    I love the story going from "in my opinion, the keyboard is terrible" over "actually it is my subjective perspective and it is not so bad " to "I WAS RIGHT IT IS TERRIBLE AND I CAN PROVE IT" The new Lab is a real treat for consumer decision making, because i actually thought "maybe Alex has really high standards" and now i know it is objectively justified

    I just have to comment on this. I have an LG Gram 17 - 11gen i7 model. I think it's the 2021 model. I bought it on sale from Costco for about $1300 out the door with tax. I'm a software engineer and I figured I'd give it a try and take it back if I didn't like it. I love it! The keyboard is fine. The screen is gloss and wish it was matt like the newer Grams (but it's not a deal breaker -- you just adjust the screen angle). I've been using it daily for about 12 months -- no issues. The battery routinely lasts around 6 hours of continuous use. The speakers are not very loud. The CPU is plenty fast for productivity and some light gaming (Diablo3, Valorant). And I'm gaming on the battery! It came with a 500gb high speed NVMe SSD and I added another 980gb NVMe SSD for less than $100 to the second drive slot. If this machine dies and I can't fix it.. I'll immediately go out and buy another one. And yes.. the weight is a game changer.. I pick it up with one hand while it's open like it's nothing.

    Actually that portable monitor is amazing and probably the coolest thing on that table. I have it. Crazy bright, 16inch 16:10 aspect ratio, good colours, there's practically nothing else on the market that can match it. I pair it with my MacBook Pro 16 and I have a two monitor workstation that fits in a single laptop sleeve. It's 🔥
    Edit: Just got to the end and realised that they did get to it. Since they don't know, I'll tell you, it's practically unmatched in terms of specs and the pricing is very reasonable for what it is. Most portable monitors are dim, require two cables, have weak colours and nearly all of them are smaller and have a standard aspect ratio. It's practically a unicorn. Now I take it for granted and whenever I hear any of my friends' Windows laptops I have to really try and not laugh out loud. I just don't understand how Windows laptops are so bad in this regard, surely some decent speakers can't be that hard to figure out and implement into their larger chassis. The Gram's main selling point in my opinion (I own a 2019 13" model) is that it weighs almost nothing. yes it flexes, but mine weighs 2 to 2.5 lbs, has a beautiful touch screen, fantastic trackpad, has 2 NVME slots and amazing battery life, etc. and it's so incredibly light that I was able to bring it onto Military airplanes and watch movies and stuff in C-130's, C-17's for long across the globe flights where I'm sitting in a cargo net seat. I can hold it up with two fingers while I'm squirming around in that shitty seat trying to get comfortable. I can charge it using a pretty lightweight portable battery pack. I can watch shows in bed with it on my chest and have no uncomfortable oppressive weight. I LOVE my gram. As soon as we got it out of the box I was unimpressed with the build. I understand that a big feature of the product is how thin and light it is, but it felt like a prop. There were two real deal breakers that lead us to take it back. The first is that it has zero ability to game. We picked up Valheim the same day we got this and my 11 year old desktop wiped the floor with the Gram. With no discreet GPU my expectations were low, but it really was awful. The second thing we disliked was that the Gram ran super hot. The area above the F keys on the keyboard was extremely hot under zero load.

      It's all about the peripherals and build quality. I think that a good comparison would be why people spend more money on expensive peripherals on desktops although cheap ones can do just fine and the specs don't change - It's all about the better experience.
      Similarly, there's value to buying a more expensive laptop that is thin and light, better battery life (excellent for portability), better build quality, is more repairable due to standardised parts (especially true for business laptops), has a better keyboard and trackpad, better speakers, better display, and/or a better webcam. All these features may not improve the specs, but they can improve the laptop experience more drastically than a spec bump will.
      That being said, I'd still be hesitant about spending over $2000 on a laptop, especially one like this that lacks so many features, when you can get a macbook or even a windows laptop competitior that does all of the above better at a much lower price like $899.

However, for professionals, students, and other people with the above workflows, it's absolutely worth it to spend extra money for all the above benefits. It's far more valuable to have a light, powerful laptop with great battery life and an excellent keyboard and trackpad than to have a good gpu but a very heavy laptop with poor battery life, build quality and peripherals (gaming laptops) when you're lugging it around to classes every day or travelling around often.

    I was really surprised by how expensive these things are. Macbooks aside since they have their own issues too, i wonder why people wouldn't just buy a business class laptop at this point for that price. I mean you can get an elitebook, thinkpad or latitude in a very nice form-factor for that price.

    They key with LG Gram is to always buy last year's model when they're on stupid clearance sales.
    Got myself a 2021 Gram 17, i7, 16GB, 500GB (Upgraded to 2 x 500GB) for $1150. This is with Indian taxes so US equivalent would be like $850 or so.
    For a large 17 inch 16:10 color accurate display, it's freaking amazing pricing. This 17 inch laptop only weighs 1.3kg. You really can't beat that.

    • @chetan_naik
      @chetan_naik 2 роки тому

      LG gram 2021 and Gram 2022 are selling at almost same price. Gram 2022 always have about 30-35 discount, even introductory price also had about 30% discount. The price difference between 2021 and 2022 is less than 100$ on amazon India. I bought 2021 model because I read reviews that 2022 model runs really hot. The price difference wasn't an issue for me. Weight, display, heat and noise mgmt and battery capacity(though battery is degrading fast) are good everything else is less than satisfactory.

    • @youtindia
      @youtindia 2 роки тому

      @@chetan_naik Fair enough. I bought my 2021 gram when 2022 hadn't launched yet. About heat, there's some black tape thing inside blocking the direct airflow for some reason. I removed that and the heat is down significantly.
      It's a bit of a mod, but it got my temps down significantly and I quite like the size, weight and performance of this thing. It's a great laptop for Linux.
      The selling point for me personally was 17 inch screen on a 1.3kg weight. I have separate SSDs for Linux and Windows. I'm fairly happy with what I have personally. I switched from M1 Macbook Pro where 8GB RAM wasn't cutting it for me.

They're just so solid for the money, and even if Dell chat is annoying, I can still have the laptop under warranty with next-day support for like 5 years. And before you go, "OMG fix it yourself" maybe look up the cost of parts and realize that at $100-120 a year for the warranty, I could barely replace anything for parts alone at that price, let alone something like the display or the main board shitting itself.

      @@thomgizziz I liked a lot my Samsung Note II but eventually it died. I bought the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet back in 2014, but then the display started failing. I bought a Samsung Smart TV four years ago: none of the smart features work these days because they don't update apps anymore (had to install a Roku). I have a Gear S3 watch that can't connect to my Android phone because the Galaxy Gear app sucks. My dad's S7 tablet is barely usable because it became sooo slow.
