The D-envy line was actually a shot at Sigmund, quite a few of his crazy theories about how the female brain works involved them being subconsciously jealous of men because they had penises.
That and the "MotherLover" line was another jab at him for his theories about sons wanting to sleep with their mothers.
She had a lot of subtle jabs at him, but nothing compared to the bombs he dropped on her.

A lot of people who have reacted to this have always missed in the beginning and end Sigmund looks at his watch. To Sigmund this was not a battle, but a counseling session. That is why at the end he say "Our time is up Teresa." That is what most shrinks say at the end of a session.

The one thing people don't always pick up on is that the ERB's are done in character. This one is a perfect example. Mother Theresa was a pacifist, and as such doesn't really throw major shots at Freud other then his theories being out there. Whereas Freud uses psychoanalysis to completely destroy Theresa, hitting at the darkest parts of her mind and picking her apart. Its amazing.

Agreed Freud won easy. Mother Teresa could've punched a lot harder since Frued has a lot to diss him on. Her 2nd verse was quite funny tho. Some jabs Scru didn't catch on first glance were

In this context it's much worse to call Freud a motherlover than a mf. 3. super-ego-trippin is another reference to Freud's theory but also jab at his narcissism.

@@dirtyd4cdeeds935 oh it certainly "can", but that doesn't mean they did. They were all very surface and fly by. And she didn't actually go into the subject outside of some one off bits of wordplay. If she actually integrated those lines into a proper bar where she was really digging into him and getting dirty like Freud did then it would have been closer.
If someone is coming at you talking about you letting people die and disgracing your god, you can't be like "haha you trippin!". If you're gonna attack him for his mother complex you gotta build a full line around it and go in, because all of them come off as super offhanded. Talking about not having D-Envy is clever, but that doesn't sting if you don't make it more targeted. Most of her lines were building herself up, which Freud himself points out which only further diffuses it.
To that chastity vow line: redundant basically means "unnecessary by virtue of another thing already achieving the intended effect". He's saying that Theresa didn't need to swear off sex because nobody would want to touch her anyway. It's actually a really hard line out the gate lmao

It's an objectively correct observation, but the reasoning is so far divorced from reality that it's nonsensical. Women wanting to be men, or wishing they were men, or wishing they had the same advantages or opportunities as men, that's common. The whole "it's literally because of the penis itself" part is the only part that people actually take issue with.

I actually have seen someone give it to Teresa, I forget who. Basically they argued that Freud only had two jokes: "you're ugly" and "your god is fake", and almost all his lines were variations on that.
But I think he was hitting harder even if you think that.
He also said she stole money from people
Well, and that she was a scam artist and basically took money to watch people die. Apparently after receiving millions of dollars in donations, years after some journalists went to visit her place and it was just the same as it was before, a shitty unclean place with no sterilized equipment or anything. Apparently she was also one of those people that believed that modern medicine was wrong and defiant of God's plan and instead they were not supposed to be cured but "accompanied to God". So essentially she didn't help anyone.
Except for the cocaine line most of what Mother T had on Freud was his sex stuff as well, so I think arguing that he only hit her for being unsightly is a little rich.
They were both hitting the other in one note but I feel that Mother T had the better flow while Freud had the harder punches.
So it really comes down to what you value more in a battle rap - style and delivery or actual punches.

Not only Freud's punches were stronger, but also his attitude of just owning being an egocentric and libidinous guy during his rhymes made the best M.T.'s punches against him look weaker than they actually were.
Yup, can't remember which ones but Scru has said as much during other ERB's. Leaning into your bad qualities and treating them like the better parts of yourself deflates the other persons verse (sometimes a little, sometimes a lot). They can't hurt you with your flaws if you wear them like armor.

One angle of approach I spotted is that Teresa, the character in this, may have walked up to the mic with a mind to still appeal to masses. We do see some blows back from her, and I may be off rails here, but she formed lines that were still couched in the same good-vibes appeal for an ordination, a parish, what the word ever may be. The crowd in this is still through the camera, so for the camera she works.
Freud took a working approach, used the skills of his trade, but a lot of context, for the formation of why his lines are set in place wouldn't be visible to a layman? ERB put things together real subtle with this one if so.
I’ve seen other people react to this and they basically said Teresa won because of her flow and these same people hand waved away Sigmund’s bars as “edgy atheist rebuttals” but considering how Teresa’s whole thing is religion it hits her hard! Thank you, Scru for not falling for that obvious trap! Sure Teresa’s energy was fun but she wasn’t really saying anything while Sigmund went full therapist and dressed her down!
She had a few good ones. But they were too far and between where as Freud was just slamming her on repeat lol.

For me, the ending is just great, because I study psychology and during one class about how to end a session we used "Our time is up (Name of the person)" as an example so Freud literally ended the fight like if it was a psychology session

The way she said “off the beat” was syncopated, meaning it was OFF THE BEAT OF THE SONG. GENIUS. Freud killer her though, but ERB never miss with this stuff 🔥 Edit: NOT actually syncopated, but still cool that they emphasized a middle downbeat (I think) and made it sound off the beat.
It wasn't syncopated, because the emphasis still landed on the downbeat. She would have had to wait another half count.

I really like how Scru appreciated MTs wordplay and cleverness. To many people seem to look straight over her in favor of Freud (who won, I won't debate that), but she has alot of cool lines and some serious burns.
And yet in the next second, he would brush her cleverness off and act like it meant nothing.

The no D-envy line was a bit of a shot at Freud actually, in addition to being clever wordplay. Penis envy was an idea coined by Freud, which basically stated that women wish they were men - way oversimplifying of course. She's basically calling his idea BS as well as hyping herself up. Was it super savage? Not really, but it was still a shot at him.
That said, Freud destroyed her, and I'm glad that it didn't get by you like it seemed to get by a lot of other reactors.

Doesn't unzip her bodybag, but it's more than just clever wordplay, and it builds up to the further dismissal of his work at the end of the verse.

I remember when this battle first came out, I also wondered how anyone thought Teresa won, but somehow in the comments the majority was on her side, though over time you can see more people actually saw the difference in words vs bars

I do think that Sigmund took that but a few lines from Theresa you didn't seem to know the background to:
- D-envy mostly refers to Sigmunds theories of masculinity that included penis envy. MT is most likely saying she ain't got that envy but Sigmund might since he talks about it so much.
- Super-ego is one of the parts of human mind in Sigmunds theories. Super-ego tripping would be both "having a large ego" and "super-ego taking a trip"
- You got the Freudian slip thing, but it's more than a play on his name. Term originates from him, as the slip is thought to be the unconscious mind interfering with speech and reveling something from "underneath." Combined with the ego thing, she's saying Freuds previous verse slipped that he feels insecure deep down.
Yeah he did miss quite a few of her disses but I don't blame him, they were pretty subtle. Like Mother Lover being a reference to his Oedipus complex theory. She still got bodied yeah.
Freud's entire rap was a psychotherapy session, ending with "our time is up". People who think theresa won, fell for the flow trap. Its the words that matter most.
Look at his face after 15:14 for the rest of the battle. There's some fear and stress in those eyes. Man just gave up reacting and cautiously waited for Freud to stop gunning MT down.

I haven't seen anyone recommend this: Frank Sinatra VS Freddy Mercury. Absolutely brutal. They both come out swinging.
What I like about Scru is that he's a battle rapper. Many other reaction channels barely pay attention to the verses or how hard a diss hits because they don't listen to rap battles outside erb.
Fun fact about Freuds stance before his second verse. Psychologists are taught to not cross their arms in front of them, because that is seen as a barrier to the patient. When standing, this stance is supposed to show openness to what is being told to you. This means Freud is physically showing he properly listend to MTs verse and is diagnosing her based on that.
Nah when he said "your chastity vow, redundant" he's basically saying her chastity vow doesn't matter since nobody wants to sleep with her
The chastity vow line I think was saying the opposite of what you interpreted. He's saying "you didn't need to take a vow of chastity, no one would bang you anyways"

You honestly missed quite a few shots Teresa took at Freud. Like the "motherlover" line was basically here not cursing while calling him a literal mother lover. She also took shots at his theories and stuff. Off the beat was a pretty good performance bar.
I love basically everything about MT's performance. I think her flow and wordplay is fantastic, and if taken as a battle of *style* , she absolutely wins. But... I don't think she took a lot of shots at him at all. Imagine if Freud instead of saying "to you calcutta meant cal-cutta check" basically said "You went to calcutta". It's the difference between making *reference* to a thing and using it to hurt the other person.
Teresa made reference to a lot of things. She did not use almost any of them for a cohesive diss.
Nothing she does punches hard enough to beat Freud even taking all that into account. She delivers jabs while Freud knock out punched her and just continued whaling on her afterwards.
Its crazy how many reactions i watched that thought Mother Teresa won and i was like whatever you are on right now must be fucking amazing xD

The ‘200 bucks an hours’ bar was a crack at therapists basically “just sitting there” listening to “crack addicts” ramble on, which is just a crack at therapists in general.
I think the thing with this battle is, it HEAVILY depends on what you know from each of these individuals. A lot of people who know a lot about Freud, would argue Theressa won and vice versa. For example that D-Envy line wasn’t just word play, it was a jab at Sigmund’s Freud’s life work heavily revolving around daddy issues and mommy issues with absurd theories. Ofc knowing a lot about Theressa’s controversies in Cal Cutta, make Freud’s bars hit harder. I’d argue Freud won but I don’t think it’s as far apart as you think, there’s a lot of quick ‘for the camera’ punches as you say that only really work if you have knowledge of Freud’s absurd theories
Except that none of Teresa's punches even land. Yeah, we generally tend to laugh at Freudian psychology, but its still foundational even in the modern era. And he is by no means ashamed of these things. Nor are they really things to be ashamed of.
He wasn't intrinsically wrong. He was simply wrong about the prevalence.

Yeah, Theresa was a horrible human being. And when this was dropped, a lot of people thought she won. I was like "What?!" Because as you mentioned, she got bodied and his stuff had layers. She literally just wordplayed herself out the battle. Some of it worked, but his stuff just hit her harder and harder as time went on.

Been watching a lot of his ERB reactions lately and I’ve been honestly loving them so far, the breakdowns he does are great and his sense of humour is hilarious as well. Loved him in his appearance in ERB, hope to see him in another battle at some point in the future
Some people give it to Mother Teresa because of her flow and wordplay (also with the "0 - 17 as a nominee", "obsessed with masturbation but you're off the beat" & "mother lover" bars) but I'm glad you saw it like me Scru, Sigmund just went insane with the "thank to the imaginary god I wasn't in one of your beds", "I watch people live and you watch people die" & "you hide your true feelings like they were other people's money".

He had the better lines (like cocaine) but I have to dock points for his repeating himself so much. He had three insults (ugly, alleged embezzlement, making fun of religion) and he used all three of them in both verses. While either verse alone was a killer, he failed to actually say anything in the second verse that wasn't already in the first one.
Meh - I feel like the hardcore athiests will give it to Freud because they have a bias...

What's sad is that there were many people who thought MT won. And that's why Scru is easily the best ERB reactor IMO. I struggle to find any other ERB reactors who actually pays anything but the most surface level of attention to the lyrics. Scru catches all the bars and even if he doesn't explicitly known every historical or contextual detail he knows a lot of them and does a good job inferring the others.
When I watch other ERB reactors they will legitimately say shit like "That Nun DMC line is super fire! See for those who don't know, Run-DMC was a rapper in mid-90s. And you see, that's why you gotta pay attention to these lyrics like I do."
They will only catch the most surface level laffy-taffy puns, and then act like they are clever for doing so, even when the "insight" they provide often gets major factual details super wrong.

Teresa's lines in general made this one of the more close ERBs in my opinion, but Freud just had that edge in the end.
