    You're going to love that radio! Like you, I don't work a lot of voice, but when I do, I fire up the 7200 because the audio quality is outstanding. I should also note that the IC-7200 is currently on sale from Icom with an instant $200 rebate from authorized dealers. Thanks for putting out these videos. Now I just need to save the $ for a SCS modem!

    I have had an IC-7200 for almost a year now and love it. I will be looking forward to what kinds of ideas you have to make it portable for field ops.

    So many toys, so very little time... Icom has some good rep for sure. Enjoy your new acquisition, looks like a good pieces of kit. I just pulled the trigger on my Yaesu VX-7r replacement today. Will be taking it on a long winter hike in Dec. Looking forward to the series. Take it easy.

    I've had my IC-7200 for about 2 years now and its a great radio. I use the USB interface for digital modes.

      +Brian Meyer I have been working on setting the USB interface tonight to work with winlink.org's RMSExpress. I got all the functions to work but could not make a link (propagation). I will try again tomorrow and if all goes well will post a video on the process. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Thanks for the video. I toyed between getting a 7200 or a 718 for a back up rig and the 718 won out due to price point. I love the 718 and always recommend it to anyone . I look forward to seeing your 7200 videos !

      +SurvivalComms IC-718 is a great radio. We used them overseas for MARS operations back in the late '90s.

    You're missing the front handles! Good radio though. Durable for portable field operations and easy to get up on digital with the built in USB port. No need for SignalLink or other such device. While it may it may not have the best filtering or ears, when you take it outdoors and it gets covered in dust, perhaps gets hit with some rain blown under the shade canopy, or some rough handling, it takes it all, asks for more, and keeps working. The heat sinks/thermal management also allow for heavy duty cycles when digital.

      +Jeff Barr I'm happy to make the videos. Featuring a radio that folks can actually buy (vice a second-hand commercial) has been long over due. I should have added this radio to the channel long ago (the IC-718 is also a great radio).

      +Hardened Power I highly recommend this radio. I should have added one to the channel long ago (instead of using friend's units). I have list of video I want to make with this radio. I still have to make a run to Ham Radio Outlet to get the handles before it hits the field and gets dirty.

      I'll take an ICOM 706 MKIIG (Late Model) or an ICOM 7000 any day over the 7200.Hands down both of them blow the 7200 away & they provide more bands as well for about the same money.

      +TRprepper Thanks TR. It's allot of bang for the buck and does not come close to what some folks will pay for security items. This said, the IC-718 (entry level unit) is also a good radio. I'm still waiting for the Mega Millions drawing tonight but if I win I will add an IC-718 to the channel too.

    What was all of that NOISE in the beginning of the video? I needs a ClearSpeech DSP speaker or module so all of that white noise in all modes goes away.The screen is so small for a transceiver that size as well? ICOM dropped the ball big time making the display so small.I have HT's with larger displays I think? I usually love ICOM but I would not consider this one at any price.

    I love mine. SSB it's not bad (takes some tweaking for settings for your audio to really shine) but for digital operations it's amazing out of the box. That said it took some work and research to find the right drivers and get everything to communicate with each other but I'm sure now that it's been out for a bit it's been more streamlined in that aspect.
    I run mine with the older free HRD for PTT/radio controls and mainly run JT65-HF. With an MP-1 on a wooden pallet I literaly worked the world with the thing last summer on 10 meters.
    I'm actually planning on getting it sent to me over here in the middle east so I can have a chance at being the DX for once haha
    Also from a prepper aspect it only take removing a diode or two to open up the transmit range.

    • @Terribleguitarist89
      @Terribleguitarist89 9 років тому

      +Commsprepper Mine has the handles and they're actually really sturdy. I was expecting them to be a "gimmicky" flimsy quality but they seem like they could hold up to some abuse in the field.
      Next month I should be applying for my Iraq amateur license so hopefully after getting it sent over I can post some videos operating from this side of the world.

      +Commsprepper I've got the iraqi amateur radio league's info and the application form. Just have to wait until I'm up there to apply since I have to physically be in country (currently working in kuwait).

    what do you think the a Yaesu or the icon for man portable? I want to do foot mobile with 200+ mile capabilities...897, 57 or the 7200(rugged version)?
    fyi...i'm suffering from charge controller envy, I picked up 2350 watts of panels and have been playing with them. Haven't put down the bigger bucks for the mppt, mucking around with the cheaper tri-stars. doing my best to not kill any electronics and set the house on fire as I go through the learning curve. I've very much enjoyed the thread. thank you for your time and efforts.

      +j johns I prefer Icom equipment with the exception of my FT-817ND but that's only because Icom discontinued the IC-703 & IC-706. Radios can't be measured in miles, there are to many moving parts (band, power, antenna, etc). The question is how much battery power (weight) you are willing to carry. 200+ miles implies a HF solution vice a VHF/UHF solution. For my (man) portable bugout bag, keeping weight in mind, I selected the FT-817. I have the IC-7200 for base operations because I prefer dedicated radios over all mode/all band (I don't like to have all my eggs in one basket). This said the IC-7200 is built for field use and mobility (such as bugging out to another location).

      +j johns I buy stuff at Ham Radio Outlet (www.hamradio.com) but that's because they have one of their brick and mortar stores 20mins. from the house here. www.aesham.com will also have them and if you want a unit with the tacticool paints jobs then www.gigaparts.com. There is also eBay.

    does it have variable rf power on a knob or is it menu driven variable power settings. on a personal note, i hate menu driven radios.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  9 років тому

      +dale myers Dale it's menu driving but it is located in the quick access menu, then it's adjusted with the VFO dial.

    • @dalemyers9265
      @dalemyers9265 9 років тому

      dang and i'm looking for what i want. but can't find it. one slightest power surge will kill menu driven processor. and i'm not that strong on fixing these types of radios. but a pot, a cap, a resistor, a inductor are much easier fixes. even a tube swap is easier than de-soldering and re-soldering. let alone an old tube type is heartier than an ic to an emp burst. but i only want is physically controlled function in a radio. it's complete range of control, not steps like a menu driven. no i'm not trying to come down on you. i have hope more hams like me make an impression on the industry to create more radios like we like. even if we could get back tube finals too. thank you for hearing my cause, as i'm asking questions.

    • @Commsprepper
      @Commsprepper  9 років тому

      +SilentSniper Vt Don't rule out the Icom IC-718. For base station units I prefer dedicated radios vice all mode/all band radios so not to have all my eggs in one basket.

      +SilentSniper Vt I love my Yeasu FT-817ND for my bugout bag. They did a great job packing all those features into a small light-weight unit. However, when I need power (above 5 watts) I prefer Icom and radios dedicated to specific bands so I don't have all my eggs in one basket. Congratulations on making General Class and thank you for supporting the channel.
