I love all of the videos on quail I just got my first three birds and I have them In a dog crate right now but I’m building cage for them and your garden videos have helped me with my garden. And this was a great video I was trying to find a way to make a nice waterer
I’ve looked at all the videos and I found yours to be my best fit and it worked just as you described. I made an adjustment with combining 5 cages to all work. Thanks Chris. You rock
Chris, kudos to you! Your video style and delivery are so very easy to understand and you always make sure to provide examples of the topics you are discussing. My husband and I are new to quail. We were "gifted" 3 quail a month ago - a mated pair of Cotournix and a single Bobowhite male. (The balance of the hens were eaten by the local fox). I was able to buy 5 young straight run Cotournix chicks locally, which are in with the Bobowhite, who is much calmer than the adult male Cotournix quail. After finding you on the web, we have our 8' x 2' quail cage (modified slightly from your most recent coop building video), a watering system (also from your video) and are incubating eggs in hopes of expanding the flock, using the base stock of 3 birds were given. I even bought Listerine for the first time in my life (to prepare the eggs for incubation) The eggs should hatch in a week. At any rate, we are really enjoying the quail and are looking forward to having a few more around so we can get some on the BBQ!
Thank you so much for the kind comments. I am so glad that you find my videos helpful. Congrats on the new birds, sounds like you are well on your way to lots more. :)
Thank you. I use a float but I love the idea of a vertical piece of transparent tubing to check the level. Beats knocking on the bucket or opening it... I learn a lot watching so many of your videos.
I've just started keeping quails and this guy knows hes stuff . thanks for all the tips you share with us . much appreciated.you show great conference on your videos cheers
I built a similar system using your previous videos on this, but instead of hose, I used actual 1/2” pvc pipe with elbows to get down to where the cups are. Mine also leaked at the seams, but a few beads of silicone did the trick. Great tutorial Chris!
Chris I'm loving the quail videos. My first attempt at quail should be coming out of the incubator in 8 or 9 days. One slight modification I made on this project: PVC fittings and adapters are ridiculously expensive compared to PVC pipe. I eliminated the T connectors by drilling and threading holes and screwing the water cups directly into 3/4" PVC pipe. It cut a few dollars off the cost of the project and eliminated 2/3 of the connections that could leak.
Thanks alot for making this video for us, and clearly listing the supplies needed in description. Needed something easier to assemble while other half is working out of state. This is greatly appreciated! I can rock this out on my own. 🤗
Thanks! I had been using the bucket type thing with the dish around the bottom. The water got dirty and I lost a large bit of water as well, I’ll make sure to do this before I have to go back to school :). Great video man
Try drilling large holes (for the bulkhead here) in reverse. Usually works better for PVC (learned from doing lots for a large aquaponics system). Thanks for the videos! So helpful!
May I suggest putting a shut off valve instead of an end cap on the pipe. I ALWAYS do this to allow me to do a weekly flush of the system. this clears out ny debris that may have accidentally found it's way into the system, as well helping to eliminate any disease factor in the system.
Thank you for making these videos because they inspired me to build my own quail hutch, and now to make my own watering system. My question is: how do you hang the bucket from the hutch?? It seems like it would be really heavy when it's full of water and I'm wondering how I can safely and sturdily mount it to the hutch. Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep algae from growing inside the hose? That has been a problem for me here in sunny South Florida. Blessings to you and yours.
The biggest thing to try and keep the system out of the sun. I still get some algae but I don't worry about it. I just flush it out at the end of the summer. of course in Florida you don't have to take it down for the winter so just flush it out every few months.
Love the channel ........have you ever used a pot of boiling water too submerge plastic hose in ..... it becomes very pliable, like butter .........after it cools ........ amazing connects ..........S
Thanks for the great video. My big concern is stuff growing inside. Even when there is no visible algae, slime can build up. I thought about adding a drain valve instead of a cap at the end, making it easy to flush it out regularly. I saw your Scout shirt in another video. Should have known you were a fellow Scouter!
Thanks for watching. I don't worry too much about algae. It doesn't hurt the birds and doesn't seem to build up too bad. I just flush it out and clean it up at the end of the season.
Do you have a link for the hose quick connector!? I want to make sure I’m getting the correct one I love the idea of being able to fill the bucket that way
I just built mine and the quail sit on top of the bowls and make the water dirty. Maybe just not enough room in my cage. I am about to build a new bigger cage and seat the pvc a little higher. Any tips so they don't use the water bowls as a toilet? Thank you I learned to build from you.
I have birds that do that every once in a while too. You can add a block of wood or a dowel rod, piece of wire, or something like that above the cups so they have enough room to get their heads in to drink but not actually stand in them.
Hi Chris. Thanks for these videos. I'm looking to start raising quail for meat and eggs in the spring and doing lots of research on it. I have a question regarding watering systems and freeze. How do you keep the water from freezing with outdoor hutches and watering systems?
He's in Florida not much freezing going on there. Were I'm at I drain the system and use bowls, next year going to try a bubbler to keep the bowls from freezing
I’ve used these waterers for the last several months with no issues, I occasionally press the plungers to verify operation. The other day when it warmed up considerably I tested them and noticed the birds went absolutely nuts, they drank and drank. The tank was not empty so they weren’t out of water. I placed a plastic tub with water in there just to see if they would get in it, some did but in short order they surrounded it and continued to drink. I took it out under concern of over watering them. Ever seen this ? I was wondering if maybe they were playing in it to cool off, however it wasn’t that hot.
I have only ever noticed that if I had a cup that wasn't working and no water was coming out. Or with new birds that hadn't figured out the cups yet. What you described doesn't sound like either of those situations. I am not sure what exactly could have happened. I would keep an eye on them and if it continues to happen like that (they swarm the water cups every time you test them and fill them up) then you might need to make some adjustments to your watering system or even start watering in a dish or something. Hopefully it was just one time thing.
Hello id like to make one of these for my quail, but not seeing the link or name for the T couplings, that will actually hold the cups! Can you help me out on that?
Hello Chris! I really appreciate your channel and all the information you share with us. Did you encounter any problems with these waterers? I just watched a video ( I can show exactly if you wish) suggesting another type of waterers as they quickly get stuffed with quail feed and start draining. I would very much appreciate any information.
Great video, couple of questions; 1. keeping lid on water bucket. I have a TSC bucket, I place lid on top, not snapped down in my garage. However after about a week when refilling, notice mildew on lid. Is this normal or show I leave a small gap to allow moisture to escape? 2. Trying to prevent algae in water system by adding Apple Cider Vinegar with Mother. Currently using 1 tsp per gallon, should it be more or less?
Thanks for your videos - easy enough to find water cups but was trying to use your affiliate link - - - just FYI - the link must be out of date as it brings up a "page not found" message.
Hey man, thanks for all your great quail videos.. Ive just started raising quail a few months ago.. loving it so far and your videos have been a big help.. Just wondering if there any benefit (or disadvantage) to keeping a male in with the layers if Im not wanting fertilised eggs?
if you don't want fertilized eggs there is no reason to keep a male. The only disadvantage to keeping one really is the feed cost and that he will breed the females and can pull feathers from the back of their heads.
Hi! Do you reccomend Quail as pet? We had 2 chicken chicks we were raising for eggs and as pets, but a predator got em. Are the quail more friendly if you handle them from day one and hatch them out yourself? Also, theres a channel named a chick called albert that keeps a single quail indoors and takes them out ocassionally and the quail seems fairly healthy and friendly. Do you think that is possible? Thanks!
If you raise 2-6, handle them lots and feed them treats like mealworms from your hands they become pretty tame but it changes bird to bird. I don't recommend having just 1 as they are social birds. I had 8 quails last year and they let me pick them up, even when they were free ranging in garden beds. I had 1 that would run to me every time I opened the cage and if I had a bowl of treats she'd jump on my wrist and start eating from it before I could even put it down, she'd always check my hands for treats and would always come when called. I also used to bring her inside if I ever found a spider or cockroach I didn't want to deal with. I had to move interstate and legally couldn't bring them with me, I hatched out 40 a month ago and in a large group they are much harder to socialise but aren't scared of me when I go in the aviary or stress pant when I pick them up.
yeah! If you have one quail, though, be prepared to INTERACT WITH IT EVERY DAY(mine is pretty smart, he once fed himself from the shoebox where I contain his food by pushing away the thing I used to block the shoebox hole and ate the seeds and food) and give it 2-3 sq ft in their cage. They LOVE any kind of insect, so turn on any outdoor light and take him outside in your hands and catch moths and bugs at night :) you could also catch them yourself which is no fun. They can play with toys, they like pool noodles(seems weird but trust me), and if you can, and they have an indoor cage(or outdoor cage I guess), let them out for AT LEAST 45 min a day, keeps my roo verry happy. Just don't let them hide too much(VERY hard to find.)
I don't have that problem myself. Keep in mind that they don't really hold water in them. They only let water in when the plunger is pushed and it is usually just about as much as the bird will drink. So they pretty much stay dry all the time. If yours are not letting water in when the plunger is pushed it may be that your bucket is not vented. If you put a tight lid on it, it creates a vacuum and won't let water through the lines. You may need to crack the lid open or put a hole in it to fix that issue. I hope that helps.
Hi Chris, I finally got some quail, but they are a mixed lot, I got Tuxedo, Italian, A&M and Tibetans, I am going to sort them out but I'm wondering how long will it take for them to breed true? ALSO and my biggest concern is, 4 roosters in a 2x3 aviary cage and at sexual maturity they started scalping each other, one that had it's head sliced right open. Should I cull these roosters?
It is hard to say how long it will take to get them to breed true. Several generations I am sure but I don't know exactly how long. As far as the roosters, that is strange. It is probably one bird that is doing that to the others. If you can identify the one bird you can cull him out and they should be fine. Sorry to hear about your problems but they usually calm down with a little time and quail recover from those things remarkably well.
Yea, i don't like killing ANYTHING, and I think you should cull/give away the bird that's causing problems, I agree. Because the bird might kill the others. You could also isolate it.
Quick quetion buddy I have this exact same system complements of this video so thank you for that. My question is should 25 quail be emptying that 5 gallon bucket in 2 days? Mine do and it seems like a lot I'm not seeing any leaks so I'm not sure whats going on
it depends on what it is. if it is snuffles (common rabbit illness) it probably needs antibiotics. if it is just a cold (unlikely really) then she will get over it just fine. I would definitely isolate her from all other rabbits at the very least. I am sorry that you have this problem and I hope it gets better soon.
I the automatic watering system I am building has a differant water level indicator I have a 1" lenght of PVC pipe mounted vertically with a few holes drilled in it inside of that I have a 1/2 " diameter lenght of pipe with a end cap on it that floats in the big pipe and that sticks out of the bucket the heght that the float sticks out indicates the water level when only a little amount of floater pipe is showing I take it out and stick hose in to refill the water I have a ball valve on end of My hose so 20 seconds fill time is all it takes
Slightly Rednecked I managed to come up with the insulated jug for free 10 gallons Vs 5 gallon and insulated Vs translucent white bucket that can grow alge and can keep the water cool useing a screw in fitting doesn't permintly ruin the jug It could still be used as human water jug the plastic is UV exposure rated it seems perfect Any portable ice chest cooler that has a drain valve could be used
Ok I'm confused... Do you need to drill holes into the PVC for the water to flow through into the little cups? I couldn't see how they worked as you connected them to each other.
How are the cups holding up? Are you still use them? How often do they get stuck open or get pooped in? I'm using vertical chicken nipples right now but the poop below the cage stays wet because the water splashes down when they are pecking at the nipples. I'm trying to find a way to keep the poop dry under the cage to keep the flies down. Thanks...
I’ve been using them several months and had one that leaked shortly after installing the system and just replaced it instead of repairing it.(I bought a 12 pack of them, since they are pretty cheap). Poop is not an issue as long as they are installed elevated a bit and preferably food is not placed where their butts are aimed at cups whilst feeding. They do collect dust, which turns into mud but they are easily flushed out time to time with finger filling and sloshing them out. You can remove the cup and leave plunger in place but you must be careful as plunger can easily pop out when cup is removed. The only drawback with these are they stay pretty much empty so you could have an issue and not know it leaving them with out water. I highly recommend testing them daily just to verify operation. Water supply must be clean and unpressurized (gravity fed)
It seems like we discussed this already. maybe during a live broadcast. But just in case, I have not had any issues with the cups really. They occasionally get some poop in them but it hasn't been a big problem. I occasionally have one that sticks open and leaks but very seldom and they are pretty easy to repair or replace when it happens. All in all, they work very very well.
@@Slightlyrednecked Yeah you did discuss it. I wrote this question before the livestream. I fixed a couple leaking chicken nipples and that has helped but I will probably give them a try if I have anymore issues with the nipples. Thanks a lot.
At 12:10 you mentioned screwing the hose barb to the pvc feeding the cups, but the hose barb does not screw into the 1/2" pvc. If I separated the pvc from the pvc tee feeding the cup, that's not threaded either, so I'm not sure how to connect the barb from the bucket to the tees. Any advice?
I think you may have the wrong Ts. The ones I get are threaded specifically for screwing the water cups into. I have them in my Amazon Shop if you are having a hard time finding them. www.amazon.com/shop/slightlyrednecked
My quail is bored when in/outside his cage, he pecks absolutely everything and looks like he's bored, will he like pinecones, since they have seeds? He likes to peck a pool noodle tube thing that I left outside of his cage one day, and he pecks it back and forth to make it roll or something, will he like a pinecone? How would I keep him not bored(besides getting another quail)? Thank you!!!!!(when I let him putside, the first thing he does is peck the pool noodle pipe thing.)
The best thing to do would be to get more birds. Quail are social birds and like to live in groups. I am sure a pine cone would be fine but he really needs other birds to socialize with.
I think that this is the one you may be looking for. amzn.to/31dhFdz. honestly though, you can probably find one at a local hardware store (like Lowes) a lot cheaper.
Hi, maybe I'm being silly here but I have 1/2" PVC pipe and bought the PVC T fittings you suggested on Amazon but they don't fit snugly (if that's even a word) the 1/2" PVC slides right through the PVC T, any suggestions?
It comes down in the winter and I switch to crocks or bowls (actually more like a feeder with holes cut in the side for them to stick their heads through so they don't get in the water).
@@Slightlyrednecked do you get slime or algae build up? Im currently using the hanging gallon jug and I hang it up off the floor to prevent the birds from constantly walking through it and making it filthy. I change out the water every 3-4 days and it still gets slimy and smelly. Do you get that problem with this watering system?
the reason why I do not have automated watering systems... I fear it may break and I will not notice it being broken until birds or rabbits died. Manual watering is a pain in the behind but automated is not good for people like me who can get lazy if I am not doing something physical. I am sure you and others will do fine with these systems, I am the one who screws up automated stuff with my wandering mind.
No problem with that. I find that the birds all gather around the water cups if they run out of water so it is a good way to tell if it is still working or not. I just check it when I gather eggs every day.
I guess I need to update that link, thank you. You can still find the cups in my amazon shop - www.amazon.com/shop/slightlyrednecked. One cup will easily serve several birds. I like to have at least two cups to ensure that there is always one working in case something happens to the other one but I rarely if ever see birds at all the cups (or even multiple cups) at the same time and I have about 20 birds in my hutch right now.
I see you have been using these for a few years. Have to had any problems with your cups??? ive seen a few other youtubers that had some issues with them sticking open.
I don't have any problems with them. Every once in a while one malfunctions but I just replace it and it is good to go. They tend to last me for a few seasons before they need to be replaced. Most of my issues come from hard water deposits so it depends a little on what type of water you have in your area I am sure.
One cup will serve several birds. I like to use three for my cage that holds up to 30 birds. But I very seldom if ever see more than one cup being used at a time.
why everyone is filling the the bucket manually i have float and connecting it directedly to my home water i don't have to worries if there is water or not

A black bucket cuts down on algae. You can give them ACV if you buy into that mess but they should still have a clean source of water without the ACV.

Do have have a video detailing your rabbit watering system? I know it'll be the same concept, but I'm curious to see the waterers that you use.
I do. It is the same set up but I use water nipples for the rabbits. You can see them here. ua-cam.com/video/4QTRyDN6RIA/v-deo.html
do you have any bowls dry out and not fill?....I built a bucket system with 4 and they all get drank up but dont fill????any ideas on a fix?
I don't have that problem myself. Keep in mind that they don't really hold water in them. They only let water in when the plunger is pushed and it is usually just about as much as the bird will drink. So they pretty much stay dry all the time. If yours are not letting water in when the plunger is pushed it may be that your bucket is not vented. If you put a tight lid on it, it creates a vacuum and won't let water through the lines. You may need to crack the lid open or put a hole in it to fix that issue. I hope that helps.
Chris I built two of these this weekend and can not keep it from leaking at the pvc joins . I didn’t glue but feel like I need to
Did you wrap the threads with Teflon tape? That has worked for me.
Mine do and it seems like a lot I'm not seeing any leaks so I'm not sure whats going on
Lol its evaporating
About my rabbit Chris, my pregnant doe caught a cold. What should I do?
it depends on what it is. if it is snuffles (common rabbit illness) it probably needs antibiotics. if it is just a cold (unlikely really) then she will get over it just fine. I would definitely isolate her from all other rabbits at the very least. I am sorry that you have this problem and I hope it gets better soon.
Hi! I'm trying to make this but cant find your link to the 1/2inc threaded part that connects 1/2inc /3/8inc to connect water to pvc?
Sorry about that. I think this is the part that you are looking for. amzn.to/3sa0SUP
Man ty for the video
thanks for watching. I am glad you liked it.
I had a similar idea once. Sounds like you put it to work much better than i would have.
doesn't that make the water really hot?
Slightly Rednecked pics and maybe a vid coming
That makes sense. Sounds like a nice set up.
Slightly Rednecked I managed to come up with the insulated jug for free 10 gallons Vs 5 gallon and insulated Vs translucent white bucket that can grow alge and can keep the water cool useing a screw in fitting doesn't permintly ruin the jug It could still be used as human water jug the plastic is UV exposure rated it seems perfect
Any portable ice chest cooler that has a drain valve could be used
It also drys out till the peck for more so no Algae
How long does it take for them to learn to use the cups
Ok I'm confused... Do you need to drill holes into the PVC for the water to flow through into the little cups? I couldn't see how they worked as you connected them to each other.
The connectors that the water cups screw into already have holes. I put a link in the description to where you can purchase them that way.
I have them in my Amazon Shop if you are having a hard time finding them. www.amazon.com/shop/slightlyrednecked
at 12:43 you can see he has an adapter, it's threaded on one side and smooth on the other.
Wonder if that bulk head would work on a round bucket?
It does. My rabbit watering system is a round bucket.
Thanks!
Would a mirror work? I heard about mirrors for lonely birds
No probably not, when he says you need multiple birds, it’s very true!
I am trying to find the piece that connects the male end of the barb adapter to my 1/2 pvc pipe. Can you help?
I think that this is the one you may be looking for. amzn.to/31dhFdz. honestly though, you can probably find one at a local hardware store (like Lowes) a lot cheaper.
Hi, maybe I'm being silly here but I have 1/2" PVC pipe and bought the PVC T fittings you suggested on Amazon but they don't fit snugly (if that's even a word) the 1/2" PVC slides right through the PVC T, any suggestions?
That doesn't sound right at all. are you sure you got 1/2 inch PVC? they should fit snugly for sure.
I figured it out, I bought CPVC pipe on accident *face palm*
What do you do for winter for automatic water system
It comes down in the winter and I switch to crocks or bowls (actually more like a feeder with holes cut in the side for them to stick their heads through so they don't get in the water).
What do you use to clean and flush the system out? Are the cups easy to clean?
I only clean it out when I put it away for winter time. Just run some water through it, that is generally all it needs.
@@Slightlyrednecked do you get slime or algae build up? Im currently using the hanging gallon jug and I hang it up off the floor to prevent the birds from constantly walking through it and making it filthy. I change out the water every 3-4 days and it still gets slimy and smelly. Do you get that problem with this watering system?
how much water do drink (per day/week/month)?
I have a 5 gallon bucket watering 35 birds the bucket has been lasting about 10 days or so but suspect when heats up this will increase.
I built this exact waterer. The cups keep filling up on there own and overflow. What have I done wrong?
ive got one that often drips. i think the "plunger" thing isnt seated right so
I am having the same problem. Did you figure out a way to fix it?
@@tehpurplepills I tried doing that. I fix them but later they do the same thing.
Where do I get the water cup?
You can purchase them on amazon.
the reason why I do not have automated watering systems...
Chris do we need to separate buck rabbit and doe when doe is pregnant
yes. It really is best to keep them separate all the time and only introduce the female to the male when it is time to breed.
Also, how many birds will one cup serve? (The cup link is broken!)
Got a link for the water cups ?
I can't believe I forgot to include that link. :) it is updated and included now. Thanks.
We made a pipe watering system because we dont have the money for this watering system because of all of my birds lol
I run a splitter and feed two cages with one bucket.
Thats awesome!
How fast do the quails learn to use the spouts in afraid my quails won't figure it out
They figure it out pretty quick. I usually get them trained to them in less than a day.
How long doe it last?
How many cups do you need per what number of birds?
One cup will serve several birds. I like to use three for my cage that holds up to 30 birds. But I very seldom if ever see more than one cup being used at a time.
You seem to have a Ghost at 5:23 do your doors normally close themselves?
I assure you there is no ghost and the door isn't shutting itself. :)
Where can i buy the automatic water cup?
They are listed in my Amazon shop. www.amazon.com/shop/slightlyrednecked
How do you keep from freezing?
I don't. I take them down in the winter and water in containers.
I used a 3/8 bit a 5/16 bit and three sizes in between and none of them work.
Does this system work for ducks?
I haven't tried it but I don't think it would work well for ducks. Their bills are too wide to get in there.
Where is the parts list?
click see more above
why everyone is filling the the bucket manually i have float and connecting it directedly to my home water i don't have to worries if there is water or not
Does the hose fit through the mesh? I don't want to cut the mesh.
It fits through mine just fine.
HEY CAN MY 9 WEEK OLD RABBIT MALE BREED A FEMALE NOW
no. They really need to be about 6 months old before breeding.
Slightly Rednecked thank you so much
