- I was watching a video that Steve-O posted where he was talking about his time spent as a clown. He said it was statistically harder to get into clown college than Harvard. Obviously “statistically” and “practically” are different but that still was kind of surprising.
So naturally I fell down a clown college rabbit hole and this is where I ended up. I’ve got 9 days to become a clown. Let’s get it.

I think trying to get the dog to run between your legs and him actively avoiding it is a pretty good clown act
I agree. If only he’d dramatized the frown and pur his hands on his hips as he glared down at the dog. Would’ve made the accident an “intentional” act 😂
I was thinking the same thing! The one time I went to a circus, the clown act involved a guy trying to get a cat to stay in place while the cat just refused to cooperate.

I'm actually very grateful to clowns. They'd play with me, do goofy stuff, and managed to make me smile and giggle even though I was so weak.

I always loved getting picked as a volunteer for shows. I’ve never seen a clown so I don’t know what exactly their volunteers have to do but I’ve been the volunteer for street magicians before.
I actually used to be a stage and birthday clown as a kid, and then I was the chickfila cow for a while, I've always been like awkward and embarrassed to try to entertain people but when you get into character as a clown or mascot its a lot easier

I once had a conversation with a clown on an anonymous chat with strangers website. Apparently they did clowning for charities. It wasn't his full-time job, but a hobby. He enjoyed being able to help others find a bit of joy (and whatever else he was raising money for) in making a fool of himself. His username was "fat clown" and I was initially turned off by that until I realized that it was from a genuinely kind-hearted guy and not just an insecure guy seeking validation(?) haha. We even ended up talking about an intense, deep issue in the world because of talking about charities. That website was mostly trash so I don't go on it anymore but I still remember that quality conversation that opened my eyes about clowns.

Every clown they talked to looked like they wanted to be in the video but never practiced their lines or routines and they did everything in one take
I was in the video. It was shot between the hours of 10 pm and 2 am during our Clown College session in 1986. There was no script. There was no pay. There was only one take. BTW - the Ringling Clown College was training Circus clowns... the makeup we learned there had to play to audiences 5 balconies up. NONE of our makeups were intended for close-ups with cameras; seasoned pros learned to adjust their makeup if they knew there was going to be a shoot, but us newbies in CC had worked for 7 weeks learning to put on a makeup that amplified our genuine emotions (yup - smiles AND frowns) so the makeups we sported in that video were pretty grotesque. Not bad - for their intended purpose - but not for up close viewing.

Some other things worth mentioning in this feed: Mr. Noodle is a character played by Bill Irwin who is alive and well.... and a graduate of the Ringling Clown College which is being lampooned here.
Many of those "hospital clowns" being mentioned in this thread are former Ringling clowns, and graduates of the Clown College. They've adjusted their makeups from the Big Circus Arena makeup typified in the video with the more "human" look using less makeup for their current "up close" clowning.
Also, the "blackface clown" being mocked here had one of the cleanest, best makeups ever to come out of CC. The dude had a darker complexion, so it's natural that he had a darker base makeup. What I think is odd about the poster's take on that makeup is that nobody EVER accused Ted of having a "blackface makeup." That guy was an artist, and he painstakingly developed a VERY neat and tidy look for a character who might just be pushing a shopping cart around the arena. If you were to see his makeup straight on (and you get a brief chance to do so in the video) you'll notice that his face is mostly covered with white make-up. So, I accuse Scott of sensationalism here. Foul.
LOL Neat and tidy? The ceasing on the neck proves otherwise! No disrespect to your old homie but that make up was BAD.
Smeared, creased, AND patchy, not blended into his obviously FAIR skinned neck. You can see his real skin tone under whats rubbed off or wasn't applied well and he was MINIMUM of 3-4 shades lighter than that base colour he used.
You know, never found clowns to be that eerie or scary, except the ones that were explicitly supposed to be, like Sweet Tooth or IT or something like that. Spent years pretending I was, because everyone else was scared of them, and god knows I was already a weirdo, don't wanna stand out more. Now, a good decade and change later, I gotta wonder... was anyone else just pretending to be afraid of clowns because everyone else was?
