My biggest problem is what I want to specialize in. I love everything about photography. I equally love photographing weddings, headshots, products, performers, parties, and cosplay. Guess I need to concentrate on what I need to do to make a living. 😒
You guess? how many household name generalists are there? do you think you're talented enough to be in the top 1% of all those niches? you're choosing. which is bad. you choose one thing one day and choose a different thing the next. how can you become the go to shooter for that one thing when you're trying to do all.
think like this. a mechanic can fix all cars. but would you trust your ferrari with him? fuck no. you would PAY and take your ferrari to ferrari dealership. yes or yes. WHY IS THAT. because they know your ferrari better than you could ever possibly. they obsess over them. they built them. ya but, i want to save money. save money and risk your car? your reputation? hell no. spend that. it will make it so your car hold it's value.
think of your work like the ferrari mechanic. you've been a general mechanic hacking at everything. cause you can. when you become a ferrari mechanic you have to say NO to working on other cars. sorry, i only work on ferraris.
you haven't learned how to say no. this is why you "guess" you need to specialize. you think it means less work when it actually means less work for maximum money. what sounds better.. trying to be the photographer for everyone or being the specialist for those that can afford you and need your specialized, obsessive service over that one niche your client falls in.
i shoot editorial portraits and im in toronto. google that. see who comes up first. editorial portraits, toronto. who shows up right after the paid placements? me. because that's what i shoot. that's what i show. that's all i do. so when a magazine sees my site, they book me because it's not all junked up with everything I CAN shoot. it's the one thing that i obsess over and all the examples that entails.
it comes off focused, specialized and expensive.

and btw.. you don't think we all love photography as well? more than you even? i started when i was 14. that's officially 40 years. and guess what i shoot all kinds of things. but i don't confuse my audience by showing it or trying to make money from it commercially. it causes confusion.
