      I used to learn spanish as a german speaker (german is my native language) but then i switched to 'as an english speaker' because a lot of the words were in 'old' german. For example they kept saying fotoapparat (which means camera) but nowadays nobody uses that word, instead you use kamera in german

    • @Yes-Bean
      @Yes-Bean Рік тому +19

      And also they kept using the simple past form in german even though it's also not used that often anymore.
      For example instead of saying 'ich lief' (I walked) you would nowadays say 'ich bin gelaufen' (I 'am' 'gewalked').
      Yes I know german is weird😂

But it's ok those who wants to practice this way it's nice for them. But I want to learn a different traditional way. But it's ok if you don't have time to open books you can learn by fun through apps.

      I think everyone saying it stays too basic or whatever just stopped quite soon. If you actually continue the course it gets more and more advanced.
      Obviously with an app like this (and with books as well actually imo) to perfect your grasp of the language what works for me is watching videos in the language and trying to engage in conversation if possible.
      The way I see it, it's like learning to drive. Your driver's ed teaches you to drive, but continuing to drive afterwards really teaches you. As with everything, practice makes perfect.

    I'm using Duolingo to learn German. What I find causes me lose confidence in Duolingo and wonder how well the German is structured, are the English renderings of German sentences. I am a native English speaker. I get that they use American expressions like 'coffee shop' for 'cafe'. But sometimes the prepositions are not quite right and the grammar is distorted. Is this just American English or has it been written by German speakers and not checked by a native English speaker?

    Just finished it (or at least, as much as it has to teach before the practice modules). Deutsche Welle places me easily at A2 and 72% (apparently good enough!) at B1 but if I'm honest I struggled with the B1 test so I think I'm in between somewhere.
    It's interesting that even in your video near the start there are words and phrases I've never encountered. Meanwhile when I tried Babble the first thing it taught me was Vorspeise, Hauptspeise and Nachspeise, very very basic things that I realised Duolingo never even taught me (it did Nachtisch... But that's all). My grasp of German is certainly good enough to know "Speise", "Haupt-" etc so no problem but it's funny to think after almost 500 days of daily learning and getting through the whole course there would still be basic words in a restaurant I'd have to piece together.

      If you have some questions about Dutch or would like to speak to a native, I'd be happy to help!
      I'd say Dutch would be rather easy for a native German speaker, right? I mean I'm definitely not fluent in German, but I'd say generally Dutch people understand most of German seeing as how related the languages are.
      Also, I'm currently learning Norwegian and I must say, it really helps knowing (some) German because a lot of words are very similar or the same as either the Dutch, German or English versions of the word :)

      Pro trip for English speakers. With the diphthongs “ie” and “ei” you only pronounce the last letter and say it as you would in English. So “ei” is pronounced like the letter “I” and “ie” is pronounced like the letter “E”. Viel Glück!

    Duolingo is not bad but its not good. They are very shy on important topics that will be used throughout daily life and that makes it a bad choice for ppl wanting to learn fluent languages. Most duolingo learners are often behind in spelling and writing in general due to the lack of lessons covering writing

    • @Banunah
      @Banunah 2 роки тому +16

      Hi Cindy! I’m also learning German through Duolingo and to answer your question- yes! They both mean the same thing. “Eine” is referring to feminine words while “Ein” is referring to masculine. It does get a little tricky to try and remember which nouns are fem/ masc or also neutral but just thought that this might help!

      @ThePancakeSimp  Рік тому +6

    Hmm, for "show" I guess post people would use "Aufführung" instead of "Schau", as the latter is a bit ambiguous on it's own. Sure it's a perfectly correct word for it, but I don't thing anyone would use it without direct context or packing it into a compound noun.
