn’t simply a second choice, but someone Laurie developed feelings for over time. Ugh they’re just amazing together!

In the book she was a second choice. He didnt develop any romantic feelings towards Amy until a few months after they met un Europe. The author was trying to give an ending that was a bit uncomfortable, because she didnt want the readers thinking that marriage was the ultimatest goal. It Is even noticeable how Tedu and Jo have a special bond even when they are married adults. AND the movie changed a lot of things to make ir more plausible. I mean, they have a developing in the book, but it still kind of weird

@@juanaabadiebottcher5508 the author had same feelings on marriage as Jo did, hence why Amy who had different views than Jo was somewhat shown in negative light for she was everything the author despised in women. She didn't want Jo to marry at all and Jo was basically an imagery of author herself. Unfortunately publishers forced her to make Jo fall in love. I think Amy was never the villain per say, she was just the person author had prejudices against, and in this movie they decided to overlook that and include great speeches about 'women in that era' so that audience could understand their decision.

    • @summerchic30

Juana Abadie Bottcher The book is about the lives of these four women, that includes their relationships (and all of those relationships, not just romantic). I responded saying she would love the book based on Chanelle’s appreciation of Amy because there is so much more depth to the character in the book, as well as a much broader depiction of Amy’s relationship with Laurie. Amy was not his second choice, the love Laurie had for Jo was an innocent, pure and childlike love that he misinterpreted it as romantic. The love Laurie develops for Amy has depth, passion and maturity. Amy pushes Laurie to be the kind of man he wants to be. As children Laurie is brotherly and protective over Amy and infatuated with Jo, after Jo turns Laurie down he receives the closure he needs and is able to notice Amy and the two essentially switch places. He is so smitten with Amy that he writes an opera about her, without even realizing it. Louisa never intended for Jo to marry, that was what her publishers requested, but that has no baring on Amy and Laurie’s storyline. It was never going to be Jo for Laurie. Louisa didn’t write to scare her readers about marriage (but to show that women’s lives are much deeper and fuller than just their romantic relationships) and she certainly didn’t kill Beth off because she “lacked ambition”- that was based on the actual death of Louisa’s sister Lizzie. I know Amy is villainized frequently, I think unjustly for everything but the book burning, but it’s worth noting that Amy wasn’t a gold digger before falling in love with Laurie, she was a woman who was willing to sacrifice her happiness for the security of her family.

I just had some things to add. Firstly, Amy actually worked to go to Europe. She spent a lot of time with Aunt March and was actually pleasant, whereas in the book we know that Jo was actually quite rude to Aunt March at times. Secondly, Amy was actually very good at art, but at the wrong time. We can see in one of the scenes in the movie that her painting was very realistic whereas the others' were very angular and different to hers. Her embarrassment when she sees it and realises is really sad because we can see how yet again she doesn't truly fit in to her environment. Her sisters are very romantic whereas she is a realist. Her painting is realistic whereas the others' isn't. Finally, I think it's important to note that while she did do some immature, spiteful things as a child she matures beautifully into a capable, pragmatic, ambitious young woman who selflessly does what needs to be done. People hate on her goals but, like Meg says, "just because my dreams are different than yours doesn't mean they're unimportant." Anyway yea Amy's very underrated, suits Laurie really well, and I love her.

@@boudouroubou9790 but she never said she had romantic feelings for him. She never saw him as a romantic companion out of pure romantic love. She said that she made a mistake in rejecting him BECAUSE she was lonely. BECAUSE she wanted to be loved. I'm not saying she should have stayed a spinster and that she was never destined for romantic love or marriage, but she didn't love Laurie in that way. She made it incredibly clear that the only reason why she considered marrying Laurie was because she didnt want to be alone. Marmie had to ask her several times if she loved him, and her only response was "I care more to be loved". Of course she loves Laurie, in her own way. Of course Jo and Laurie have a phenomenal connection. But it isn't romantic. And it makes complete sense why Laurie thought Jo was the one for him, and why he spent so much time bitterly pining for her. Jo was the closest person to him. He related to her the most. He spent the most time with her. Years of his childhood was spent by her side, and the way he differed from Jo was that he always knew he wanted marriage, to spend his life with someone he loves. Jo was the option that made the most sense, because he DID love her. He just didn't realize at the time that it wasn't the kind of love that suited marriage. He said himself "i will always love you Jo, but with Amy it's different". He lived and grew as a person and came to realize what real romantic love was, and he found that with Amy. Jo was always right, Jo and Laurie would have never suited each other as husband and wife. They are soulmates, but not romantically. It's not realistic to think that two people who connect on a deep level HAVE to end up together as a couple. Laurie and Jo got the happy endings that they deserved.

For someone who has never actually read Little Women or seen the past movies, you have a remarkable insight into these characters and what makes them tick. I actually agree with you. This is NOT a love triangle at all. Laurie and Jo are best friends. They love each other, but Jo makes it VERY clear to Laurie that she JUST considers him to be a friend....a brother, even. She loves him, but she's not IN love with him. Jo has very clear dreams and aspirations for her life. She wants to be a writer. She wants to be independent and find her own way in the world. And as you said, she is clinging to her childhood. She doesn't want her family to change. She doesn't want to grow up and get married. And a relationship with Laurie that goes beyond friendship would mean Jo having to sacrifice that part of herself and she's not willing to do that. She knows that if she agrees to marry him, neither one of them would be truly happy. With Amy, when Laurie finds her as a young woman in Europe, I DO believe its true love. But he doesn't win her love immediately. No, he has to prove himself worthy before he wins her heart. She doesn't want to be the woman Laurie SETTLES for just because Jo rejected his suit. And she doesn't want a man-child who gaggles along and doesn't earn his keep. Since she was a child, Amy has known EXACTLY what she wants. She wants to marry a rich man so she can have a secure life and take care of her family. Meg chose to marry John (who was not a rich man) Beth couldn't marry because of her illness and Jo WOULDN'T marry (until she met her Mr. Bhaer) so Amy feels its her duty to marry well and take care of her family. Amy and Laurie are a good match because not only does he fulfill her criteria for a suitor (as his family is very wealthy and well-respected), he also believes in her dreams. He sees her wish to be an artist and supports her in living that dream. And of course, he IS a member of the March family, so he wants to take care of them too.

I especially loved the way Amy saw Laurie at his worst and called him out on it. She helped him wake up and grow up. Because she loves him and cares for him. I love Jo to death but Amy is the one who can put Laurie back together.
And Jo foreshadowed it by saying he was going to find someone who would make him better as a person, a respected strong woman who will love him for him.
That's why I ship Amy and Laurie so hard, they make each other better.
At the end it was clear Jo didn't love him romantically, she was lonely and missed him as a friend. And that's what Laurie was to her, her best friend.
I love this movie so much. I'm so glad Amy and Laurie got together, and Jo was cool about it. I live for these three.

I'm indifferent with the pairing between Amy and Laurie but it stems in my opinion that Amy could do better. Not because I don't love Laurie but I think that he was not good enough for her at the start. But he NEEDED someone like Amy to push him forward and be realistic with his life to come unlike Jo who at the time was not ready to move forward with her life.
Even when I read the book, I always imagined Jo and Laurie having this friendship kind of relationship. What I hear from people was that Jo loved Laurie more than that so when I read it, I tried to find the clues that made that fact true but I really couldn't. Laurie was right to realized that he loved Jo a different way than he loved Amy. He misinterpret his love for their friendship with true love which we can't blame him for since he was a young man.

Wait. I remembered that Amy earned that spot with Aunt March. Jo thinking it was for Aunt Match’s own good would read to her things that SHE liked and would bitch about it later on to anyone who would hear. Do you think Aunt March wouldn’t catch on? Also, Amy would read things that Aunt March wanted no matter what it was, try to speak and listen to her point of view even though she disliked it. Amy’s later emotional intelligence is through the roof and cottons to a lot of things hinted in the undercurrent of society.

Amy has always been a popular character. It's some kind of internet b.s. to say she's hated. that's just Jo stans - and naturally a lot of internet journalists are Jo stans - thinking all Little Women readers are Jo fans. Not the same thing. Jo stans and fans of the book are not the same thing. Amy and Laurie were my favorite part of the book since I was a child. It was obvious Jo and Laurie didn't belong together. Amy WAS very very popular - it's just Jo stans that hate her. When there was less Amy i the Little Women sequels, Louisa May Alcott had to explain that since her sister May (Amy) had died, it was harder to write Amy without her input. She was forced to explain because fans were complaining not enough Amy. She has never been the least popular sister. It's just Jo stans who are always pressed.

@@boudouroubou9790 Entirely disagree with you here. Jo didn't reject Laurie because she was proud and didn't want to marry. She simply knew that their personalities would not make for a healthy *romantic* relationship. Unlike the Professor, Laurie never really challenged Jo to be the best she could be. And Jo never really encouraged Laurie to be more mature the way that Amy did.

I totally agree with you!!! You know, when I read the books, The Little Women and the Good Wives for the first time, I really felt disappointed that Jo and Laurie didn't end up together. I shipped them from the beginning. However something in me told me that what happened was right. Amy and Laurie did belong to each other. As Laurie says in the movie, "Amy keeps him under check". Jo may have been Laurie's best friend and I truly adore their friendship but I must agree that Amy was a perfect life partner for him! And I don't know why people hate Amy for 'taking' Laurie? It was Jo who rejected him at first! Amy helped Laurie become a matured man and as you said, she accepted Laurie for who he was. Trust me, Jo has always been one of my favourite characters....even I was furious at Amy when she burnt Jo's book....but I also believe that each and every character had their own faults. And that was what made each of them all the more relatable to us. So I am really happy for Amy and Laurie and Jo too who also married Friedrich Bhaier....as you said, a man who could handle her outgoing spirit. And last but not the least you did an amazing job and I loved this video!! Hat's Off to you pal!!!👍👍

But i’ve Been rewatching the scenes of them recently and I see now why people see them as just friends or like siblings. I also think I shipped them because Laurie really liked jo, I don’t know if he loved her but yeah I think cause he liked her more than a friend, I liked them together if that makes sense. But yeah I see now why they wouldn’t of been good together. Ok so now about Amy, after watching the movie, I really didn’t like her😂 especially when she burned jo’s Stuff. She just came off as a mean and cruel person to me. But I never knew she was just 13 then. Still what she did was horrible, but we’ve all done some stuff to our siblings (especially when we were kids) knowing it would hurt them so I do get it. Also idk why I was so against amy, i’m actually the youngest in my family💀 I guess I was never really jealous of my siblings so that’s probably why I didn’t relate or understand amy. But also I didn’t realize she had so much weight on her shoulders, like she was Only 13 and her aunt was already saying she had to marry someone rich like that’s sad. Yes amy was a brat sometimes, but she was just a kid back then. When she got older she definitely got more mature which is very good. And yeah I also feel very sad about how amy always loved Laurie but he was always hanging with jo so he never realized amy was the one for him. And I can see why amy thought Laurie just wanted to be with her because he couldn’t have jo, I probably would’ve thought that too, so I don’t blame her. I’m actually kinda upset now about how long it took Laurie to realized he loved amy💀. But okay, I think also one of the reasons why I wasn’t a fan of amy and Laurie was because to me in the movie, they really didn’t have a lot of scenes together, like they did kinda made it seem like jo and Laurie would end up together that’s why I was so confused at first on why they didn’t get together. And amy and laurie’s Relationship just seemed so rushed in the movie, like especially the proposal part. I’m thinking of reading the book though cause people say it talks more about amy and laurie’s Relationship so i’m sure i’ll Understand even more. But yeah I’m starting to love amy and Laurie together now:) i’m Really glad i’m Finally understanding why everyone loves them. Thank you again girly! Truly!❤️

When I first read the book I was 11 and I wanted to be like Jo so bad, but then I read it again when I was 20 and I realized that I’m actually more Amy than Jo. I was the worst brat as a teen (just like Amy an Jo with their anger explotions), but at some point we all mature a become better people and better at understanding what we have to do. So, as an adult, I think just like you, even when I wanted Jo and Laurie to be together when I was eleven.

I was angry the first time I read the book as I SHIPPED Jo & Laurie but after 3 years reading the book and recently watching the movie, I've grown to relate with Amy. Well I can't draw/paint at all, I'm not artsy but on personality level and kind of person I'm becoming, I think I understand, respect and relate to Amy more. I think when I was 12, I aspired to be like Jo, I wanted to be Jo, she was an ideal human in my eyes.

Amy is a very relatable character and her motivations in life, and what she wants and who she is is very very relatable and reminiscence of a lot of people as they grow

YES. I was reluctant to see 2019 little women bc I hated the book/movies as a kid but now I realize that was because… i’m actually an amy and thought jo’s attitude sucked lol. My checkmate point in this argument is that honestly? I do not think Jo was ever attracted to men. Anything that may have been read as attraction to Laurie was likely envy of the freedom he had as a man.

If Amy have a little crush with Laurie, will not care is Laurie is acting selfish, but she loves him and wants him to be smart and mature, so that is why she calls him out when he is doing the wrong, she is not blind by his love, while Laurie saw Jo and never comment or question any of Jo actions just follow and thought like many of us that Jo is charismatic and just a free spirit girl.

I've been watching a few vids about the Little Women 2019 and as someone who hasn't watched previous iterations of the films either, I think that Greta Gerwig and Florence Pugh worked great together to make the film more sympathetic to Amy so we could understand her perspective better. Be Kind Rewind did a great comparison video on all of the films which I really recommend!
Anyways your points are all correct and we should all stan Amy and Laurie

Thanks a lot for your opinion! It's totally realistic and true and precise. I watched it today and also needed someone to discuss with! People who are older and went through some heartbreak and friend zone experience will understand that staying friends is so much more cool than be disappointed with someone you adored. Jo loved him too she said at propasal scene that she also tried to love him and even from the very beginning she understood what he wanted to say, so she isn't cruel or smth she is just honest with the one who loved too. She doesn't want him to be unhappy. And any love and admiring never ends. The one you love will always be in your heart, they will never forget each other, it's aching but romantic anyway. It's better to be soulmates or friends. Thank u one more time! You are cool and inspiring! Love from belarus=)

In the 1994 version Amy literally looked like she was 8 when they met Laurie and he looked 18 😭
That's why I personally felt weird about this couple, the casting was not very good...in the 2019 version they don't look weird together though, so I can definitely get behind it!

I think the reason why people hated Amy so much in the book burning scene was because they had an old actress playing that scene. Amy was supposed to be a kid doing kid things. I love Florence but the scene didn't convey that child like energy enough. People got mad at Amy like she was a grown woman already when she was just a kid

Another thing to note is that Joe never loved Laurie romantically. During Laurie's proposal, she says that she doesn't love him in that way and that they would not work together. Yes, she wanted to marry Laurie later on in the movie, but it was only because she was lonely and wanted to be loved (she literally says that). Even her mom calls her out and says that it is not the same as loving someone. Not once did she say that she loved him so that is why I think it makes sense that they didn't end up together.
One other point is that the previous movies made it feel like there was something between Jo and Laurie when there wasn't, and they never explored Amy and Laurie's relationship.

This is such a great analysis of the characters and relationships in the book and you have put me infinitely more into the Amy/Laurie side of things. Couldn't put my finger on it until now, and you just explained it so well. Also, this video is just a delight to watch!

okay so i was amy in a little women play i did a few years back and i consumed myself in her character. i relate to her the most. so many of the people i was doing the it with said how much my character was their least favorite and i’d always be like how?! she’s literally the realist in the family everyone needs someone to keep them grounded. i think this film did an amazing job of showing how amy matured from starting at age 20, instead of 13. also i’ve always wanted amy and laurie together she’s helped him realize so much to not waste his life away and people hate on her for caring about him i just don’t understand they’re both perfect for each other!!! so many people in the theater were getting mad when jo turned laurie down, i was just like are y’all blind?! but yea you did an amazing job at explaining everything i was thinking!

tbh for the 94 version I did root for Jo Laurie, but for this new version it gave more insight on amy and laurie so I can see them finally as a couple
