I am about to strip my turbo down for a rebuild if I mark the position of both the wheels like on the housing and use those markings to get the alignment with how it was before stripping will the balance be the same after removing the markings?

Is normal to have play, all the turbos have radial play, if have oil inside you dont feel the play, when you move it and oil came out you will feell the play.
Dear Richard, that is an excellent question; If care is taken to mark the positions of the turbine shaft & the compressor wheels for re-assembly, or if the wheels have not been damaged, nor are they being replaced, then the answer is no, the assembly does not need to be rebalanced.
If any of the components are damaged like the turbine, shaft or compressor wheel then yes will need a rebalance or just replace with a new cartridge. (Often a rebuild kit and ballance cost same or more than a replacement ready built cartridge)
yes you need t balance it.. marking the bolt and putting it back to place doesn t do anything unless the shaft wheel is aligned with the nut on the compressor wheel ... without balance it cuts the turbo s life in half...
Btw ,now you can order a shaft wheel that is balanced but you will still need to balanced the cw nut...and the repair kit +sw+cw is alwayd cheaper then a cartridge in a few cases not by a lot but in some cases it could cost almost half the price of the chra... if you don t have a balancing machine just buy a turbine... and sand blast (clean) the turbo s housing do not open your new chra

Im surprised that you don't use a 360 degree thrust bearing rebuild kit in this video. But i guess it doesn't matter so much since its just a stock rebuild.
Hi can anyone tell me what could be the problem with my bmw 316d es 2011, i can drive it for a bit and its fine, but when its hot, its chucking out loads of blue/white smock know loss of power but the smock can be really bad at times, then clear as quick as it started, could it be the turbo, thanks
nothing cool ..bad example . main thing you you show how to dismantle new turbocharger not old with ,with old turbocharger much more problems. and balansing need becouse mark dont give you 100% warranty.

Headgasket engine or not enough lubrication oil on your piston don't fix it just buy another car . The repair it's not cheap.
