I used to be at stage 4, 15 years ago. Then came family requirements and I needed a better paying job at the time. Now I'm back in 2023 because photography is in my blood. I am more experienced, older and I will avoid the pitfalls like, better gear will result in success. I don't need to make a ton of money ... getting out and about with my camera is the rush for any given day. A good photograph at the end of the day is a bonus. And so is finding this channel which has personal content that is tuned to my path forward and feeds my desire to create better content on a daily basis is heavenly. Your words resonate and this year I bought a camera again instead of relying on my smartphone. That you care enough to respond to every comment is mind boggling to me. I will be back on stage 4 before Christmas. Thank you ... and cheers!

As of 2023, I'd say I'm on stage 4. Im feeling very informed this year and much more confident. 2024 heading into and or achieving Stage 5 is the goal.

How you draw this curve of the journey i´m on was so spot on! Again all of your experince shines trough and this was a real eye opener. For a while I have been in "the valley" and struggeling how to get up from there and I have felt really down from time to time. I have kept working with why and what I should focus on and NOT be too hard on my self. Now I would say that i´m getting near number 4. Thanks a lot for another important and informative lesson Steve.

I am stuck in the the Valley of despair. I don't think my photos are good enough to start selling but a lot of people not just family want me to sell them prints. When I look at the photos ie:pixel peep i find minute imperfections and arre like no not yet.
I think you need to focus on being better. Look at behance.net is your work good enough to be on there?

That was solid information. The path to success is paved with many landmines. I find myself slowly emerging from level 3, perhaps at L 3.2. I welcome the challenge, However there is much trepidation. However will embrace the notion of every challenge being an opertunity. My building may only be a few stories, however I am aiming at using a better binder for the foundation. Thanks again

You were an informed optimist and then your career died? Or you were in the valley of dispair and then you stopped? It’s rare that people quit in the first stage of success. I think you mean stage 3.

I think I am getting informed to get out of the valley. It took time to understand wgat skills i need , and money is not the main block, nerworking, social soft skills, knowing how to pitch, knowing how to self promote, choosing an area to master it is all huge! it takes time and effort.

well then, informed optimist, at least you know what's coming before success. thinking you've achieved success without going through this pattern is delusional.
I started my journey a bit more than a year ago, I did it based on memories form my 20's where I used to take a lot of pictures, though at the time would have not consider it as a career, and also my dissolution to the profession that I have been involved for more than 40 years now. At this point I don't feel I am ready to say I am an informed pessimist, I have run business before so I understand the stages and I am trying to be pragmatic about the whole process however, I feel that I still have to decide what my specialization would be, I am playing with Food, Product and Landscape, kind of discarded portraits and fashion and keeping Macro as a hobby only. That being said, I am working on (1) practice, practice hoping it would help me decide what I finally feel more confortahbe with and what comes natural (2) setting goals for the business and (3) start the business mechanics (incorporation, accounting structure, legal, etc), all of it while keeping my current job, otherwise I might not be able to fund my photography pursuit. Next year is going to be an interesting one! Thank you for the advice.
