I ran the Houston Marathon back in 2000. It's a grind doing the training but so gratifying when you finish. BTW, at mile 20 you will "hit the wall" to me, it's a sensation of running in quicksand. Have fun!

With respect, what you said is not true completely, the wall is your body running out of fuel to fast to tap into fat stores for energy, slower runners never hit the wall, because their pace is slow enough for their body to adjust and use different energy. Long distance runners use different styles of running to conserve energy. And before you say anything, a marathon is classed as long distance running. Cliff young proved this and there is a style of running named after him because of this, and now many runners use this technique, it's called the Young shuffle, it uses almost no energy in comparison and is slow enough that you never hit the wall, he ran consecutive days from before dawn to after dark for over 5 days for total of almost 600 miles from Sidney to melbourne at 61 years old having never run a marathon before. That's over a marathon a day for 5 days straight and a half marathon on the sixth day, kind of puts it in perspective doesn't it, he was 61 when he did this, so talk about that wall and taunt a new runner with it if it makes you feel better, that's what those other guys did to cliff, and he beat them all, kinda makes you a loser like them when you do it

The only thing that worries me is they seem to not understand that regardless of finishing time, he won't able to complete 26.2 miles non-stop running. He's definitely walking segments, even miles at the marathon! He's going to cramp out, he's going to get blisters, probably some chafing. All of this, plus being his first Marathon, he's going to walk. I think the healthier approach is to finish the Marathon at the given time limit by the NYC Marathon.
