  • Code Kids is a documentary following the journey towards seeing kids being taught coding in schools once again in Canada's Maritime provinces. With the happy ending already set as a goal, will support for the movement gain the necessary steam to make this a reality? Will the amazing results seen in Estonia and Finland inspire those back home and will Canada's eastern-most provinces decide to take the lead in a global race to fill the millions of tech jobs, that at current rates, will not be filled in years to come without more kids choosing coding and tech as a career? Meet the supporters and volunteers behind this grassroots movement that's sweeping the globe and follow individual kids and how their lives have been changed by pursuing their dreams.

    Wow, this documentary is so important for educators around the globe... exposure to coding is so important!!! Actually, if you want to be a scientist coding becomes even more important... I feel like a lot more kids should have the opportunity to code... its frustrating at times, but it allows everybody to work on little projects... in their head... that is sick!

    The target audience of this documentary is teachers and educators and those who know nothing about coding. Teaching coding/programming/app & game design/web development in schools can make a huge difference to communities. It can start at home, but offering coding education in schools would offer even more opportunities. I can't imagine what my life would have been like if I had access to resources like MIT's Scratch when I was eight years old. It's about looking ahead, not backwards.

    That's not always true; I learnt programming 27 years ago, I had dyslexia (still do) by the time I was 15, I had the reading/writing age of 8 and mathematical age of 6, but I could write programs I hate to think what those levels might have been if I'd never touched programming at all, sure it hasn't brought me wealth but it did teach me to read & write and simple maths.
    You don't always HAVE to have read/write & maths skills, those skills can come from programming.
    Programming is like an art form.

    Programming isn't just about writing code, its mostly about problem solving, when you have a solution to a problem you turn than solution into code.

    Anyone wanting to get into programming, I suggest taking a look into Garry's Mod.
    The game is so easy to code things for in Lua and as you are able to see your work straight away and upload it to the workshop for others to download and enjoy, it's really motivating! (CodeBlue tutorials on UA-cam is a good place to start).
    I am now moving onto C++ and so far it has been fairly easy to pickup thanks to the Lua I learned for making addons for Garry's Mod!

    I'm 13 and I genuinely think there's a HUGE issue with education on programming. At school here in the UK, we're learning to write a letter to Alan Sugar. Yes, you heard that right, A FUCKING LETTER IN MSWORD!!! While I'm at home writing algorithms in Python and C. The teachers can't understand the code. That's the problem.

      Super Nova I suck in maths and I am object oriented. I hated those mathematical tables, because I didn't see anything being created by my calculations. I am good in languages. When I started viewing programming as a tool to make my creativity take shape I fell in love with it. And though I don't have a logical problem solving gene or talent, I can build pages, systems and programs. I am far from being pro, but I am learning and have already created something that brought a tear to my eye and a penny to my wallet. Everyone can do it. Don't let them tell you otherwise. To some it is better to run with no competition and rule the mediocre society by telling it "you can't do it because of logical thinking absence". And logical problem solving will come with time when the situation will constantly demand your brain to solve the puzzle. Don't underestimate human brain. :)

    • @bookdream
      @bookdream 9 років тому +4

      RENOVATIO I agree anyone can be a programmer. But really do you think the reason why everyone isn't rich is because they're lazy. Seriously?

    • @bookdream
      @bookdream 9 років тому +7

      Super Nova Any person of average intelligence can do it. You aren't a special genius because you're a programmer, sorry.
      However, some people don't do it for a variety of reasons. They aren't interested maybe, they don't care about it, they have other things going on in their lives. But anyone can do it provided they put in the work and effort. They are physically capable. If you put a gun to someones head and forced them to go through the process of learning programming, they could do it unless of course they have a learning disability.
      It might be easier for some people than others. But pretty much anyone is physically capable of doing it.

    • @bookdream
      @bookdream 9 років тому +8

      Super Nova Kids fail classes all the time it doesn't mean they aren't capable of learning the material. Any of those people who cook meth COULD learn the chemistry and be chemists. There are reasons why they aren't but they are capable. Anyone can learn assembly anyone could get into Kernel dev.
      I hate when people in the natural sciences or tech think that "average people" are intellectually inferior and couldn't possibly comprehend what they do. It's so arrogant. There are reasons why people fail classes, there are reasons why people choose not to go into certain fields, it doesn't mean they can't do it.
      Even if they think they can't do it. I don't believe that. No level of education, no field is impossible for the average person to get into. Notice impossible. It might be harder for them, they may hate it because it doesn't interest them, or is boring, or whatever. But through the years of work and learning anyone who doesn't have a learning disability could do it.

    • @bookdream
      @bookdream 9 років тому

      Super Nova And that's my point. Like you said, anyone could do it if they tried. And, as I see it, anyone (provided they tried enough) could get good enough where they could do it faster and better than most other int he field. There are certain people that genuinely are far advanced intellectually. Newton, Einstein, Feynman, etc... But the vast majority of people aren't so gifted. And I don't think intelligence is just set. Like there's a ceiling. You can get better and more intelligent at whatever it is. You may not get to the point of one of those gifted people, but you can still advance.
      And I'm not saying anything offensive, I'm not insulting anyone. The fact is there are people who have disabilities that make it far more difficult for them to do certain things. Is it offensive to say that a quadriplegic probably won't be able to compete in marathons?
      I realize there are people with learning disabilities that are actually geniuses in certain areas. But I'm saying that for some people learning disabilities can be a huge disadvantage in certain fields. And there are different degrees of severity with different learning disabilities. My point is that a learning disability would be the only way someone really might not be able to become proficient in a certain field.

      I think I have learned more from my VC20 and C64 days than my 4 years in tech college.
      In tech college we only got basic, pascal and only in year 2 and 3 assembler (Z80 and 8086) and C.
      It was in college where for the first time I didn't have to crunch and study and fight to keep up, I hardly ever came to class and scored 80+ marks. Technology (binary and analogue electronics) just made sense to.
      But algebra never did.

    Chick on 26:33 confuses what CS is and what being creative is. IMO she postulates that CS needs to be more creative so more people can be involved while forgetting that the result of creative process is not always something you can see or touch. I think she is more of a designer/art person that's why mark up language attracted her so much and probably that's why she switched to Arts later on cuz she realized that CS is not visual art.

    Unfortunately, there's little room for mediocre programmers. There's a shortage of great NBA players too. If you're the next Kareem or Jordan, it's very easy to get into the NBA. Math and science foundations in North Americas is a complete joke. If you want technical students, you put some put math, physics, engineering, chemistry grads into elementary and middle school teaching. Rather than... communications, journalism, "education," marketing, advertising, "business."

      1,4million coders currently needed Ireland is a good spot to be a coeder at the moment with a lot of big tech companies setting up here. I'm just learning but not going to good hard get motivated
