  • Only in Papua New Guinea! What a show of cultural dancing, singing and they even eat fire! Like chomp and chew it!
    www.sailingnan...
    In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we finish our sail north to the town of Kavieng. After dropping anchor and heading to shore, we discover that the APEC summit meeting for tourism is being held in the town we just arrived to! We knew this would mean some sort of show so went to investigate. We arrived early and somehow made our way into the VIP area. The delegates arrived and yet we still remained in the VIP area! After we were invited up stairs for a cold coconut, we realised we were not getting booted out and made the most of our time as VIP's! Mingling with the delegates and getting front row of every performance. We watched a bird dance, never before performed in the public eye. We witnessed the ancient duk duk dance from the secret society of Tolai men, who also eat and dance in fire... Only in Papua New Guinea!!
    We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We just arrived to Indonesia after cruising the Pacific islands, so many places to explore!

    A real treasure of a video. How would you ever get to see all of that ceremony? Just amazingly off scale! Pascale looked so charming with her adorable hat and minimal makeup..that's how you got in and were made so welcome. Who would ever turn her away...no one. You both just do such a great job of making us feel like we are there with you. Marvelous filming and editing skills.

      Haha hells yea! Just act confident and you will be fine! We have a similar thing that we do on Nandji, when ever we are unsure of weather, wind or sails, we always say "what would Jon Sander do?" as in the amazing world record sailing legend who told us, the worst thing about getting knocked down is that you lose your winch handles.... Yew!

  • @arthurimona5901

    Great video! Just a little correction regarding the Dukduk, they're actually originally from New Ireland, and not East New Britain. The Tolai people who now reside in and around the coastal areas of East New Britain are actually New Irelanders by origin who migrated over time and settled there. Thus, you'd see the same practices on both provinces. New Ireland is the true home of the Tumbuan society. I was very happy when you said you'd be heading to Kavieng on the previous episode. I'm a New Irelander! Hope Nusa Island treated you both well! You're most welcome to come around again! Cheers wantok! Laikim upla (PNG pidgin for 'love you guys')!

    This episode was fantastic and why sailing around the world is so appealing to many. Experiencing local cultural practices, dances, and food make your content so relevant and informative. This has to be one of your best videos yet. Not sure I would want to try the fire coal eating thing. Could only imagine splinters of wood trying to pass through the system. Not a pleasant thought. I like Yoshi's idea better, "Have more lobster!" Thank you for sharing, I loved every minute. How are things going with the Windlass? Did it every arrive?

    • @FrothLyfeSailingNandji
      @FrothLyfeSailingNandji  6 років тому

      Hi Steve!! Great to hear you enjoyed the vid and think it is up there with the best we have done! It was definitely one of the most amazing times we have captured on film so glad we could portray our day well! I love to try all the food of each culture we get to visit and oh man the lobster! Plates of it haha In my most official way possible I ate my fair share haha The windlass!! Ahh, the importing into Indonesia is our current dilema. We have had to wait for the windlass to be constructed and for parts to arrive from Italy, now we are trying to import into Indonesia without the 30% tax on top of its value. We have arranged for a new anchor chain to arrive, it is just the windlass now! Hopefully it will be on the front of Nandji by mid of August!

    Thanks for another great video guys. I got to see something tonight I would likely never of experienced without your help!

    Serendipity. doesn't it always happen, some of the best experiences are those you least expect it? Meaning, arriving at the place where they have their own meeting, closed to strangers, yet you get to see something that only a few people will ever see in their lifetime? Rule #1. Always act like you belong, even if you don't. It works.
