- This is how I cut my hair at home. This gives my long layers that work perfect for my wavy hair. This is only something I do in a pinch. When Christian cuts my hair it is definitely a more polished haircut. But if scraggly ends are weighing you down this is something you can do at home!

I've been cutting my hair since the first lockdown. I followed your advice and achieved my best ever cut. It has really helped boost my curls too.
How does it look straight?
I cut my hair on NYE and followed the video you linked. I ordered the shears she linked from Amazon and while I was nervous, it turned out great. I mostly wanted layers, not necessarily to take off a lot of length. I haven't had a haircut in 18 months, only discovered I had wavy hair in May of 2020.
When I tell you my waves have never looked so healthy, some are 2c and I'm normally a 2a/b wavy. I've gotten so many compliments on my hair and it just looks so much curlier and defined. I'm so glad I took the plunge.
Thank you Courtney! This was my first self attempted haircut, and it might be the best I’ve ever had. I modified using what I had on hand (hair tie, banana clip, and my husband’s beard scissors) and it worked really well! I took off 6 inches and my waves are popping!
That’s similar to the technique my sister uses when she cuts my hair. Only difference is she does a dry cut and it’s usually pretty blunt. Maybe we can try this next time.
Thank you! This really works and took me only 5 minutes, which is about all the extra time I have with a 2-year old 😂 I have a bit of anxiety about having other people cut my hair from sensitive brain surgery scars but now I feel confident I can do it myself! Praise God and blessings to you for sharing such wise tips❤
Thank you!!! So glad this really helped!!!
I really appreciated the home hair cut video! With a 9 month old and the closest hair salon a 45 minute drive away it seems almost impossible to find time and child care coverage to get my hair cut !
Manes by Mell is great. I always cut my own hair... Wavy hair is very forgiving.
Could you try diffusing one side cool, one side warm? Thank u 💓
I love the Creaclip. During lockdown its how I finally got the courage to cut my husband's hair. I'm still cutting his hair and dont need the Creaclip as much. I haven't figured out how to use it on my hair though!
This awesome!!! Last time I cut my hair I tried Brad Mondo’s tutorial. It was fine, except that I had to straighten my hair for it. 😕 I have a Crea Clip and have used it for ages to cut my own hair, but always used it on dry hair. This is so helpful! I’ll have to try this and check out other tips from Mell. Also, I think you’d be a great hair stylist! You already know so much about hair products and ingredients, and I don’t think there are nearing enough curly hair informed stylists.
Yes i believe she would be an awesome beautician..she knows alot about hair...products,styles...and her personality is super awesome!!
Absolutely love your positive perky attitude
Ready to try it myself! Needing a cut and my hair stylist is not working right now.
Looks great. I never thought of cutting with conditioner in my hair. I may try that.
I just saw a new ponytail holder....PRO Hair ties. I'd love to see you try them out!
I like the suggestion of the leveled clip. I toyed with the idea over the years, but never bought one. With my cervical spine and shoulder issues... I think this might be a bit of a “life saver” to cut at home. I have tried the modified unicorn Mell did for her seester, Amanda. Looked nice, but I have about an 1/8th the amount of hair as Amanda. LOL! She looked stunning, of course. I tried the pigtails a few months later... not for my looser pattern (2a-2c and a few 3a in the very back under section).
Your hair always looks so healthy. Tip for trimming with conditioner for slip is genius! So simple!🤗🌻
I love manesbymell, too. Both of you guys are my favorites for hair videos. :)
same!
OMG i have the creaclip i bought it many many years ago. I have the same scissors and i to follow Mell. I am looking into getting the curlsmith rehab slave.
Good video!!! Keep up the good work. I never thought to cut it with conditioner. I do usually do it wet. The creator suggests to straightened hair then cut. I prefer to do it wet.
This was so great! I feel like there's a lot of potential for me to experiment and refine my skills, but the first result was really good. My favorite DIY haircut I've done because I've never been able to add layers before. One snag was that I like to part my hair in the same place on the side, so in the second step where you point cut the ends only by hand, I slanted my hand to trim so the shorter section by my face could meet the long. Oh and I did forget my hair shrinks when it's dry, but luckily I did a long cut, so it should be good. Thanks for a great video explaining so simply! I'm a huge fan of your channel!! (Especially DIY/budget haircare)
Yay glad this helped!!! And thank you!!!
You did a terrific job!!! It looks wonderful and... I'm so excited to see a tutorial involving the Crea Clip!!! It seems like you got some perfect layers by using it!!!
I love manes by Mel you and Mel are my favorite!! Mell doesn’t have my hair which is why I love you ❤️💕
Thank you for your videos! I bought the Giovanni triple tea tree treat shampoo and the smooth as silk conditioner and because of your videos I now know that my hair LOVES protein! You have changed my hair for the better!!
Aww oh my goodness! Thank you! I am glad these products are working for you. 🤗🤗
GIRRRRL- that is amazing!!! I am gonna order that crea clip right now. I have thick hair & I've been cutting it myself for years. It's a pain in the rear & takes a long time because I have to section it out or my hair runs away from the scissors. Your conditioner slick is BRILLIANT & Mel is fantastic- for those who don't know MEL is a professional (manesbymel).
THANK YOU for sharing this fantastic technique=) To me (I am not a professional) your cut looks well balanced & lays beautifully- it's far better than some professional haircuts I've had & not been happy with....
You did a great job,I have super long and thick and wavy hair that is always in a bun and I’m going to use your technique to do my own hair, wish me luck thanks for sharing
OMG, I needed this, told my hubby yesterday he needed to learn how to cut layers in my hair!!!
I attempted to cut my hair for the first time a few weeks ago. I wish I had watched this first 🤦♀️
How often to you trim your hair?
I have been scared to trim my own hair beyond a simple straight trim. I personally haven't even worn layers in over 15 years because I could never style it well and it just looked a hot mess. I've only just started the curly girl method for my wavy hair so I am in transition. (I get nice loose waves/curls for 2 hrs before they fall flat) when do you think getting a layering cut will be a good idea?
So helpful!!! I’ve done at home hair cuts for years but this will definitely up my game
I have this! Looking forward to seeing the end result.
Courtney: *Mentions maybe getting her haircutting license
Me: *Frantically searching how much plane tickets are to Texas
Hahahaha you are the sweetest! Thank you!
Lol
Same same!
Yes, you'd be an amazing cosmetologist, Courtney! (We also have family in a few different parts of Texas, so it's not completely out of the question ... ;))
I live in San Antonio, Texas...have been needing a haircut...maybe you can hook us up with your beautician for a great cut....please please..thanks for your help....
I heard Brad Mondo scream when you lifted up the CreaClip 😂😂😂 but I love it myself, there's nothing wrong with it, or a unicorn cut, as long as you're careful! The best haircut I've ever had was by a professional in LA, and he did a similar technique!
YEEEESSSS
You should totally get you license, you seem to love hair so it would make sense.
Yay! Looks great! This year I’ve only been trimming my ends and around my face so I hope soon I will get brave enough to do the layers 😎
Me too.....i have been doing trims since pandemic only small trims...but it has been good so far.....want to learn the layer cutting...what the heck..will just grow out again...another year into pandemic...thanks for sharing your knowledge..xoxo
OH my gosh this is absolutely amazing! I was able to cut my hair and not have it look terrible! I am so showing this to my girl friends!!! You saved me a good chunk of money! ^_^
Awe, thank you! I am so glad this worked for you! 🤩💃
And yes, save that money! 🤑
Finally. I found something that I can follow. Thank you!
Just did a DIY haircut yesterday.
Courtney, you are so cool 😎 I would never have the courage to attempt that! You should totally get your license ☺️ You would get clients from all over the country 😉
We have the same hair texture, thank you! 🙌
Your hair cut came out great, you are so cute!!
I have my haircut in stairs(a little over shoulders)If I try this haircut will I get a good result?
Thank you for this Courtney! I am always frantic to trim my own hair. Yet my stylist tends to take off a bit too much when it comes to a "trim". Interesting gadget. Not cheap, but then again, would be the cost of 1 1/2 trims at the salon. Sooooooo.....it's probably worth it.
I wish I had the balls to do this. ⚽️😄💪
Love your hair!!! The first one I watched when I started my journey. ❤️
Did you ever do it?
I’ve just done a big chop (on myself as the UK is back in lockdown). How do I gauge the lengths for layers? I’m worried my hair will look even thinner if I cut in layers.
I have those new curlsmith protein products. I know the one is called a FOAM not a mousse I screwed up the first time and shook it. Saw that was bad but now when I pump it I don’t get a mousse consistency I get sad white seafoam like at the beach. Is that right or is my pump bad? Cant wait for my hair to get long enough to cut it myself. Love you and manes by Mell!
Will this work with shorter hair mine is just above the shoulders and I'm trying to let my shorter layers catch up and I want this shape too
What 3 Giovanni products are in your tub ? I must know 🤗
I soooooo need one of those clips!
Beautiful job, you do not need to go to a hair dresser, you do a beautiful cut
Now I want to try to cut my own hair! Courtney what are you doing to me?! 😜
Courtney, having used both the scalp care and then protein strengthening line from curlsmith what products would you pull together to increase volume and incorporate proteins and hydration?
Used this method today . Hair looks like hers now xD
Your hair is beautiful!
Is there a way of doing this without a creaclip? 😅
yeah you can just brush your hair to the front like her technique put in a hair tie and cut across. just make sure you crush it properly to the front so it turns out good.
Oh my gosh, I should have made a frown instead of a smile!!! 🙃 Oops. You would make an amazing stylist!
Okay so I missed how to get a round cut as far as length!?
Pulling the hair straight up instead of forwards is what creates the rounded shape.
Do you not cut the shorter layers on top? That's what I'm trying to figure out since I have not had a hair cut in 1 1/2 yrs I think.
Very very helpful video!!❤️
you make that look easy xxx
I noticed the HUGE bottles of Giovanni in the background...did you get them at Marshall’s or TJ Maxx? If so are they legit or questionable like I read about hair products from Amazon. I am nervous to buy so much from those stores if they are old and expired and not legit. Thanks in advance!!! 🙏🏻
They sell those large bottles at sprouts where I live.
Do you wash the conditioner out?
Thank you!
Love it 😀
You really should get your license
Unicorn hair
Say good-bye to clumping. 👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼☹️
@1:02 - @1:21 video freeze frames for some reason
Still love the content though c:
I think it pauses because she's doing a voice over for that small part!!
@@amixeblu I wasnt being impatient, it just didnt really seem like a voice over part. But if it was it seemed out of place to me I guess. It did not hinder my enjoyment of the video I just wanted to let her know if it was an editing mistake or something.
