putting that mustard on , my fav part!
I love the design! especially the 'pergola' look at the top, and the contrasting wood you used for it.
A great project Colin. Buying sets of the solar lights when they are on sale is a great way to acquire the inner workings you need and makes them very affordable most of the time. Thanks for the project idea.
Derek
Thanks Derek, a very thoughtful posting and something I had not really considered ... thanks for posting this, I appreciate it
Colin
I love these little lanterns!
Very cool lantern project hope to see more projects like this, thank you.
Thanks so much Colin. There is no electricity in the South African bushveld where we are so this is an ideal project!
Thanks for the note Judy, yes I'll bet you can get lots of us out of solar lights in a place like that ... would love to see some pics of a finished lantern when you get it done ...
Colin
Wonderful. Beautiful Lantern
Loved this project. Think Imwill have to make some of these.
Hi Colin, I enjoyed this lantern project very much. Good close-ups and clear instruction. Thank you.
Thank you Julia, I liked it too and I think there are a number of variations that could be done. I am looking forward to see what others do with the idea.
Excellent design. Turned out wonderful. Thank you.
Thanks Darren, I think I borrowed some ideas from others, but yeah the design seems to work well, it actually looks better in person too.
what a neat project... something new to try.
un'idea bellissima, complimenti!!
Wonderful design Colin, I think it look great.
Thanks for your comments, always good to hear from you
I'm
Pretty cool! I like it!
Brilliant as usual Colin...thanks

Thanks Steve for taking the time
Colin
Wonderful design Colin, I love the overhanging rails at the top. Can you tell me how you squared of the tips of the corner pieces on your table saw?
this what I have been looking for for my deck, Great job
That's exactly what I was thinking when I was making this ... a great deck or gazebo lighting detail
Really enjoyed watching that video, Great stuff as usual thanks!

Great job Colin but I wish you had plans for this!!
Giday Colin, you are presentation plus... Thoroughly enjoyed this video as I do all your videos....this could be the project that gives me the perfect excuse to buy a scroll saw :-)
Colin keep up the excellent work

Great idea...
Mario Martinez Thanks Mario, yes, overall I was pleased with the project
Nice job
Thank Fabrizio, appreciate you taking the time to comment
I made one for candle. I like your design. Congrats
I guess we are thinking somewhat alike, as I was working on creating this build, I was planning on using a candle, it was as I was drawing the plan that I thought about the solar light ... would love to see your version if you want to post it on woodworkweb to share :-)
Thanks again Colin
WoodWorkWeb Hi, thanks for replying. Actually I don't have a video on my youtube channel, because it was very beginning, but I have pictures on my facebook page. I hope you enjoy the design. Cheers

are you using pined blades with adapters?
Beautiful Lantern! Hope your finger is OK?
Nice design Colin I really like it, but it will be interesting to see what design mods you come up with.
Yes ... it was definitely a learning experience for me too. I agree, the design looks nice, but I think the build needs some tweaks yet.
Hi Colin, I love the project, but was a little frustrated with a few missing details, such as the top plate and the type of solar light. I will definitely be trying this.
John
Hi John, hmmm ... I was frustrated with the top too. I video'd most of it but you can't really see what I am doing. This was a learning project for me, I think I might re-do this later on. This is a perfect project where when you make the first one you really learn things and the subsequent ones will be much improved. Thanks for commenting buddy, love to hear from you.
Colin
You should use Mylar instead of cookie sheet. It will hold up WAY better in something like high winds or accidents.
I realize this is a 2014 project, I like it, however the big problem I see is rain and snow destroying the panel holding the solar unit. There should be a method to seal the top to prevent or correct that aspect of the build. Perhaps a panel with an opening for the solar cells on the top that is sealed to the top of the solar unit to prevent weather getting underneath.
Have you looked into a battery powered led type light fixture? I think it would give you a boost in light output.
MrCuervo22779 I have a little bit but have not found what I need so far, but I think you are correct ... and LED system would be better ... let me know if you have a lead on something, I would be interested :)
could u have used a dremel tool instead of using a Forstner bit and scroll saw to cut the first thing out?
What about the dimensions Colin if we could get those we can go farther, Thanks
Why doesn't scroll saw jump around when I use it?
Nice, sort of Mission/ Japanese style. Could make the build easier if you gang cut and shape the pieces which are the same.
Yes, good idea, I always like to try and gang cut for consistency and saving time. Great comment, thanks for contributing.
Colin
I have that same scroll saw. Pain to change blades is'nt it? Have lost my holder and can't find replacement.
Yes, it is a pain to change blades and to cut holes, you have to start off with such big hole to put the blade holder through. I have looked around for something better, but I use it so seldom it's hard to justify another one ... oh well, one day :)
I love this pröject. I can envision so many ways to alter it for other uses.
But one thing bugs me, you keep saying 'Prōject' rather than 'Pröject'.
David Blalock English does not use those characters so not sure what you mean but English is so widely used that people will have their own way of saying things. Just look up geordie english...
I think it should have the bottom capped off to prevent bugs from making a nest up there.
Hmmm, good idea Adam. Around here that is a problem so great comment, Thanks!!
Colin
WoodWorkWeb Maybe just a screen insert, so the light still gets through the bottom as well as any moisture.
a solar lamp with rice paper shade... can it accumulate enough power if you keep it indoors?
Tavanski Čelovjek probably not, I have not been able to get mine to work very well by bringing it indoors, seems it needs sunlight, or at least long cloudy days to recharge the batteries
I like the lantern and I thought theater lighting gel would be a bit more weather proof to replace the rice paper. Maybe a light amber color. I will have to dust off my scroll saw. Thank you for the " bright " idea.
Great ideas ... thanks for suggesting them, others will learn from them too :)
I always like more bright ideas from subscribers ;)
Sharpieee, let you mark
That's right :) .... thanks for your comments
Hello Thank you for sharing
can you give pattern or dimension plaise .
I think you could use sanded plexiglass to avoid the tearing paper. Maybe even sand designs into it. Just a thought.
gremlinsbreath That's a good thought, and I actually tried a few different types of plastic but they all blocked too much light ... I was amazed that I could not find a material that passed light better than paper, but I am sure there must be thin plastic somewhere that would work, just not one I could find :-)
Do you think something like this might work?

gremlinsbreath wow, had not seen that, it sure would be worth a try
This solar lamp or flashlight is spectacular

no contaba con tu astucia.Gracias amigo
how contruyo collapsible dog at home
please upload the design draw
Sorry, I don't actually have plans for this beyond what I explained in the video. Maybe we can find someone who could do this, I just don't have that talent, but thanks for asking Mohamed.
Colin
thanks
Pass the mustard please...eeeewww its glue
Wonderful design Colin, I love the overhanging rails at the top. Can you tell me how you squared of the tips of the corner pieces on your table saw?
I worked out the angle then set my mitre gauge at that angle and cut them off, then I saw that that was wrong because there is actually a double angle so in the end I had to use my hand belt sander to take the high points off, which was not an ideal way of doing it ... I learned a lot doing this project and might do another later on.
